Hey guys my P.S.3 it's almost dead.It switches on but after that in a few min it hangs and I can't do anything. So I'm planning on buying a new one .I thought of getting the 12 GB version is it worth it? Cause ill be needing this P.S.3 for games like crisis3 and gta 5.And also will I be able to put my old hard disk from the fat P.S.3 into the slim one?

Does it turn itself off?

I personally wouldn't recommend the 12GB, that'll be more like 9-10GB in real life because of the way a gigabyte is sold; in marketing a gigabyte is 1000MB but in actual computing terms it's 1024MB, so you have fewer real GB than marketing GB. I don't think the price difference is big enough to warrant having such a small capacity, and I reckon GTA V will have a pretty large mandatory install so you might struggle to keep two games installed at the same time. The bigger one, though, I would say is worth it. Then again the PS4 is out at the end of the year so if you can hold on that long it's probably wiser to keep hold of your money until then.

You won't be able to swap the hard disks over, each PS3's hard disk is formatted so it will only ever be readable by the PS3 it came from. Either get your PS3 fixed or give up all hope of salvaging your saves.

You can put your old hard drive in, but you will need to purchase a HDD caddy to mount it in. If you have data that you want to save on your old ps3, I suggest you back that up while you can. Once you fit in the old HDD in your new Ps3, it will format it, losing all your data.

I have a 12gb with my old 250gb HDD fitted, and I'm happy with it.

You can swap them, it will just wipe all your data. But it will work.

^ I assumed he meant to read the data on the old drive, but if not then yeah, you can put the old drive in the new PS3 and erase it. Depending on the age of the hard drive (and whether or not it's the cause of the problem, which it could be) it may not be a good idea though.

Don't get the 12gb unless you want to go through the trouble of mounting an HDD bracket, etc. Also what neema_t said.
I recommend the 250gb, at least. Plenty of space. Do what I do and transfer data via USB so your save games are safe. 👍

In a nutshell, your old HDD will work but you need a caddy.

It will wipe all data, when doing so.

12gb wont last 5 minutes before it's full.

If you have anything less than a 60gb in your old one, I would upgrade.

Whether it is cheaper to buy a 250gb super slim outright, or buy the 12gb super slim, the caddy and a 250gb separately is down to what deals you can get.

BACK UP YOUR SAVE GAME DATA WHILE YOU CAN ON A USB!

The thing is ill be needing a P.S.3 to play gta 5 since it's not on the Ps4 also I won't but the Ps4 as soon as it comes out ill buy it a bit later so you guys suggest the 250GB?

250GB is a good amount of space, which you will struggle to use up under normal circumstances. I have a 250gb in my super slim, but I bought it as a 12gb, because I had a 250gb in my old Ps3. I bought the caddy swapped it over, this took no more than 5 minutes.

PS4 will work with PS3 games.

The full details of how, why, and for how much hasn't been released yet, so I would hold fire on that thinking at the moment.

250 should be enough. Actually you only get about 218-220 with the way memory is marketed as neema_t said.

Also, remember that you can upgrade/use any 2.5 inch HDD 👍

PS4 will work with PS3 games.

Not necessarily very well, though, if it streams PS3 games the quality and latency will vary depending on your Internet connection.

I'd go with the 250GB any day, unless your dying PS3 is only a couple of years old. If its more than that I'd prefer the fresh hard drive to re-using a tired one.

Thanks guys one more question what is this caddy? And I doubt if it's gonna be available here.

It's the small tray you put the hard drive in to hold it in place inside the PS3. All other PS3s came with one as standard (as they also came with hard drives, I guess) but I don't think the previous ones will work with the new PS3, at least I assume they won't.

Edit: It looks like this:

Which is different to the Fat and Slim PS3s'.

I linked here. The caddy from an older ps3 will not fit in the super slim. I would only go the cardboard route for a short term solution, if at all.
