Should Gran Turismo go back to 6 cars offline? I only ask the question as I reflect on when Gran Turismo began. The game is much like the BMI/Best Motoring/Hot Version videos. For the most part, in BMI track tests with base road cars, there are a maximum of 6 cars. Gran Turismo 1-4 only had 6 cars(GT5 starts with 8) and depending on races, it wasnt half bad. I've had me aome good battles without having to slow down for AI.

In BMI track tests with race cars, they get in as many as they can fit. So, 16 in the current GT games is pretty good. Would the game be better if offline if it went back to only using 6 road cars? Does it make sense to have a full grid of 16 when using race/tuned cars only? Did you have more fun in the early Gran Turismo games with just 5 cars to race against than you do now with 15?

A choice of 1-15 additional cars should be an option in Arcade Mode but, thats where I'll stop that topic.

The only reason less would be better is if that was the only way to make the AI smarter and faster.
Other than that it's a ok number.
Would like to see a few more some day and a lot more on the long endurance ones.

Thats pretty much what I'm getting at. Though, GT5 races in A-spec that I notice have good AI for all 16 cars are: Tuning Car Grand Prix, Historic Racing Car, Lamborghini Exclusive, Supercar Festival, GTWC, La Festa Cavallino, American Championship, Pick-Up Truck Challenge and Japanese Championship.

Unlike most I'd be fine with 6-8 cars on a track again. I don't enjoy playing catch-the-rabbit with 16 cars, so I doubt I'd like to do it with double the amount of participants.

How is this in any stretch of the imagination a good idea?

Its not about good or bad. Its about your opinion. Does the game work better with more or less cars offline. If you play offline, would 5 ROAD CARS be enough for you to have fun? Does 15 other AI race cars suit the game better? As mentioned above, maybe with less cars, AI could be tweaked to be better. It seems the race car AI are fast enough(except that darn SuperGt Lexus SC430!).

The solution to better AI should not be less cars. No other game has had to do that.

I don't see how less cars is better than more in any situation.

So would I. For endurance races it can be 16 cars on track, but for the other three events, I wouldn't mind if it was either 6 or 8 cars. Just make sure the rabbit races are done and over with, I hate them so annoying.

I'd be happy if they add Qualifying sessions for all races :)

And a better AI (I don't like that granny braking the AI do)

The AI should be tweaked to be a lot better with at least the current number of rivals. Other games manage to do it, so it is no excuse. No, five rivals is not enough to have fun, it is 2013 and I expect the level of immersion of a current racing game to reflect that. Six car grids do not reflect any healthy racing series in real life, as such it is unrealistic and breaks the immersion.

Any other perceived problems with 16 car grids, such as starting too far behind the leader, is due to PD not getting rolling starts right, the lack of qualifying, or PD deliberately starting cars 30 seconds ahead of the player. Not the fact that there is 16 cars on the grid. PD should not try to resolve perceived issues by removing improvements made since 2004.

I want to do VLN races so I'll take at least 40 cars thanks. If GTA can have circa 20 cars on my screen at anyone time plus buildings plus peds plus music plus scripted chat with fancy lighting and weather then I fully trust PD to blow my socks off. :-)

And you think the gap in the seasonals would have been smaller with fewer cars?
It would probably just mean more space between each car. With double the amount of cars (24-32) it would at least make some sense as to why the leader is so far ahead of you at the start.

I agree. For a racing series? No. For a Road Car race/comparison, it works with less cars in real life(there's even a "rabbit")

ROAD CARS

SUPERCARS

I never saw Gran Turismo racing series in that light, nor do I think it is something developers should ever aspire to. It is a racing game.

I actually agree. With smaller production car series on smaller tracks I often prefer less cars. I kinda liked the aura that came with GT1-4 because of this. It's quite possible that I just don't like real racing and prefer something a bit more relaxed. But yes, I think there should be at least a few events where there are less cars. For entry level events at the least. Like, have the Sunday cup with 6 cars. Then introduce another cup with about the same level of cars, but more on the track, more races and more money to be won. The same for the Clubman cup. Everyone wants more A-spec events, don't they? So let's have some classic events as an introductory level and supplement it with some higher level racing with more entrants and on more varied tracks.

I don't want less cars for the higher levels of racing, though... the closer to reality the better there. I'd still like some special events in addition to that with a theme and less cars - something a bit more casual, like a 90's supercar showdown with only 1 of each model of car, so 6-8 total. Maybe I'm not the norm, but I don't always want ultra competitive, high adrenaline racing, there's more to loving cars than serious racing.

This. For endurance races, again, should be 16 cars on track for Le Mans and 24 Hours. That's where hardcore racing comes in place. For regular events, it should be relaxing and fun with 6 - 8 production cars on track, where you just enjoy competing other cars with yours. :)

If they provide close packed racing with 6 to 8 cars, I would be fine with that. 16 cars on track and just playing catch-up doesn't add a lot for me. Qualifying and standing starts should be there for most of the races. I prefer 8 cars with good AI rather than 16 cars with poor AI.

Why do people seem to assume that there is a negative correlation between the number of AI cars and the quality of the AI (i.e. the fewer the cars, the better the AI)?

Because it's convenient.

I sure hope this never happens; there's no reason to ever knock the maximum number down, only to further expand it. If people want to race with less cars on a track, give them the option, but I can't imagine the amount of flak PD would (rather rightfully, IMO) take if the game never allowed more than 6-8 cars on track.

Bathurst circa 1968. Retro, vintage or historic?

You know, going by the title I was slightly excited by the thought of a "retro" version of GT, complete with nothing but the best assortment of cars from a given period.

Six cars on track would make for some very lonely races.

The more cars, the better, in terms of coming closer to a full field for most racing series. I sincerely hope GT6 A-spec races utilize more cars than GT5 - there should be an option to run a full grid of 16 cars in all but the beginner mode of racing.
