Rowan Atkinson crashes his McLaren F1

£8 million for a McLaren F1? Is that the going rate or is this a ridiculously serendipitous profit?

Seems to be the going rate - or rather, what ever the seller wants, they'll get. I know they were at the £5m at the beginning of the year, but Atkinsons car is now practically 'factory fresh' so i guess that adds value. I'd have thought that after 20-25 years the carbon chassis will have lost some of its integrity. A new one would certainly be stiffer.

Yeah there's very little you could have bought in 1997 for ~£500,000, use it every day and have it appreciate by 7.5 MILLION POUNDS!

Should have bought one if these instead of a house!.... unless it's in the centre of London.

And this isn't even a pristine example, this is the cut and shut McLaren F1 price  Good ones with low mileage go for like £10 mil.

I think Rowan's fame has added quite a bit as well. An example with this many miles & 2 accidents would have raised a few eye brows regardless of the factory's efforts.

Not quite. Yet.

The past couple cars that have exchanged hands publicly have been around $8-10 million US, which is around £5-7 million tops I believe. And this includes one owned by Michael Andretti that sold for $10.5/£6.7 million. A white one from Japan reportedly asked $14 million/£9 million and that's been possibly the highest one on public record because it only had 1,000 miles on it & the only white one in existence. So, Rowan's car having 40,000 miles more & 2 accidents whilst still bringing in $12/£8 million is more of a result of his fame. As hinted above, there's no way this example would have come $2 million short of the 1,000 mile example otherwise. Actually, it may have been the cheapest one ever sold in the last decade without Rowan's name attached.
