Question about racing items: number plates and custom decal-based plates

I see some liveries with custom number plates made from a combination of decals. My question is: if you enter a Sport event such as the Nations Cup, does the game place its own required number plate (the 'racing item' one) over the custom one, making it look not great?

This would be my impression of what happens but I haven't been able to test this yet.
