Qualifying - Do you want it back in GT6?

A feature omitted since GT4, qualifying plays an essential role in real-life motorsports. Not only does it showcase what both the driver and car are capable of, it also shows who's the best. In GT5, starting in the middle or back of the pack sometimes made things a bit rough, especially with the unpredictable AI this game has. Would you like qualifying to return?

It would be ok so long as it is optional on the races like it was in GT4.

Personally I find it a waste of time in most cases as I can easily start in the back and win the race anyway without taking the extra time to post a poll position time.

It was handy in GT4 when going for A-Spec points with a inferior car and on some tracks where it was very hard to pass like Hong Kong in the championship race. I remember starting in the back on that race and by the time I got around the GT cars the Minolta had quite a lead but then again that did make it more challenging. When I ran the qualifying lap I started in front and walked away with ease.

So unless they make the A-Spec races considerably harder than they were in GT5 there really is not much point in it though could be a nice feature to add to an online lobby as an option.

Optional qualifying would be good, as HBR-Roadhog says. GT is a racing simulator, and races generally involve qualifying.

GT1 had the best qualifying format, you even got an extra point (in championship races) if you qualified on pole.

I've always been wanting it to come back in that way. :)

Definitely agree with this. Seeing as how games in this age of gaming seem to be tailored more towards the online experience rather than the offline career, I can't see why GT6 would omit such a feature for online. 👍

If my memory is correct I think you even got 1000cr for pole position. How generous. :)

I don't understand why GT5 didn't have it.

I think PD were trying to show off the new 12 car fields by making the player start in the middle of them for each race. That's the only justification I can make for it.

Qualifying should be available for every race.

It is required in this genre. Especially needed online.

People say the same thing about unlocks. Make people earn cars and they'll supposedly buy things they wouldn't consider. I don't see it as a solid rule.

If PD wants to show off large grids, why not have everyone lapping the track during a pre race session. You run into a new car every few seconds and when you come in to pit, the pits aren't empty. And of course, qualification doesn't mean the player is suddenly going to start in 1st place every race, unless they would crush the AI anyway in which case they aren't going to see any 12 car field from first place for 5 laps.

I agree with the nominations to have it as an option. I normally don't find myself really regretting not starting up front. Overtaking the field makes things more interesting than starting on pole and never seeing anyone. It also feels like a waste of time qualifying for short races. If I was participating in a race that's at least a half hour in length, maybe, but not for a seven-minute sprint.

Qualifying makes the most sense when rules dictate how tight the mechanical competition is. I don't think PP cuts it at this point.

As someone who did as little offline as possible, the lack of proper qualifying in online racing was a major shortcoming to me and something I think PD absolutely has to address in GT6. It's not difficult online either. Hosts should be able to do the following:

1. Set up an official qualifying period of a given length. Only timed laps completed before the timer runs out count.

2. At all times the top qualifiers, in order, along with their lap time should be available for display to each driver, toggled on and off if desired at the push of a button, without having to pause the game or bring up a menu.

3. Race Director should be able to set up in the qualifying parameters whether someone is allowed to go back to the garage or not once the qualifying timer runs out or perhaps have an alternate setting where drivers are allowed to return to the garage but are placed at the back of the grid, or return to the garage without penalty. The usual reverse grid, slowest first options would still be avaiable as well. A random setting might also be useful for online racing.

4. Race Director can then set an event timer of any length to automatically start the race. Be a great addition if an announcers voice called out when 5 minutes, 2 minutes and 1 minute were remaining.

The shorter the race, the more important qualifying is.

PP is far more than what's necessary for qualification to work. What do you think is wrong with it?

I personally dislike the idea of points being awarded for pole position. Qualifying is about improving your chances in the race, and the positions at the end of the race is the only important thing in racing.

I did like qualifying being there for all the races in GT1, but at the same time, the qualifying times that the player was competing against did not reflect the lap times the AI was capable of achieving, at all. Of the PS2 games I've played, i think TOCA Race Driver 3 had the best qualifying format. No need for often cumbersome out-laps like in GT4.

Qualifying should be brought back if we get a proper AI model. If it was a challenge, along the lines of F1 2012, it would be fantastic!

I don't think anything is 'wrong' with qualifying. I think it should be an option for sure.

Qualifying is near the top of my want list. I would love full race weekends in the latter championships in the game.

Think qualifying is useless if the AI is anything like GT5 , starting from pole would make races even easier, saying that it wouldn't hurt to have it as it's optional anyway.

Proper qualifying sessions for online races would go down well with me tho !

This will add so much more to many races, like the Formula series, it'd also mean they've improved the AI if they're letting you start higher up :)

Why wouldn't you include the option for qualifying in a racing game? Especially one that is attempting to be a simulation.

I should think it ought to be essential for online (& easy to implement)

Regarding offline, unfortunately I'm sure the only reason it wasn't included in GT5 is because the AI is so terrible that every human player would qualify in first.

[edit] I would also love a practice session for car setup prior to qualifying too

Qualification + AI difficulty settings = 👍
Not sure why we would want an AI difficulty setting seeing as they are already to easy.
Personally I would prefer the AI to be harder without a way to make it easier as that pushes people to drive better rather than just hit the easy button.

?? I think he means the option to make AI better, no easier..........
