Hi guys,

So GAME have got an offer on at the moment where you can trade in your normal PS4 for a PS4 Pro for £145.

I've got a 1080p 49" Sony TV, and don't plan on upgrading that at all for at least the next few years (probably when the PS5 comes out with a decent sim and hardware confirmation).

Has anyone used a 1080p TV on a base PS4 and PS4 Pro with Project Cars 2? Is there a noticeable improvement in image quality and framerate? One of the main things that would swing it for me is if the Pro is able to reduce or remove the nasty aliasing in the landscape and skyline that I currently experience. The reduced resolution doesn't bother me enough to buy a 4K TV though.

Finally, any improvements that you have noticed (even outside PC2), do you reckon it's worth the £145?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

The game looks and performs better on PS4 Pro. I run it in resolution mode which renders the game up to 1440p before being downsampled to 1080p on my TV. To be honest though the main thing for PC2 is the more consistent framerate and the Pro's ability to run single player races with 32 players without a hitch.

I would not buy a Pro just for PC2 though.

I also played PC2 on both. Pro is noticeably better overall.

Thanks for your input guys. Yeah, it wouldn't just be for PC2 there's other quality of life improvements like a quieter chassis and better VR performance as well.

@rj5992

I have a 1080 monitor and I run in enhanced graphics mode for my solo stuff. It does add some nice graphical features and pretty some things up.
For a little bit of extra smoothness online I tend to use enhanced resolution mode with the Pro's supersampling option switched on. That I think helps with the aliasing.

The pro also has a boost mode that can speed up most games that don't have a specific pro enhancement. Pcars 1 benefited from this considerably. Assetto Corsa too.

But of course it's not all Pcars, a lot of games now often have extra Pro features. Oh and there's probably faster load times all round.

Is it worth the £145 to "upgrade" when there might be a new console coming out in a couple of years? Not sure. I know you do get a lot of use out of your current PS4 so it's not like it would be sitting around idle. ;)
(And you'd get another years warranty)

a quieter chassis
Hmm, not necessarily. The Pro's fan spins up to quite a speed and isn't that quite. It's not like it's deafening though.

That's the million dollar question! Well...£145 question. I'll have to have a think on that!

Ah, well I'm using the launch edition PS4 and it really is defeaning. To the point where I have a big tower fan and the PS4 drowns that out sometimes when it's doing something taxing.

I suppose that one way of looking at it is a PC user upgrading could spend £145 (or more) on just a graphics card!

But to counter that, the PS5 is, seemingly, going to be fully backwards compatible with PS4 games so PC2 will hopefully wizz along very happily on that. Of course PC3 might be on the horizon by then.

Decisions decisions. :)

(Looking at their prices it seems they'd be giving you £184 for your old console (compared to the price of their new ones) which isn't bad. It's similar to what they sell their pre-owned standard ones for, £189, should you need one.)

Yeah, I've decided to go for it. One of the other factors that swayed me was that, when the PS5 does eventually come out, a 1 or 2 year old PS4 Pro with the latest chassis will have a far higher resale value than my current 5 year old (6 or 7 by then) launch edition base model. So not only am I getting a good price for my current console now, I'm also getting a better resale value in a year or two's time.

I found the graphics to be better on a 4K tv, on the normal ps4. But when I tried my brothers ps4 pro on my 4K tv, the tv got all sketchy and kept trying to change the screen every 4 seconds, so I gave up on that.

Yeah, I've decided to go for it.
Oh, right. 👍 Good points also.
You may not feel the need to get a PS5 straight away anyway.

How does the swap work? Do you have to take yours in? Because to save loosing data and time reloading the new one you can transfer info from one console to another if they are connected. You might want to start afresh though.

Yeah, I won't be getting one straight away. After having a mate struggle with the first fat PS3 when it released and having to deal with the same problem with my second hand console years later I'll always give it 6/12 months before considering.

Yeah, I have to take my one in. Fortunately I have put a 2TB hard drive in mine so I was able to pull that out and put the original 500gb drive in that I'd been using as an external hard drive in the meantime. I put the PS software on the 500gb drive this morning. So when I get the Pro it'll be a case of swapping the drives and putting my 2tb one in, and downloading my save files from the PS+ storage. Guess I'll be upgrading to a 1TB external hard drive as well!

That's surprising, my standard ps4 is quiet as a button. I've had it since maybe 4 years, can't remember the model number though.

I'd pull the trigger on it.

I played on regular PS4 when it released, wasn't terrible.
My son now plays it on the pro, noticeable difference.

I'm now on PC in supersampling heaven this sim is so beautiful, having played it on everything consoles just don't do it justice.

The Xbox One X I'll mention looked better than the pro.

You mention improved VR performance. I disconnected my PS VR from PS4 Pro because it stopped it outputting HDR. Not sure if there is a workaround.

Yeah, I had heard about that. I think they fixed it for the V2 version of PSVR iirc. Regardless, it's fortunately not an issue for me as I'll be using it on a non-HDR 1080p TV.

Thanks for all your help and input guys, just wanted to let you know that I did go for it and got it all setup over the weekend. There's a definite noticeable improvement when in Enhanced Visuals mode, especially in wet weather... The game looks even more gorgeous.

Another bonus I hadn't realised was that the Pro has the ability to screen capture in 1080p as opposed to the standard PS4's 720p. I'm no 'YouTuber' but have made the odd video and there is a huge improvement in quality.

Thanks again for your help and happy racing!

Glad you think it was worth it @rj5992. Trouble is you'll be faster now. Possibly.

Remember to switch on boost mode in the visual output options. I've never had it cause a problem with any games. And also the super sampling mode can be effective in some games on a HD screen.

Yeah as I said it sure does pretty things up with a few extra features. Check out the mirrors for instance, things don't suddenly disappear anymore, they fade away.

PSVR for Pcars 2 on PS4 is a thing? Didn’t know that? Can you race in VR?

The processor unit with the V1 PSVR does not pass through HDR so you have to unplug it when you want to view HDR content. The processor unit that ships with all V2 PSVR setups does not have this limitation.
