Shift 2: DS3 Handling

I'm a dpad (steer), face button (accelerate, brake) and shoulder (gears) user.

Can anybody assists me because I, for the life of me, can not find the right setting for a fluid experience? At the moment steering is either on or off i.e. the car always jerks left to right etc...

i'm the same and don't think there is any way to use it without it being all or nothing. poor use of the controls abilities means you have to use the toggles and r2/l2.

I'm afraid that in this day and age there's just no excuse for using anything other than sticks and triggers for steering and gas/brake, assuming one doesn't have a wheel of course.

I've been a need for speed fan since day one. It's nice to see, how game changed over time.
I'm currently playing shift2 and I never been more frustrated playing racing game than shift series.
My biggest problem with this game, he's the physics:scared:, and more particularly the part when two cars collided.
When that happens it seems like the cars have no weight:grumpy:, and tend to drug opponents car into a violent spin out regardless of speed. It's specially getting annoying when it's minor accident. Such behavior should be immediately addressed by the developer. It's nearly impossible to play online.👎
Thank you for your time, and hope to see patch for that matter in the near future.

If the developer is going to offer the buttons as a possible control configuration, then it should adjust them so they are actually usable. Personally I'm not comfortable using L1/R1 as gear changes nor the right analogue stick, so I'm usually forced to use automatic if the developer doesn't make the Cross button an effective throttle.
GT manages to make the Cross button nice and analogue, why can't other developers? I have no problem using triggers for throttle/brake, its just the gear changes that are not comfortable for me.

As for using the d-pad for steering, I have to say you are going struggle on a lot of racing games these days using that!

Agreed, best settings so far on DS3. Finally, i can really enjoy the game with both my DS3 and DFGT.

So that same setting also works with a DFGT.

I used JJ's settings from his thread "How Shift 2 really drives.."

FF - 100
SD - 1
SS - 100
Throttle DZ - 1
Throttle Sensitivity - 50
Brake 1 - 1
Brake - 50
Clutch - didn't matter so i think i left them at 0 from what i remember
Speed Sensitivity - 0
Steering lock - 900

adjust car steering lock in tuning settings between 28-32. all my cars are at 30 and its WAY easier to drive the cars. this is all on elite mode with ABS, TC low, Stability.

well excuse us who have been playing since d-pad only and don't spend all day playing to get use to it. appears this game won't be getting as much play time as i thought it would with the lack of support for the d-pad.

The original DS controller was released in 1998. Is thirteen years not time enough to get acquainted? For the record, I've been gaming since before the d-pad came along, so that's not much of an excuse either.

Rarely does a racing game get released that feels so plain wrong out of the box. I had this game on release day and had it re-packaged for return the same day. I tried all possible controller adjustments but to no avail. Absolute pants! All those people who dis' GT5 should be forced to play Shift 2 for a day...that should shut them up.

I just set the standard controller settings with steering sensitivity and deadzone down to zero. Played it on Elite with assists and it felt a bit more enjoyable.

where can you change these settings. I am over-compensating a lot and its hard to keep a striaght line. there seems to ba a lag in the DS3 which is probably why I over-compensate anyone else having the same issue?

Options, controls and then toggle between R1 and L1 to go to the advance settings from the control bindings or w/e they're called. I currently use Terronium (renown tuning) settings and they work great for me now.

Copy, thanks!

Being a race-car driver myself i feel that shift 2 is no where close to the real deal. The handling of the cars is ridiculous. A race car at high speeds feels planted and stable. NFS is all over the place. Its neither a good arcade racer nor a race simulation. Its nothing really. Flashy graphics and great cars dont make up for to many huge flaws. Very disappointing game.

been playing games since 1983 either with a joystick then pads. No i have better things to do than sit and practice how to us the sticks when the control offered by sony still has the pad and works great with GT. Had i known that was a problem i would have passed on the game, if sony wants to remove the pad then I'll pass on their next system. If the control offers the pad make it useable.

As for Shift having terrible D-pad handling, you've got a valid point. However, it boggles the mind (at least mine anyway) that you're still eating hamburger after 13 years of filet mignon staring you down.

You still listen to music with an eight-track?

Unless there is no alternative, there is simply no reason to use a D-pad in this day and age. And: yes, I'm also a genuine oldschool gamer, but I don't see any valid reasons to get stuck in an inferior paradigm of the past.

I have a G25 wheel setup, but I don't pull it out very often. It's a PITA to set up in my gaming area, so I play most of the time with the DS3.

I'm 45% through S2U without connecting the wheel. I normally will wait for a weekend when I have nothing to do, and I'll set it up and play for a couple of days straight to get my wheel fix in....:embarrassed:

Nothing wrong with a DS3 (I play with a pad: HKS Racing Controller), but insisting on using the D-PAD is a bit silly unless you're playing on a Gameboy. A steering wheel can not be replaced with an on-off switch :)

You know you can map the turning controls to the D-Pad.
At least Im pretty sure.

I was in there when I first got the game and I immediately changed to both steering and throttle with sticks. Its so nonsenses for me that triggers have replaced sticks. Sticks are good because if there is one thing that I have been taught about race cars is that you never carry or ride the brakes through the corner, and you brake in a straight line as much as you can, as well as carrying the throttle at just the right amount of revs to keep it on the power. and I find that whenever I have to use triggers I ride the brake like a kid riding a bike.

Also it took me so long to switch from X and Square, that I really got used to it. It was V8 Supercars 3 (I think it was TOCA in the UK) that made me do it.

I switched to analog stick steering and r2/l2 throttle/brakes in GT4. But then I switched back to X & square in GT5, because that worked better for me, for some reason. Now in S2U, I'm back to analog steering and r2/l2, because X & square just weren't working at all.

I intend to stick to this configuration. The only problem is that I much prefer manual gears, but I'm using automatic until I get completely comfortable with this control configuration, then I'll go back to manual.

Do most use r1/l1 manual shifting with this configuration?

This is the other problem with triggers. How to control the gears. It feels so unnatural to have two fingers on the buttons. Maybe its the size of my hands but it feels like I wrap the controller too much

I hold the DS3 and 360 controller with four fingers up top. I never did before I owned a 360, but since then have. After maybe a week of getting used to it I find it feels more natural to hold that way, more comfortable too!

Here is how I config for manual in any game that lets me change the buttons.
Put gear changing on [] & X (X & A) and leave L1/R1 (LB/RB) for views/look back.

I'm more comfortable with only two fingers up top on L2/R2, so I'm thinking the [] & X gear changing may work better for me. So, [] = upshift and X = downshift, or vice versa?

Square and Triangle work well for shifting using larger hands. However, for the amount of time I spend w/ a controller in my hand, using the right analog to shift is a must. Thumb fatigue is a real problem for me when using the buttons to shift. Big hands. Yeah, life's rough...
