Servers, Coding, Developing. Any tips?

For dabbling with various distros I picked up a couple USD thumb drives on sale (Amazon or Newegg, forget which). I download a live CD, install it on a USB stick, and boot it up. Fairly quick and painless, quicker than setting up a distro in VirtualBox.
