QUMI 3 Screen Projection Setup

I never create posts for my rig but I see a lot of people interested in 3 screen projection so I thought I would post my solution for reference/ideas since I had some free time this morning.

My rig uses QUMI Q2 projectors with 60.45" throw for 16:10 46" screens (24" x 39"). Projector Central has a great tool for determining throw, lumens, room lighting, etc...

You will want to be able to adjust the projectors and fine tune them for throw, angle, etc. To do this I used Fotomate LP01 macro focusing rails and mini tripod ball heads/shoe all available on eBay. Don't be afraid to buy from Hong Kong - they have free shipping, amazing low prices, and the product arrives in under 10 days. I used 2 focusing rails with a tripod head so I could adjust throw, alignment, and angle...

I built the projector frame using 8020 aluminum rails from Faztek - they seem to have best ricing and shipping costs. Since my screens are 46" at 45 degrees the projector segments are 12.75" at the projector lens throw distance (trigonometry). I trimmed the outside mounts to accommodate the QUMI size and lens offset (the lens is on the left side of the inverted QUMI) so my center mount was 12.75", left 11.475", and right 6.475" - did not want a huge frame hanging above my rig. I also used the QUMI video adapter so I could have DLP 3D synch.

For screen material I used 1/8" Home Depot vinyl coated MDF board - this stuff has awesome screen characteristics you can see here. I used black velvet projection screen tape on the borders to hide any spill over from the projects - it completely absorbs any light.

Here is a picture I took when I first turned on the system (nothing aligned yet). Sorry I did not have a fully setup picture on my PC right now - will retake one later and update. Hope this helps anyone thinking of 3 screen projection.

In my opinion this is the best possible setup as far as screens, if you're spending all that money why would you want bezels in the way?

The only thing I wonder is why so small vertically? I would think you would want it to be taller since you are using 3 different projectors.

You mean why 16:10? Hey I am in San Diego :-)

What bezels? the outer frame? IMO they could go from the ground to the ceiling that they wouldnt be in the way because the screen is clean from left to right...
TBH its one of the best looking 3 screen projection setup Ive seen in this forum (I would actually call it a 1 extra large screen projection setup)

Looking nice, cheap n cheerful little projectors these offering you a great screen configuration.

Have something similar screen wise in mind using "Plasma Screen Brackets" which I will connect MDF board to, then cover with screen material and framed borders on the outer and top bottom like you have. I can fit in 60"-65" per screen with the room space I have but will decide come testing what feels best.

Are you tempted however to consider a curved screen?

Nice 👍

Funnily enough, I've spent most the afternoon looking at suitable projectors for a similar setup. Keep finding myself coming back to those Q2's :) Any issues with them?

I like them as they're nice and small and offer a great picture (outstanding reviews too). Like you, I also don't want a massive frame looming above my rig!

Very nice setup. I would i had the space for something like that :)

Is that a ECCI wheel ?

I've had the Q2s for about 6 months and absolutely no issue. I have heard people have focus issues after they warm up due to the plastic lens but mine do not have that issue. The 3D is real good also. I had no budget and chose the Q2s for their size as 1080p did not matter to me while racing.

I tried a curved setup first - the 1/8 MDF curves nicely - even bought software but I liked the 45 degree angle better for racing. The outside two screens are peripheral vision for me so being at the angle does not seem to matter (at least to me)

Since the screen material/MDF is easy to curve. How/what would I attach to the back of the MDF so I can place in a 3 screen TV display mount I already have coming in the future? Why didn't you like the curved screen? I am super intrigued bc all the videos I see the curved screen look amazing.

Did you use black tape because of the bleed and bc of the screws? You have done an outstanding clean job.

Hmmmmmm, where have I seen this before? :P

I wonder :dunce:. I always wanted to hijack your thread but had some time this morning and thought this might be helpful for anyone trying to put up the 3 QUMIs. I am sure like me you tried a few other mount techniques so I did not want others to go through that :-).

It is actually real easy to make a curved screen with the 1/8" MDF. You buy 1/8" PVC tracking for lattice, take 1x3 lumber and make 6 pieces connected at 22.5 degrees each (make a top and bottom), draw the arc you want on the board and bend the PVC tracking to the arc - use screws in the track every 6 inches or so to mount it - do both top and bottom, connect them at the back ends of the 22.5 angles with 1/2" aluminum wire conduit 7 pieces height of display (don't mount together yet), cut the MDF to size, get your slave (wife or GF) to help you bend MDF into bottom track, get into top track, then clamp down the aluminum conduit to the top. You can even jigsaw the front to the exact arc (I did) and use velvet tape to hide the PVD tracking. I wish I took pics of mine but I dismantled because it was taking up too much room - looked professional.

I did not like the curved screen very much - was nice but I like the 46" flat in front of me....

Nice work Glow! Glad to see your progress. The Q2 is a great little projector.

I've got a couple of goodies coming in the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

For the record I always wanted a single pole mount. Its right behind my seat and clean. In the future I may mount them from a special mount I'm designing now. You'll see. ;)

glowplug...lovely clean setup mate, looks awesome :)

It's interesting to hear your thoughts on a curved screen as I've been toying with it for weeks but dont want to move my xboxes on just yet (for Forza). As soon as racing starts I seem to forget my screens are angled anyway :D

gentlemen, I didn't want to spill the beans but there is a way to keep both Forza, GT5, and PC racing games on both a curved and canted screen without changing any hardware. I've been working on this for a while. But I'm keeping it under wraps since the last two things I've innovated, other companies felt free to just use it as their own product. LOL

This time I'm going to get a patent for it if I can. Not planning on making big money with this but I have to see if I can at least get paid for my efforts.

Have any of you considered trying 3x Portrait lads?

You could easily get all 3 screens onto a typical 4:3 projector screen giving approx:
30" wide x 53" deep individual screens = approx 90" wide x 53" deep.

Something I had been thinking of giving a go.
Wouldn't be as much FOV of course but curious to see how it would look.

Sometimes I wish I would have stuck with my 3x 720p projector setup, but I just couldn't stand the 720p resolution and all the space it took up. Maybe one day when 4k projectors become affordable I'll look into another 3 projector setup.

This is the best looking amongst the triple projection setups on this forum though. I really like the way you did the screens. I think all that curving software junk is over-rated and overpriced anyways.
