PS4 Pro performance issues

Forgive me is there is another perfectly relevant thread for this but I need to rant/cry for help in some ways šŸ˜‚

I brought a ps4 pro specifically for gt7. I didn’t see the point in going to next gen purely for one game as I thought the pro would be a decent middle ground between the 3 consoles the games available on. I’ve played the game on a new base ps4 and although the load times aren’t (when the pros working properly) as fast atleast it doesn’t stop every 5 minutes to think about it.

So the game freezes on basically every load screen/race/menu change etc. For example to do one go at le sarthe 30 mins would take me nearly an hour with loading the track, freezes on track in the pits you name it. I do around 4 min laps but in real time it’s nearly 6.

Initially I put it down to the game having so many bugs it was just the game, but still to this day it’s having performance issues. Annoyingly it’s only on gt7 as I’ve had a few free games off of plus to test if it was the console.

I really really enjoy playing but it’s so hard getting into the game any further than I already have. I’ve got around 200 cars, online ratings are DR B and sport A. I’m not the fastest by any means but really enjoy sport as that’s the only thing I can get to load most of the time šŸ™ˆ

I don’t know what I’m expecting as the response is probably but a ps5 to run well but I thought I’d try!

Here’s a photo of my civic touring in the game to copy my real life track car āœŒšŸ¼

For what it's worth, I've experienced none of this running on my PS4 Pro.

Only hitches I get is when a ghost loads in when crossing the line. Maybe worth cleaning out the console or something? I've no real advice for how to fix it (unfortunately) other than to say the advice certainly isn't to buy a PS5, as I think a lot of these issues are isolated to something going on with your console rather than the game.

Strange. I started on my Pro as I didn't have a 5 yet and was really impressed by how the game ran. Load times felt pretty good, but I also have a pretty slick SSD installed with plenty of space. Is your hard drive getting full, do you have an SSD? These things can make a pretty significant difference, although probably not enough to completely explain your issues.

EDIT: A dirty Pro combined with a full and/or slow HDD could have a hard time. Clean it at the least, use compressed air, do NOT blow on the fan directly.

I know my answer will not help you but I had ps4 pro and GT7 was running without any problems whatsoever. (I got ps5 and then sold my ps4 pro)

So I did actually take it back last week as it had an issue where it kept turning itself off after a few minutes (not while on games) they cleaned it and reset everything and it’s been fine.

But turns out it’s had the storage doubled as I only brought it as a 1tb console and I’ve got 2tb free. Would that be an issue? I know with my Xbox one I’ve got a 2tb external hd and that tan so much better.

I’ve been having the issues since gt was the only game installed on it and doesn’t seem to have gotten worse with more games on it.

Strange as I’ve said it took nearly an hour to do le sarthe and it’s ran absolutely fine afterwards! šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø Would busy internet have anything to do with it do you think?

Very strange. You’re clean, plenty of space on your HDD. Network speed could certainly impact load times, but with what you describe, I doubt that’s your problem. You can always try reinstalling the game.

So can I use the compressed air on the side vents?

That’s the only thing I could think it is unless as I’ve read on other threads about gt sport from a while back some hd’s actually run worse than the standard one fitted? I’ve only had the game reinstalled since the weekend as the ps was wiped when I took it back to the store. It’s such an annoying issue as when it works it’s great, I just can’t get into it when you’ve gotta wait so long šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™‚šŸ˜šŸ˜‚

Wasn't the console just "simply" cleaned, or were the thermal pads and the paste also renewed? I assume the PS4 is a bit older right?

In any case, my PS4 needed the full program when I bought it used.
It is not just the storage space on the HDD that is important, but also the type of HDD/SSD. Please make sure that a good + fast product has been installed. There are some specimens that are quite slow, especially with cheap, large models of HDDs. Furthermore, there are occasional crashes or freezing before a race.. well, "state of the art".

Yeah the guy said he had blown it out I presume like stated above just to get rid of any dust inside, yep it’s a used one but the best condition out of the ones available from them which I paid more for.

I think more and more I’m leaning towards the idea of it having a crap 2tb HDD. Are there any to look for in particular? I’ve not actually had a look myself so I can comment on what make etc it is

I used to have a customer who wanted to save money and cleaned his PCs (it was a small office) himself. He used a standard compressor to blow out the PCs... unfortunately without a water separator. That took revenge at some point... I hope you don't have a similar problem with your PS4.
If you want to install a few other games, even a 500GB SSD would be enough... although a 1 TB is more of the standard... but make sure that you can't just swap out the HDD, you need a lot of preparatory work for that. You can also find plenty of instructions online. I keep my fingers crossed that a faster HDD/SSD can solve your problems.

Would I be right in thinking if I got a external hd and had gt installed on that instead of the console it would ā€œin theoryā€ run better because it’s not on the unknown HDD in the ps? šŸ¤”

I’ve got everything crossed it wants to run well when I get home tonight so I can enjoy the update šŸ˜‚

I'm sorry, I know the PS not well enough to be able to say whether something like that is possible... and since the USB ports on the PS4 and I know only support USB 2.0... that won't be faster than any internal HDD . Try the update first, maybe your system will run better than before with this new update, if not buy an SSD and reinstall the system on it.

The pro and base PS4 have USB 3.0, but they are indeed slower than the internal HDD interface (SATA II)

You can try upgrading the internal HDD, but I highly doubt that is your problem. If the case has been cracked and the previous owner has done so, there is a very good chance that PS4 has had prior heating issues. Why else would someone crack the case? Once the heating issue crops up, it never really goes away. New thermal paste can help, but this fix done incorrectly can brick the console at worst and is no guarantee of a fix. IIRC, there was a way to run a fan test, maybe the best place to start. Laptop cooling pads can help in a pinch though.

I only have a regular PS4 but also had a lot of issues with the game freezing / hanging on loading in particular. And I had upgraded my HDD to 2TB (the issue probably being that it is a SHDD, a kind of hybrid). I got the tip to connect an external USB drive, move the game over to that one and play it from there. I so did, and haven't had a single problem since. So if you have a spare external USB3 HDD lying around, try that.

I'm also on PS4 Pro, no major issues or performance problems whatsoever, acceptable load times (mind you I have a 500GB AData SU750 SSD instead of the factory HDD), only "issue" that i can see it that sometimes, lets say every couple of days, it just doesn't want to enter some race event, the little circle is spinning, but nothing, i have to go back to PS home page, force close GT7 and open it again, and it's working normally.
