Question for all B-Ball players!!

As a fellow B-Ball player, I woud like to know

What your best part of your game? and what do you think you bring to your team that nobody else does?

6 months ago, i would say that my running defence was awesome. running after a player who got a loose ball and somehow managing to stop him from having an easy shot. But now, i would say my lay-ups are the best part of my game. I'm not tall enough to dunk (often, it has to be a eprfect run to the hoop for that to happen), so i worked on my lay-ups big time and that practice has payed off. 4 years ago, i was lucky to score 8 points in a game. now i average 12 per game, with a highest score of 22.

what i bring to the team? hhmm.... dont know. very high enthusiasm i guess. and also being the only player who has to lay down at the end of the game cause i pushed it over the limit  playing outside in the australian summer heat are not the best b-ball conditions in the world

I've never played organized basketball, but I know that layups are essential part of the game. Many of my friends practiced dunking, but for most of them, it's useless in real game situations. I practiced layups(right and left handed), also running jumpers and tear drops. Practicing more useful things like, blocking out, setting picks, jump shooting, etc. those things will make you an better player.

I'm glad you are hustling defender, all coaches loves that. Enthusiasm, as you've mentioned are important also. I hate it when I have a guy on the team, who doesn't care about winning. If you are averaging 12 points per game, you must be an awesome player!

P.S. I'll take an Australian heat over winter in Oregon(U.S.A.). I was going to shoot around little bit today... too cold!

I've played organized basketball for many years now, and I specialize at the 3 pointer. It's rare for me to not make two or three 3 pointers in a game. The last high school game I had, about a week ago, I had four 3 pointers in the first half, and finished with 20 or so. So far this season I've gone over 20 3 times now, and average about 18.

nice work!!! i also had my last ever school game not so long ago. most of the yr12's play in the open B's except for me and another guy, grant. anyways, since this was our alst ever game, us two moved down to the b's to play with the others. it was an awesome, intense, low scoring game. in the end, we lost by 2 points, 22-20. i managed to score 14 points that game with an ankle injury so i was pretty happy. even though we lost, we celebrated like winners, as it was our last ever game and most of us had been playing as a team for 5 years. by far the most enjoyable game ive ever played, even though we didnt win.

I haven't played organized basketball since high school (I'm 21 now) but the strongest part of my game was always running the floor, fast breaks, etc. I love a fast-paced game. I basically idolized Kirk Hinrich because he played exactly the way I love to play (I'm a big Kansas fan ;) )

Well Im a small guy only 5' 10" but I block out realy well, good D most of the time.
I also have a passing game which lots of players seem to be missing these days.
And I can shoot so I dont know what one thing I can bring to a team a little of every thing I guess. Im like a Doug Christy with the kings type of player. just not thta tall.

I'm 6 foot 1, I'm a shooter for my AAA team, I average 22 pts/gm, once I shot 8 out of 12 from the Arc, I fnished with 32 pts but we lost.

I specialize in shooting but I can also dunk, that's the best kept secret of the league:P It's a dagger, a shooter that can dunk, that surprizes every coach I play agaisnt!

im in grade 9 and started playing bball end of grade 7 our games are really short time wise and low scoring like 30-40 points and 32 mins long and thats not even the gay part in the first 3 quarters we have to put 2 completly different lineups on every 4 mins. so thats why the numbers are'nt incredible. im not the strongest offensive player scoring wise i averaged 4 points a game but you'll never guess the assists i avereged 7.5 a game and i play pf and shooting guard. I play power forward cuz we only have 2 other tall kids i also averaged 6 rebounds only like .5 or so offenseive (mabey our team doesnt miss) no jk our team stunk we had like 4 real players me and my 2 best friends and then this foriegn kid

I'm in my 2ns year with my team, and ive now moved up to starting point guard. My defence has always been strong but my offensive numbers have virtually doubled. My rookie season i averaged 7ppg, 2 rebs, and 4 ass. Now I averaged 15 ppg, 3 rebs and 7 assists. We are now in the post season lol.

Good thread, I'm keeping it alive. ;)

Well, I finished my last year of high school basketball back in May, we came up one point short of missing Provincials. Anyway, I would say the best part of my game is running the fast break. I love grabbing defensive rebounds, taking off the other way, and getting easy points for my teammates. I also consider myself a leader on and off the court to my teammates, those are probably the two best things I bring to a team, but I'd like to consider myself a good all around player. :dopey: On a little bit of an off-topic note, I'll be coaching my former elementary school's team in the fall. Hopefully in a few years I'll be coaching my High School's team, because who knows how much grade 7 basketball I can handle watching. :scared:

Orange: Absolutely right about that. I've known many kids who practiced dunking in their spare time, and then would miss layups at crucial points in games. Ugh, how frustrating that was.
Blue: As do I, I had more than one of those types of players on my High School team last year, and I often wonder how much farther our team could've gone without 'em.

PS - The basketball forum should be used more. 👍

One point, huh? That must've hurt. :indiff: On the defensive rebound thing, when I talk to oldtimer Blazer fans, they always bring up Bill Walton. I guess when Walton used to play for the Blazers(won the only Championship for the Blazers. 👍 ), he'd go up for the defensive board and by the time he's landed, the ball would be in the hands of a player leading the fastbreak. :ill: That's something.

Good luck coaching little kids! You'll need it!! :P But seriously, remember to put the kids first. With your knowledge of the game and the pride you put in it, I'm sure you'll do great. :)

Yeah, it did. Eight seconds on the clock at the end and we were down by two. I got fouled, and hit on the first shot only to miss the second. :ill: It was the best game of my high school "career" too, mixed with the worst possible ending.
Er, yeah, I got over it. Worst smilie ever.

Ha, thanks. ;) I'll probably end up getting frustrated and just tell them to run manmakers for 2 hours. :sly:

That sucks! But forgetting about it is important. When you let that stuff bother you, it will becomes a complex. We see it in NBA all the time, don't we. ;)

Yes we do. Forgetting bad games or whatever isn't a real issue with me, like you said, you can't let it bother you. Plain and simple.

I'd say i'm a blue collar player.
:odd: Not sure I know what that means. Do you play on any teams?

a6m5: You say you've never played any organized basketball? You should definitely get involved in a league with friends or something. Pick up games are great, but can never compare to a league game. :)

I think he's trying to say his game's similar to Eduardo Najera. Nothing wrong with that! :)

I do agree with that. I've been invited on city league teams a few times, but either timing's been bad or it was teams I didn't want to join. :D

I do play against people with high school(state level) or college basketball experience sometimes. We run 4on4 or 5on5 during the winter(gym lease), but mostly run 2on2 and 3on3 during the summer. The only "official" games I've ever played were local 3 on 3 tournament, and we won in the corporate division by default. :D  I did nail the game winning 3 though. Yessssssssssss! 👍 Also, the guy on our team won the dunk contest and won $500. All our team got was a certificate for gourmet Pizzas. :guilty:

You lease a gym in the winter? That must be great, winter usually sucks for basketball unless you're on a team. During the summer here, one of the high schools near me has an open gym, running from 2-10pm Monday to Thursday, there's usually anywhere from 10-20 players there, it's good competition. ;)

The 3-on-3 Hoop It Up is the only official tournament I know of around here, and it's only for 2 days a year, and the last couple years it's rained and been cancelled. :indiff: Game winning three's pwn! 👍 500 bucks for a dunk contest? Not a bad first prize.

No, I'm only 5'10" and 146lbs, so I usually don't endup defending the big guys. I did end up taking a charge on this guy once. It was on a fastbreak, he's 6'5" and has dunked on people before. I play with this guy all the time, so I couldn't let him dunk on me(you'll never hear the end of it!). When I took the charge though, he flipped over in the air and landed on his back. :ill: He almost started crying in pain, and I seriously thought he was gonna have a spinal injury, but he was OK.

As long as schools are open, the school district leases gyms really cheap here. 👍 Usually the fee comes out to $50 or so for 10 - 12 of us. Considering it's for the whole school year, one night a week(2 hours), it's a great deal.

I hate the rain during summer! Along with strong winds, worst enemies of summer basketball. :D

I still can't belive all I got was damn certificate and a free pizza! :grumpy: The dunk that won the contest was awesome though. He bounced the ball at the backboard, banked it, caught it in midair for reverse dunk. But he was one of those guys, who spent waaaaay too much time practicing dunking. He wasn't that much help on the tournament end. This is a secret, but he was on the high school team, so technically, I don't think he could've accepted that $500 prize. :D

:scared: At least he was ok. I've never been dunked on, but I got a friend of mine dunked on once. I was covering this guy, about 6'2, and he hadn't done anything the whole game, so I was laying off him and not giving him any "respect" defensively wise. He caught it, and I expected him to pass, so I crowded him, and he took two dribbles to the hoop and dunked on one of my friends.

I played organized ball while I was in middle school. I think I sucked, but so did the rest of my team. I think I was a good rebounder. I remember the last year I played - I didn't really get any playing time (I don't know why, though - I wasn't that bad, but we had this competition at the end of the season (slam-dunk contest on an 7-8 foot hoop, sprints the length of the court dribbling in between cones, three-point contest, etc.) and I won. Part of the prize was 25 bucks (don't tell the NCAA) and the other was getting to play in the league's 3-pt shooting contest. I don't think I hit a single three, though. Heh.

But right now I think what I do best are those running teardrops from the top of the key. I have a pretty good fall-away from the free-throw line, too. My defense is a bit sketchy, and I have no penetration game.

Well, I can relate to you on that story. At our high school, we had a "Battle of the Grades" every year, and there was always a three point competition. So I ended up getting picked for my grade, and went up in front of the entire school and calmly proceeded to hit 2 for 9 - good enough for last place. Needless to say, I've never heard the end of that one.

Those teardrops are one of my favorite shots. I worked on mine a lot, and now the accuracy is better than my jump shots or hook shots. I'm a cutter, so when I drive, they quickly protect the rim or get in front of me. My layup skills are pretty good, but when I stop and pull up like 5ft from the rim for teardrop, I catch the defender off guard everytime. :D

On 3-pointers, you guys are probably better than me. I can shoot from outside just fine, but I am very streaky from the 3. Just shooting around, I can hit a bunch, but in a game situation, I gotta be open to make 3's.

I used to be the same way, could only hit a three if I was open in-game, and I think mainly because having a defender right there whom I hadn't played against before intimidated me. But as I built confidence in my game and shooting, I realized, it doesn't matter who's in my face, the ball's going in the basket. :sly: I think it's all about confidence. Then, of course, once you hit one or two with a guy defending you, he plays you tighter, which opens up the lane to the hoop and all that fun stuff, and also allows you to get hot from the outside.

Oh, yeah! I like to mix it up little bit, attacking inside, outside. I used to have killer first step(I'm not bragging, that's what other players called it :sly: ) that was nearly unstoppable. Most of the time, I'd just use it with my crossover to get around my defender, or pullup for short jumper. However, I'm 31 now, and lost my quickness after turning 28. With my quickness went my one-on-one defense. I used to be the best defender I know, under 6ft. I could stay in front of anybody, and that's if they actually got to touch the ball. Now I'm just an average defender, who occasionally fouls hard, down low. :D Offensively, I shoot more bank shots than Pippen and Duncan combined. Those are so easy to make, I'm surprised more players don't shoot them. I play with, and have played with a lot of players, but I can't think of anybody top of my head, who's consistently shot banks shots. They are harder to block as well.

You gotta love the killer first step! :D Ah yes, I've played defenders like you, the type that make you work your ass off to get open, only to realize you're not. One-on-one defense has always been the weakest point of my game, but I'd like to think I'm a very good "team" defender. By that I mean knowing when to help out and when not to, anticipating passes coming your way, timing help side blocks, defensive rotation, etc. I'm 5'11 and played the two guard on my team, but would almost always get more blocks than the taller players on my team, most of them coming from the help side. I'm not the quickest one-on-one defender, so I try to make up for that by being very aggressive. I'll usually crowd a player, trying to force him to drive to his weaker side, usually the left. Or if I know the player struggles with outside shooting, I'll play quite a bit off him, so I can cut him off easier when he tries to drive. It will always be the weakest part of my game though. :indiff: As for the bank shots, I definitely agree with you. Usually I'll only use them if I'm posting my defender up, or if I have short-mid range jumper, but they are definitely a higher percentage shot, you're right about that. 👍

So far in August, I've gotten blocked 5 times, all on layup attempts. :ouch: At least, I've been on the winning teams, which eases the pain. :D

If you have the ball, I'd always leave little bit of room to prevent penetration. But of course, that means you could be in trouble if your man can shoot. I don't play much with him anymore, but there's this friend of mine who used to be a starting SG for the team that won the state. He left the team, season before they won the championship due to a dispute the coach. Really sad, because he's probably the best player I've ever played against. He was not only quicker than me(even back when I considered myself quick), really really strong and can shoot the lights out consistently. Oh, what a nightmare guarding him. :nervous: I couldn't give him room, because of his shooting ability, but he was also one of those post up players that no matter how hard you foul him, he nails the shot like nothing happened. 👎 I haven't played with him for like a year, and he's gotten even bigger now. When I saw him last month, his arms were about size of small legs. When I nervously asked him that since his arms gotten so much bigger, his shooting must be little off. He replies, "Yeah, but I finally played little pickup game couple weeks ago. Took me few minutes, but it came back, no problem." I told him, we'll play again sometime, as long as somebody else would guard him. :D

For me it's the complete opposite of you guys.

When I'm all alone on the 3pt line I miss it half the time.

If I catch the ball, face the basket, and there's a defender, I will shoot and score. 7 or 8 out of 10.

I have a big ego, it drives me.

I play in a very violent league, so we go to be confident, we trash talk a lot. Loads of emotions.

See, I've never played organized basketball, so I don't know how I would perform in that kind of game. Almost every single one of the big time basketball players I've played with are about big egos and trash talking. I don't get affected by it anymore, but used to bother sometimes, when I was younger.<=what my face looked like when it bothered me. :D
