question for wheel users

How does the wheel affect your driving performance vs. the standard controller?

It seems like the standard controller allows for faster response, because to move from full side-to-side only requires moving my thumb about an inch; whereas, the steering wheel means having to turn an 11" wheel at least a turn and a half... doesn't that negatively affect your lap times?

with a wheel, you can be more precise. its more natural, and allows for better throttle and brake control. An alien using a gamepad can be just as fast as an alien using a steering wheel... i prefer the wheel since its more realistic, and i actually work up a sweat when playing Live for speed with my DFP.
i sweat more from doing 10 laps around aston national with the XRR than i do from running 2 miles in 12 minutes.

this has been discussed many many times before :P

umm... this really doesn't answer my question at all... I did look for this specific question and was unable to find anyone with a direct answer. There are many answers similar to the one Gabkicks gives here, and I am quite aware the overall experience is better in many ways, but that is NOT what I was asking.

HOW HAS USING A WHEEL AFFECTED YOUR LAP TIMES ?

That is all I am asking. Thanks for your time.

it depends on the person, with me, i got faster. if you spend countless hours playing with a controller, you will probably be slower with a wheel. there was a long discussion on this already.

There is no return after trying proper wheel(feed back). Immediately you find yourself having more fun with wheel. After practice you get your laptimes to match pad times and even go faster.

I cant drift with pad but i can with 900 deg wheel. So for me wheel is even faster than pad.

Sounds good so far, i went through the entire forum page by page and finally found the discussion. It sounds like some players are better with the wheel, and some are better with the DS, so the only way to find out is just dive in.
So I'm going ahead and taking the $300 plunge on the G25 :scared:

If nothing else, its probably worth the cost just to drive the GT40 on Nurburgring for fun, regardless of the time hehe

Keep in mind, that there are a few key things for using a wheel.

One: have a good set-up to mount the wheel and pedals. If you spend more time tryin got keep your set together, your laps will suffer and you won't enjoy it.

Two: expect 3 to 6 weeks to get back to where you were with a Dpad. Seriously. It'll take that time to get familiar with the tracks again and what you can and can't push the car. In time, you'll be faster with the wheel than with the DS2

Three: Set-up and take down take considerably longer. Find a permanent place to mount your wheel, and you'll enjoy it much more.

hmm, i hope you get g25 that works well. a few people have had some bad luck with theirs. You might want to check out live for speed so you can have use of that clutch and H shifter.

Oh man. I will NEVER go back to a controller for any Gran Turismo game. The wheel was the best thing I have ever done for the GT games.

I can drive faster, push the car harder, and get much lower lap times because you simply have more precise control over the brakes, throttle and steering.

I just hope I can get a G25 soon, because my GT Force Pro is coming of it's age. Plus, I also play Live For Speed sometimes, among other driving games.
