i'm not sure it really belongs here, but i figured since we photoshoppers hang here, i'd ask.

i recently switched to WinXP Pro, and of course made a copy of all the data i had on some CD-RWs. everything works fine, except for Photoshop. I keep on getting "illegal operation errors" every time i select something from a picture, and copy it to another. nothing works after, i have to exit the program and restart, only to get the same exact problem. Is it because the images i'm using are read only (meaning i copied the files from the CD to the hard drive) or is it because XP doesn't like Photoshop 6.0?

If that's normal, i think Win98 will come back on the computer. It's less stable, but it works better.

Alright - I'm guessing you downloaded Photoshop because you backed it up on to a CD-RW.

Did you copy the actual Photoshop file (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop 7.0 or wherever it was installed) or the download file?

If you copied the C:\... file you probably left a file out that is needed to run Photoshop sucessfully or, if you copied the download across the file was probably corrupted some how whilst putting it on to the CD-RW.

I don't know much about technical problems, this is just my theory.

I have Win XP pro.
And I run Photoshop 5.5 6.0 and 7.0 with no problems.

Maybe you should try to reinstall photoshop, PunkRock ??

already done that... seems to work better now, but it still keeps on crashing once in a while (which, i assume, is somewhat normal) I received a copied version from a friend, which included a few other Adobe programs as well.

I have terrible problems with performance on my Athlon with Photoshop 6, but no crashes.

There is a 6.0.1 patch out for Photoshop, last I knew. Do you have that?

well go figure, it works pretty darn well now...

ahh, stupid computers.
