SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Sao Caetano defender Serginho died Wednesday after collapsing during a Brazilian championship soccer match.

The 30-year-old player likely suffered cardiac arrest, doctor Marco Aurelio Cunha said. The official cause of death was not immediately released.

Serginho collapsed away from the play 59 minutes into the match against Sao Paulo at Morumbi Stadium.

Players from both teams quickly called for medical assistance when Serginho fell unconscious inside Sao Caetano's penalty box. Doctors rushed to the field and attempted to revive him CPR.

Serginho was still unconscious when he was taken to Hospital Sao Luiz in Sao Paulo, doctors said.

Players watched in apparent disbelief as Serginho was taken away from the field in an ambulance, some crying and others praying. The game was suspended shortly after the Serginho was stricken.

"We did what we could do, but the situation was very serious from the moment he fell to the ground," doctor Jose Sanchez said.

Serginho is survived by his wife, Eliane, and his 4-year-old son.

Earlier this year, a third-division player collapsed and died during training in Budapest, Hungary, and Hungarian player Miklos Feher collapsed in Portugal during a match between his club Benfica and Vitoria Guimaraes. He died shortly after in hospital.

In 2003, Cameroon star Marc-Vivien Foe collapsed during a semifinal match at the Confederations Cup and later died. He was found to have had a heart attack caused by an enlarged left ventricle.

I was watching this live on TV last night, the guy suddendly just fell to the ground, so creepy.

I remember the incident with Mark Vivien foe it's kinda strange if you think about it, these people attain high levels of fitness and have regular health checks. They aren't 250 pound fattasses (err no pun intended). It seems strange they hadn't found out about Mark-Vivien Foe 's hart condition earlier, eh I dunno. Did all these players have the same heart condition or was it diagnosed as something different. I wonder if there has been simmilar incidents in other sports.

Err, exactly which pun did you unintentionally create here? I don't get it...

Sorry...but you know there's a big side-track about the correct spelling of the word Hallowe'en (or Halloween) in one of the Rumble Strip threads started by Famine...no warnings to stay on topic to be found, either.

Well, having just read the Halloween (!) thread, there is an argument for how the correct spelling of the word relates to the history behind the holiday. I cant see much connection between some poor chap dying playing soccer and a pun involving a members name

Back on topic please :)

Same happened to a student while I was going to high shcool. The guy just fell on the ground during a handball practice. It took them a few minutes to realize something was really wrong, at first they thought that he just wast exhausted. When they did it was too late. That's really something you don't expect for a 15 year old teenager.

Khalilou Fadiga of Bolton Wanderer's was involved in a heart scare just last night when he collapsed during the warm up for their league cup game against Totenham. He was a former Inter Milan player who had heart surgery in April this year and isn't the first Inter player to have heart problems as Nwanku Kanu also suffered the same condidtion

since when is 250 a fatass?
