Hey iracers,

I just raced skippy at limerock, and on lap 2 some wanker takes me out @ turn4 uphill, he was rite behind me on turn in and I gave him room to pass on outside then he doesn't lift I'm on his inside his car shoots over and took my bass out!! Wt? Was he thinking? NO!!!:( I don't need help. I can take myself out just fine!

Some people just need to think for a second or two! Maybe I'm just upset that I keep having bad luck in races, I'm a clean racer, I want to keep it that way! I am new to iracing, just turned class D. I test a lot and am not the fastest in Practice or in races but I'm not the slowest!:) I've been working on recovery from getting car out of shape then trying not to spin or lose control of car. Car control is very important. And should be to all who race! Thats all for now! Peace

Yeah, Lime Rock is a terrible place for passing, most people don't realise that there's only really one or two places where it's possible safely.

Yeah, don't change your line, especially in a corner, to let someone pass. Letting someone pass who is faster than you is perfectly fine, but do it the right way. If you are on a straight, and he is a good distance behind you, maybe 0.5 seconds or more, then you can kindly move over. But if he is right on your bumper, don't move, hold your line, and force him to make the clean pass around you. Once he gets to your side, if you are running out of road, let off the gas just a little.

Or a fun trick to tell if it's a noob or not, when they get along side of you on the straight, keep on the gas, and then brake just slightly later than you normally would. Noobs like to brake later than the person they are passing for some reason. You can sometimes get them to run straight off the course and get your position back. :)

I like to fake that I'm going to dive inside on turn 1 at Lime Rock Park, and a few spots at Okayama. Sometimes if they're watching their mirror and see you disappear they'll freeze and stay wide.

Don't go doing that on lap 2 or anything, but if you know you're faster and need a quick pass later in the race, get creative.

^^ haha Eric I love pulling the fake looks down the inside too! For one it makes me think I'm a real race car driver :). And 2 I imagine that I'm cooling the engine and brakes....

Hey guys
My practicing has paid off!:) I won my first skippy race. Started 1st had a good start and pushed hard in turn 1, by turn 4 I had 1.5s lead. It felt to easy, 1st incident free road race for me too!

Now I can practice for next weeks race!
Peace,

lime rock has to be my favorite track, it's so easy to get fast there. I don't feel like it translates to other tracks though, especially driving the mx-5 on lime rock. I use the brake all of 1 time per lap with that combo

hahahaha I've done that before, usually turns into an easy position change.

I had two knuckleheads try to split me coming down down West Bend.
I had the outside line, and got split. All three of us got spun.
This was on lap 1!
Almost like half the field just got done playing NFS.

You don't really ever want to be two-wide from west bend to the front straight. You both have to sacrifice a lot of corner speed and anyone behind you will get a good run on both of you. If someone ever gets alongside me at Lime Rock, I let them by. Its too risky.

At lime rock I usually make my passes between the top of the hill and T1, the rest is too narrow and slick, occasionally if there is a big gap between the guy behind me and the guy behind us and he goes to make the pass, chances are that he'll go wide and I'll switch back and dice with him to see if he freaks out or even fake it, but guys that are considerably faster, I just let them go

Racecraft can tricky if it's newer driver to car, but I always try to run my line til I can pull off line clean.

I would say go practice in a practice room with a lot of drivers and try to drive in a pack. Not really easy as every guys in there try to do hotlaps so their name is high up the ranking, but it's doable.

Practice racecraft in a race would be to run before you can walk. And a lot of guys do this and then the rest of the guys in the same room come here to whine about it how stupid people are.

Watch the driving school videos iRacing made for you to watch, and follow their route to racecraft.

Test Car On Track..

Become confident with the car and track

Go into a practice room online and learn how to drive around other drivers

Then go race when you feel confident around others.

They also suggest you to do a Time Trial and it's a good idea, then you have to finish a set of laps without incidents and if you can't do that you shouldn't go race others yet.

To learn how others act on the track you have to race, but in iRacing pickup races you will never be fully learned on how others race as there will always show up someone you haven't raced. But to have good racecraft you first will have to be able to control your car. If you have a predictable line for people around you racecraft will come to you more easily than if you have to learn how to control your car around others people.
Then you just end up on someones hate list really fast :scared:

So I really don't agree on what Eric said, don't go ruin someones race before you are ready. I have no idea who runfast1 is, maybe his a iracing god for all I know, but for every new guy to iracing.

The first time you try the car, should not be in a race!!

But to make your racecraft more perfect I would do like Eric said, but I think a lot of people here take to much for granted. And some of the tips new guys ask get the answer a pro should have. You really need to learn how to walk before you can run.

Well said Erik! I like to practice running the car for 20 laps with no spins, run offs, or wrecks. If I mess up then I start over until I get it, then I join a Practice room! I've only been iracing for less than a year. I'm class B, and haven't been racing much lately. Testing mostly. It's a hobby for me, and can be fun at times! Race clean! Not Mean! That's my motto! Peace y'all

I am driving in the Riley prototype car. I really feel not so confident in the car. when i reach first gear i simply get some massive oversteer, either when braking or accelerate. It cost me some practise and a good setup to get the car working around daytona.

I did some race, i was more battling the high temperatures instead of other people. Anyway once i have controle over the car and track racing becomes a diffrent thing. I get very nervous at certain things, like:

1. When start the race. Its like driving on ice. afraid to hit someone or being hit.
2. When someone is behind me and is faster. i can't keep my head cool if it happens. even though i am extra careful i intend to make a mistake anyway.
3. when i am faster than someone i can wait to the right moment to pass. But once i pass i can't pick up my pace and i make a mistake eventually.

Its a good thing i know were it go's wrong for me. Maybe i will never be a pro. But racing will be the only thing what can improve my skills.

Keep testing and practice till your confident. then race with confidence!

Thats the problem the confidence usually dissapears when i got on the grid. But yeah practise is the way to go.

Also i switch alot between diffrent cars, thats not good either. I am testing diffrent cars and tracks. I should stick whit one or 2 cars each season. I am driving whit 5 diffrent cars now. :ill:

Yeah it's the different cars that are probably going to hurt you. I'm currently only racing in ovals. Switching between nationwide and trucks. I don't plan on racing any road races besides our league because I just can't put in the time and dedication to be fast in the road courses. I hate not being competitive.

I did same thing. I think you gotta find a car that ya like to race and stick with until your comfortable in it. it took me 20 or so races till i got a top 5. then i got first win then another. but ive had 97 races, only 4 wins. and 45 top 5s. all road races. sounds bad. I plan on getting better, I HOPE!

peace

Couple of things:
While doing TT's help promote clean laps, as far as I'm concerned they don't help much with racecraft.
I have only been in 2 races, both times I was taken out, and lost a ton of points. So I stopped racing, and only did TT's with a few tests.
After doing so many TT's that my eyes got blurry, I now possess A licenses.
All I did was drive around @ 70-80% for as many laps as I could get in.
A little self history, I'm a former moto-X and roadracer.
Have lots of seat time in GT5.
Not one of the top drivers there either.
If I drive cleanly, but on the edge, I'm still close to 5 seconds of the top drivers in every car and track I've attempted.
I know one problem is that I never learned how to do set up.
Even when racing for real someone did it for me, all I did was ride and give feedback to my tuner.
Signed fustrated :)

I'm looking forward to getting past my Rookie license and get into some better populated stuff. I've had some competitive races and I'm nowhere near the top, in 14 races (all nvidia cup) I have 5 top 5's and 1 win with a 3.67 SR, but that doesn't tell the whole story. I'm usually a few seconds off the top couple, but sometimes the guys at the back are a real pain. I KNOW everyone needs to learn, heck I've been there, but I see some real blatant complete ignorance of the blue flags especially last night. I had a guy hold me up for 2 laps, and then when I finally got on him he fought me tooth and nail, and I was 2 laps ahead! Another guy fought me and when I finally got past him he blew the brake zone and rearended me.

I kind of wish there was a bit more of a structure or ease in for rookies so that they can get to know the rules and get used to it. Because for someone who has been sim racing for a while that can get up to speed quickly, rookie races can be tremendously frustrating.

There are no blue flags (at least I've never seen one and I should have by now ;) ).

That is the rule of iracing and I find by remembering that I have no automatic right to get past at the next corner, that I avoid a lot of incidents.

More often than not I am faster anyway and can overtake at an appropriate place on the track, or they are paying attention and move over.

You may just be too fast to get them. If you're being lapped you will see a Blue flag with a yellow stripe. I've gone many sessions without, but I have seen them as well, especially of course when I've crashed and returned to the track.

Definitely not too fast! Get lapped regularly. I will keep an eye out for them now.

... Road has been practice only. All my races are ovals so far. Guess that's the difference.
