Refuelling

McLaren boss Ron Dennis has slammed F1 fuel rig makers Intertechnique as "appalling".

Speaking in the wake of Michael Schumacher’s pit fire in Austria, Dennis said the French company showed little or no interest in working with the teams to solve problems with the refuelling rigs.

When asked if Intertechnique were proactive in sorting problems, Dennis told Autosport magazine: "They are, to be honest, appalling.

"Most of the efforts to optimise the equipment have been made by the teams and the FIA.

"We realised a long time ago that the right way to get the best out of these systems was to take the responsibility ourselves."

Dennis added that the fire which struck Schumacher should not have been possible because of fail-safe devices on the rigs.

He said: "What you had there was something that technically shouldn’t be able to happen."

I think Ron said it all here

Actually, I'd like to see refuelling banned; the cars and fuel cells are safe enough to withstand an accident. There's no justification for the extra pit stops and lack of action due to "just waiting for pit stops for passing".

It's just an added danger that deosn't need to be there. Fuel mishaps have been rare (3 accidents now in almost 10 years), but it's still dangerous.

Instead, Intertechnique should make wonderful beer-bongs with thier superior technology.

I agree with Tsleng. Without it, the race strategies would be a lot different, a lot more plain. It allows the teams to develop a more complex strategy for the race for overtaking, I guess...

I disagree with the team strategy; that's like saying Ron Dennis ought to be handed the trophy, not Coulthard or Raikonnen. So a chess match is exciting? Maybe if you're playing, but not to the spectators or viewers, in my opinion.

Besides, if a driver feels that passing should only take place in a pit lane that's restricted to 50-some miles per hour; and the driver just thinks "Hmmm, why try to overtake, when I can just hope he's on a different tire strategy than me?" That isn't very exciting racing.

I'd rather the driver played a greater role in the control of the race, rather than a team manager regulate when overtakng should occur. Before there were fuel stops, you had to carefully conserve your tires, and thus, the driver called more of the shots. But there were two-stop, one-stop, and even non-stop strategies, and to me, that is more exciting to watch.

If refueling was banned then cars would need to become bigger to accomodate larger fuel tanks capable of holding enough fuel to last an entire race. This would make the cars heavier and the action much slower. Plus we wouldn't get some of the fantastic looking cars we see on the track these days!

i dont think so

Refuelling is a huge part of the sport now, different strategies(sp) being played out, makes for some great action

hmm i cant really see where your coming from with formula 1 is like watching a chess match...if ya realy think its comparable then u should'nt watch F1 in the first place! Also about your line of "Besides, if a driver feels that passing should only take place in a pit lane" no thats not it at all it just gives a another opportunity to overtake (e.g. ive never driven at monaco <obviously> but the drivers say it is almost impossible to overtake...dya remember when coulthard was following pizzonia for 30laps or something the other year. If there were no pit stops in places like monaco there would barely be any position change at all ...is that what u want???) i dont really see how a driver conserving his tires in exciting to watch. they would never push incase they locked a wheel or something. Your point about that driver needing to play a bigger part in the race (there spose to be banning traction control soon) is true though i just dont think the no pit stops thing is the way forward.:)

Monaco is always the race that people bring up when talking about lack of passing. It doesn't really mean anything because Monaco is really about other drivers making mistakes. It's about the long-term laptimes.

Oh, and it was Enrique Bernoldi that Coulthard was following.

yeah but its not as good waiting for a driver to make a mistake cos sumtimes the drivers just dont very often although if it was wet at monaco im with you... id rather see overtaking though. yeah their both brazilian and both been booted out of jaguar there the same thing right?lol

actually bernoldi was at arrow, and jungle boy pizzonia was krap to start with. There should be an option to be able to fuel cars for the entire race, but allow for pit stops if so desired. Altho, then wilson and the other mobile chcanes would fill'er up and stop any action alltogether :(

The paradoxical problem with F1 and overtaking is that to go faster, more aerodynamics are used. the more aerodynamics that are used, the harder it is to over take cos the overtaking cars aerodynamics are stuffed by the car in front. :(
