Several Steps Away From Greatness. (AKA Lack of Vision)

Hi all, you who have taken the time to look at this thread.
I am a GT player since the first incarnation, way back. I feel I cannot be the only one who is very disapointed with the way this game has evolved over the years ?
I love the game, and all of the games in the GT series, as I think you all must do, else you would not be on this forum. However I feel cheated at the way the game has been developed over the years.

PD owe me nothing, and I have nothing but admiration for the effort they have put in to the game and the results of that effort, but come on, how frustrating is it for the long time players who know how good this game could be ?

There are many aspects that are brilliant about this game. Despite my disappointment at the development progression of the game I continue to play, and given my cynicism in the gaming industry as a whole at this point that counts for a lot, not least in the opening of my wallet.

My point ? Frustration at how good this game could be. It is constraining, where it need not be. My suggestion ? Open this game up. Let people create their own championships, let people create their own specialized races, allow people to utilize the assets of the game for thier own satisfaction.

I am not sure what is going on within PD, but you is missin a trick innit.

Thats all I want to say. Now you can diss me, or lock this thread as you see fit. Or maybe discuss if you like.

Not specifically about the community features raweer, though any progress in that direction is good for sure. More that we cannot use the existing assets in the game and open them up a bit. For example take any car, and any track, create any race series you like.

Everyone has a vision of their ideal game, and I can see why this game has gone the way it has, for financial reasons etc. (may be other reasons) I am just intrigued and annoyed that more people don't want more from this potentially fantastic game.

I just don't like it when features get removed like the test track for acceleration and top speed. Cool tracks like Seattle and Midway. Horns, I hate I can't change my horn anymore.

This ain't a PC game...
Wow, you're ignorant...

Yes it does seem like a step back I agree, I used to like those tracks too, I especially miss the test track for accel and speed. But that may just be the ocd in me lol.

Not sure what pc games have to do with this. I love pc games and will continue to play them but that wasn't the point I was making. I was just saying I fell in love with Gran Turismo from when I first played it, and still love it, but think it could be a whole lot better. Do you disagree Convergent ?

Certain platforms can only do so much. PC has no limit really. His point being it might not be possible for GT to incorporate something as in depth as that.

GT6 is my favorite GT game so far, but it could become better as you mention. Seeing recent additions to the current game gives me the impression that they are beginning to take steps in the right direction, but we're still not quite there.

There is no limitation in the PS3 that would prevent you from creating your own championships. It is essentially just doing excactly what the career mode already does with some different animations and a fill in the blanks type of form. We also know from the "secret menu" from GT5 that it's already easily possible to set up races and choose your opponents, and this is simply an extension of that.

Ignorance = lack of knowledge. What knowledge is he lacking?

Project Cars is going to break new ground on the PS4, for the first time attempting to bring a real, honest to God racing sim to life on a console. It may turn out to be a giant flop but I suspect it's going to go a long way to whetting the appetites of many a longtime GT fan that finds a real life racing atmosphere missing from the GT series. I would guess a couple of million GT fans will try PCars long before they get a look at GT7 and IMO, once you try PCars it's going to be hard to go back to GT's arcade style career mode. GT may feel they need to respond to this and what they OP is suggesting would be a step in that direction. The PS4 opens up a whole world of possibilities, we need to think bigger than we ever have as to what is possible in the GT series because the possibilities are nearly endless moving forward. The game will only be limited by the imagination and vision of Kaz.

Poly (much or many) phony (fake) it's all in the name. (yes I realize they have added an extra 'e')
They have never hidden what they are, it's in their name.
We reward them for lame returns, so we get what we deserve.
Now will anyone promise not to buy GT7, if not they won't ever change.
No we will all buy it as we are suckers...
They hand us Poo-Poo suckers & we stuff them in our maw...
We have no one to blame, look in the mirror...
I'm looking for an excuse to buy a PS4, & GT7 will be it...

Speak for yourself. GT6 sales definitly prove that GT is no longer the automatic buy it once was. I think they really need to do something special with GT7 or they risk making the momentum loss from GT6 permanent. PCars will raise the bar for true fans of sim racing and set a new standard for graphics, physics and immersion. PD has their work cut out for them.

Yeah I think you are right. The game doesn't live up to expectations. But I'm not sure they can put up the good fight. Not real sure they really care any more.

About the first thing, nowadays there is more competition than yesterday in the PS2 years, no matter how good the new GT's will be, its hard to match old GT's sales anyway.

2nd thing, PCars is a PC/PS4/XO game, I've said many times and I say it again, dont compare a PC game (or next gen console game) with a PS3 game, its complete non-sense, obviously.
You can only compare the GT7 for PS4 and PCars for PS4 as they will run on the same platform. Then we will see which game will raise the bar. I dont think PCars will be that spectacular, dont get your hype too high

As for point 1, GT had no trouble matching old GT sales right up to last December. Please enlighten us with all the competition they face now on the PS3 that they didn't face on PS1-2.

As for point 2, I didn't compare PCars with GT6/PS3, I was clearly talking about PS4/nextgen so your point isn't a point at all. If you've been following PCars and know the sim market you should already know that PCars is groundbreaking, bringing a true racing sim to console gaming, there's no debate about this. It is a sim from the ground up with a level of customization for the player that previously only existed in PC games.

Point 1: We are not talking about GT5 but GT6. Almost 4 years difference. In those years, PCars is emerging, so is Assetto Corsa to give two examples, and PC gaming has became much more popular, thanks to platforms like Steam. Not GT, but the consoles in general have more competition.

Point 2: You havent played PCars and you have not seen GT7, yet you say PCars will be groundbreaking compared to the rest. Bold assumptions much?

So PCars (unreleased) and Assetto Corsa (early access/partial game/different platform) are your examples of competition for GT6? Seriously?

No assumptions on PCars, it also broke new ground for how open the game development was from the very beginning so there is easy access to nearly every aspect of the game and direct access to the team members who have beta tested this entire game from the beginning. Are you not aware of this?

1: Yes, and PC/Steam. I'm saying that PC is gaining ground on consoles and less people buy a console game like GT6.

2: Open game development? You mean a bunch of amateurs can do better than a team of professionals? Community assisted, open, sounds nice, but that doesnt mean it will have better results than normal games developed by a professional studio.

I have only been a GTplanet member for a few months and admit to not having read everthing, but from what I gather to be a common issue is individuality. Things like livery editor, making own championships, being able to alter cars in various ways, all these I feel would make people come back for more. To go online and show a livery you crearted, to race friends in a self made champioship, on or offline, would bring a form of uniqueness every time you play and be a game less linear.
Having 1000+ vehicles is one thing but only having two or three races to use a particular car in career mode seems daft.
If PD brought into the game just a few of these items it could make GT a much more enjoyable experience and yes if done properly a great game.
This is not the answer to make GT6 better but it would definately help.

I have to assume the first part is a joke. PCars is not released, AC is early access to an unfinished game and Steam has a few 1-8 year old sims available, that are years behind graphically and very narrow in scope. Must be a joke to think they would have any significant effect on console games.

PCars is being developed by a professional studio, the early access members helped fund the game and provide ongoing specific feedback during the development process. In other words they immediately put any changes to the test and provide instant feedback to help avoid the myridad if mistakes, inconsistencies, bugs and glitches that are inherent in GT6 and seem to pop up with every update. If you aren't excited or even intrigued by this you need to shake the PD cobwebs out of your head. The potential for this is mind boggling for any true sim racing fan.

You are too overhyped about pcars and the "community assisting" gimmick. Its another way of saying "we have non-professional betatesters working for free, therefore we save money".
I dont see this mindboggling potential anywhere.
The GT6 bugs are PD's fault and not very normal. Usually games dont have those many bugs and no need for an army of betatesters.

That's quite a cynical viewpoint. I choose to be more optimistic about the possibilities of this and all my interactions with PCars members on GTP have been honest, professional, and courteous. I'm fairly certain if PD took the same approach for GT7 and recruited a few thousand GTP members for ongoing testing before release, you'd have a completely different point of view.

Pd should have proper professional betatesters to do the job properly as is seems their current ones are useless...

What i dont get is why pcars sells the "community assistance" as an awesome thing when its basically replacing employees with non-professional comunity members.

If only Kaz could read and understand this :-(

I will attempt to help you get this ;-) Basically, they (the current beta testers PD uses) are apparently incapable of testing the online aspects of the game properly. With every update that PD has released with this game we (the community) have been posting about bugs and problems here on this very forum within hours of download. I know I have ;-)

So basically results speak for themselves, we (the community here) actually do a better job *for free* than the paid for, so called professional testers.

Also, what a really nice concept too, a game studio that would actually listen to the genuine complaints from its players and then promptly utilise that feedback to improve and refine their game a little more. What a wonderful win/win situation. The studio gets a better product for free and the players get a better game to play. So my question now would be "why wouldn't every studio do this?"

As a footnote, I have been following the progress of Pcars and have pre-ordered it. It only has to be half as good as it looks like it will be to be twice as good as what GT6 is ;-) I personally place a very high value on community input.
