American film maker John Hughes has died aged 59... :( Planes, Trains and Automobiles remains one of my favourite comedy films, whereas The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller's Day Off spoke for a whole generation (who are all now about 34  )

R.I.P

John Hughes, the US film-maker who directed a string of 1980s teen-oriented films including Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles, has died at the age of 59 after suffering a heart attack while visiting family in New York.

He was also a leading script writer, penning films such as Pretty in Pink and Home Alone, his greatest commercial success. His other films included National Lampoon's Vacation, Weird Science, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck.

Indeed. Some of this generation know him only from the movie "Dogma".

He was a great movie maker. I'll eventually forgive him for Home Alone 3.

Hughes was a staple for '80's movies. He will be missed.

RIP, Mr. Hughes.

What a shame - way too young. And TM, that generation extends up into the 40-somethings, too. I think 16 Candles is one of my favorite movies.

I always liked his work because it was usually set in Chicago - a refreshing change from the usual NY/LA axis.

Hats off to you, Mr. Hughes.

I was wondering why Cartoon Network was playing Home Alone 3. Seemed so out of left field.

What the hell are you doing watching the Cartoon Network in the first place? ;)

Tragic; he died way too young. He was a great contributor to '80s culture. His movies were fantastic He'll be missed.

My top 3 favorites:

16 Candles
Ferris Buellers Day Off
The Breakfast Club

Damn shame - his films were a big part of my youth.

He will be missed in a big way, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club are the films of his I will always remember.

I can't say I know much about him, but I always felt that a person that could make such a great movie as "The Breakfast Club" was a person indeed to be respected. R.I.P.

Undoubtedly, his movies helped shape a generation. The Breakfast Club, Weird Science and Ferris Bueler's Day Off helped shape me into the awkward twentysomething that I am today. In a world of American Pie and Harold and Khumar, I long for the John Hughes classics that actually said something by the end of the movie.

Damn. RIP John Hughes, because Planes, Trains, and Automobiles was plain awesome.

sorry, guys, your off by 10 years or so. the kids that Ferris Beuler and so on spoke for are 45 and grandparents for the most part. most of those movies came out while I was still in grade school and Junior high, between about age 12-14. the guys that could afford to go to wacky movies like that were, the classes of 85-90 or so, not my own age.

either way, thanks for the memories.
