Daytona Beach, Florida- It’s official! This morning just past the 7:30 East Coast time, Richard Petty has stepped up and responded to the open challenge left by Tony Stewart.

Petty called into the popular Sirius NASCAR Radio Station with excitement in his voice and confirmed that he is willing to take Danica Patrick on in equal equipment, one on one.

Anytime you have a PR event involving one of the cars, it's a stunt, even if it's silly and pointless like this. So yes, seeing an F1 car drive down streets in a PR stunt, regardless of your petty views(pun not-intended).

I wouldn't NASCAR as a whole is a joke, but you have to wonder why they do these things when their reputation is suffering because of it. Things like this reinforce a 'rednecks with V8s turning left and having brawls' kind of stereotype, when they should be trying to boost the image and make it look more professional.

NASCAR's a commercial sport like any other, things like this are all about brand visibility. Why not whip up the channels a bit? If there's a market there's a market, it's a salesperson's job to sell to them.

We might not like the mysoginism implied in this challenge but as an F1 fan (where the drivers are still applauded to the podium by a long line of luscious leggy lovelies) I have to recognise that NASCAR isn't the only sport that could look to modernise itself a little.
