I think the OP's point is very valid, but his concern probably comes from some lack of knowledge about how online works in games where you can have private rooms. My online experience is based (besides GT5P) in two other racing games: TRD3 (PS2 game) and Ferrari Challenge (PS3 game). And in both these games you don't have events to enter, you just "Create" them, by opening a lobby and choosing the cars, the tracks, the race settings.
And then you can choose if you want that lobby to be "private" or "public". In TRD3, if you wanted a lobby to be private you would set a "password" to enter. Only your friends know it, so other people can view the lobby's existence, but without the password they can't enter it.
In Ferrari challenge we don't have a "password" feature, but we can reserve all slots. Then, only thepeople you invite can enter the lobby. I did that last night, created a lobby with all slots reserved because I had a "race meeting" scheduled with a few other GTPers.
I guess TRD3 was best, because the host could "ban" people from the lobby if they didn't behave properly in the races. I hosted lobbies there very often and always kept them "public". My usual "race buddies" could always get in, as could other players. If they were good, clean racers, they would soon become friends anyway. If they were punters or cheaters, I simply banned them from the lobby and that meant they could never get in again.
So, this is not a question of "pivate vs public", it's a question of allowing "user created" lobbies/events. I'm all for it.
