rate this game's physics

i haven't really played prologue before and only played gthd in store, with a controller, so i'm curious. and it's hard to judge playing without a wheel if you are used to it

how does this game stack up against LFS for example. I know the graphics and how it feels like you are really sliding from it adds realism.

Dont pay attention to Patriot... He's unhappy because theres no updates... but anyway... If youre a real Sim racing fan, then GT5:P, even though it has shortcoming because its not the full game, is very good in my opinion... Physics are good and the overall feel is good... never played LFS fully... only a couple of laps... but then went straight back to GT5:P... If youre in a race with good, clean racers this game is the BOMB, I cant imagine any other game doing it better... Steering wheel is also a must IMO (no offence to the 6axis user :D)... I played GT1- GT4 with a controller and with GT5:P finally bought a wheel and I was kicking myself I didnt do that earlier...

I'm sure I'll get flamed by the fanboys even though I bought my PS3 exclusively for the Gran Turismo series, but I'd rate GT5P's physics realism a 5/10. It's definitely the best overall console racing series due to its depth, presentation and physics, but in my opinion, its realism is greatly exaggerated by fans. I don't think improving the realism of Gran Turismo's physics much beyond its current level is feasible for Polyphony, as they have to design the game with the knowledge that the vast majority of people will be playing the game with gamepads.

FYI I'd rate both rFactor and LFS at about 7/10 as far as physics realism go.

Driving a car in rFactor for example, with all assists on medium is similar to the difficulty of driving in GT5P with all assists off. All assists off in rFactor is much more of a challenge. Of course this varies from mod to mod.

As for GTHD, it's nowhere near GT5P when it comes to physics. The physics have come a long way. On my physics realism scale I'd give GTHD 4/10.

Why not just merge all this new threads that are so keen in discussing the same matter over-and-over-again into one new mega-gigantic-ultima-thread-of-the-threads thread and let the forum breathe normally.

Here are my proposals for the new merged-thread possible titles:

1. Official GT5:P Physics Debate - come inside and speak or shut up forever
2. GT5:P Official Thread of Physics and random "Mine is Longer" debates
3. Physics of GT5:P Official Thread of Doom - Abandon all hope, ye who enter here
4. GT5:P vs. Law of Gravity and Traction - Official Physics Thread of no consensus
5. GT5:P vs. Rest of the video-games Physics or why is Kazunory right when he does not play other video-games and drives the real cars instead

Please, create the poll also about this - I was on the half way to make this reply a separate thread but today I feel somewhat against moves of spontaneous conceptual art.

@ amar212

What do you smoke to be so patient??? just kidding.
if PD had given us some info, we'll be not like lions in a
cage. But nothing to do about it.

A Happy 2009 Year too all of you(and maybe it's the year of GT5??)

I know it's your opinion and all.
But how can you call GT5P a 5/10 and GTHD a 4/10? WOW, GTHD is really like GT4 with minor tweaks. GT5P has changed so much, I would sepereate them by more then one point.

For me I never play LFS. I have G25, I play rFactor, Race 07, GTR2, and GTR-EVO.

PC games All together on average I would give 7/10 for GT5P I would give same score of 7/10 Because with G25, or any other logitech wheel, it really feels like playing a PC game.

Fair enough. Let me revise my scores:

GTHD: 3/10
Forza 2: 3.5/10
GT5P: 5/10
Ferrari Challenge: 5.5/10
rFactor/LFS/GTR: 7/10

Remember these scores are on how realistic I feel their physics are, not ratings for the games.

HEH! thanks better 👍

okay, out of those who have voted.. how many of you have driven any other 4-wheeled vehicle than shopping kart?

From personal experience I can tell that a 350z running S1's or S2's in GT5P feels very similar to how a real 350z feels with stock tires fitted. Whether the actual numbers are correct (e.g. max amount of lateral G's, maximum cornerning speeds) I can't confirm, but they got the feeling right IMO. Can't comment on other cars, not having driven them enough in real life.

Personally, I find it hard to judge which game has better physics, despite owning a reasonably fast car and having driven several different cars on track IRL. I really can't separate it from the rest of the package (visual, audio, force feedback, track layouts, etc.).

For instance, when playing GTR Evolution one immediately notices the rich and gritty sound effects, which add very much to realism. Also, the FFB in GTR is much better at communicating what is happening with the car than GT5P. The visuals in GT5P are way beyond anything out there, which greatly adds to the level of realism. The track layouts of GT5P are also very realistic when compared to real life.

To me, realism is not just about physics, it's about the whole experience.

^amen. from my experience I can tell that they got the body roll and FWD understeer right, as well as the twitchy nature of MR's..

I never driven a shopping kart, but I drive my car. On street, I never race on streets because I do not want to harm others etc..

I rate GT5P a 7/10 because of some research, lap times, and even how cars feel compared to my! I think they are doing really really good job with everything. Just like PC race sims. I might even give higher score on FFB to GT5 over PC sim racers.

How would you rate GT5P?

Agreed. From the only car in the game that I've driven in real life (and on a track) - the MINI, GT5P seems pretty good to me. And I agree with Amar, the repetitive threads are getting mighty boring. Ideally we need a sticky on the subject because it comes up so often.

7½-8 out of 10.. There's some things that irk me, yet I can't quite put my finger on it.. :odd: otherwise I feel that it's spot on.

It's really tough to put a number on it. With every generation, the hardware and software they run become more advanced and allow for higher levels of sophistication. Had this poll come up back during the PS1 and GT1 days, people might also have rated PD's first generation effort a 7 or 8 out of 10 simply because it broke some new ground and was perhaps a little closer than we had achieved up to that point. For people like me who remember playing games such as the original Pole Position, well, we were already reaching impressive levels of 'realism' ten years ago. But compared to the real thing? No, we still have a long way to go.

Just imagine for example, what sophisticated consumer level simulators might be like in 2020. They will probably be light years ahead of what GT5P currently provides and yet, they likely still won't be close to the real thing.

All things considered, I think GT5P is a great effort and well deserves some (certainly not all) of the kudos bestowed on it. But nobody here, sitting at home in their Playseat and G25, should think for a minute that they could equal their on-line times in a real car. And I doubt we'll be able to say that in 2020 either, by which point in time those with a thought of nostalgia will look back on GT5P as a 'good effort'. For it's day.

I've driven numerous cars from the game, in real life. Some at higher speeds than others, but it's quite easy to judge the realism of the physics when you've driven a car in real life and in the game right after. ;)

gt5p physics are good... but not as good as lfs.

id classify lfs more as a sim and gt5p half way between arcade and sim... shame lfs cant run in linux as would be great on the ps3 then lol

GTHD: 3/10
Forza 2: 3.5/10
GT5P: 5/10
rFactor/LFS: 7/10
iRacing : 8/10

:dopey:

I've only played FM2 and GT series out of the ones you listed. I agree with GT5p, but would bump FM2 up to 4/10 just for having decent car collision physics.....i.e. when you bump another car it acts accordingly.👍

Good point, fixed.

I'd give the physics a 6, of course due to lack of damage...

Wow I never though having Damage or not would effect the physics. Are they not completely different. I mean I know if your car was damaged then it would drive differently but been as it isn't present in the game it can't effect the physics.
