Shift Patch 1.02 Review

Tier 5 as in Maserati MC12 or the reward cars like the Aston DBR9 - available only for quick race, but I don't care for the career anyway ;)

It's almost a bit too easy to drive now in my opinion, the challenge to tame ones lead foot is far less.

I've played almost every console racing game there is, and I've conquered them all.
I thought for sure I'd know how to drive a car in a video game by now. :dunce:

I guess all those years of Pole Position didn't pay off. :(

The new patch sucks! My hole save file is gone. I just wanted to take some tier 3 cars on ring, but no i had only tier 1

Ah, now THAT was an epic game, but I was more of a Pit Stop guy ;)

I found that all of a sudden the McLaren F1 is my most favourite car in the game after the patch, and the Porsche GT2 is loads of fun, too.

The AI seems to have been considerably improved once you have cleared the pack, so there's some nice racing in the game after all.

Unfortunately on some occasions, I get terrible frame rate issues on tracks that didn't have them before (Brands Hatch for example).

Well, on the 360 I could always clear the cache and play the game in the pre patch version, maybe I do that to compare when I'm done with the higher HP cars.

Yeah, the McLaren is a lot of fun now. I love it at Silverstone especially.

I have framerate problems on all tracks if there are more than eight cars. It's ridiculous... Alone or with only a few opponents the game is superb. Predictable, immersive and the physics feel accurate. Add a few more cars and things completely fall apart. Unbelievable...

I've had some small framerate problems after the second patch, but no way as bad as before the patch. It is when you have a full grid of cars, that's when the framerate problem starts.
Playing on-line over this last week and I've had no framerate problems playing on-line. It has been great racing some good fast guys (no rammers or crashers) just hard clean racing.
The new muscle cars are "Beasts" to hang on to around the fast tracks, love them.

As far as the tuning of the car goes, you have to have two sets of cars. One tuned for off-line and cars tuned for on-line. You can tune your cars so sweet off-line but that tune does not transfer to on-line play, so there is still a problem with the tuning as far as I can see.

A new problem on-line that I've had, when I have hosted a ranked room and quit out of on-line play, go back to main menu and then quit the game. The black screen with (please wait) comes up, then the PS3 gives two beeps, shuts down and restarts it self.
Is any other PS3 gamer having the same problem?

Over all I'm loving the game again.

I spent some time over the Thanksgiving holiday playing the game again after the patch. The bouncing problem was greatly reduced but it still occurred to some degree on some cars that I works upgraded however I did not tune them. The physics were more predictable overall but there were still some areas on specific tracks where Newton's laws did not apply.

I was able to do a lot better and win some of the manufacturer's challenges that I was having troubles on. After that I decided to do the championship races that I did not try before because of the handling issues. The problem I found was that in the process of fixing the bouncing problems and other issues the game was now made too easy. I won all of the championship races except for one where I went of track on the last lap and couldn't recover in time for the win. I didn't just win the races but won them easily often taking the lead within the first lap or two and finding myself racing with open track in front of me for the most of the race and finishing in some cases over 30 seconds ahead. I like to think of myself as an above average racer but I'm not that good.

A big problem that was particularly evident was the framerate problems in all of the championship races which is probably due to the full fields. A couple of the races had periods where it was pretty ugly including the final championship race.

Technically things were better in on-line as the game was equally easy for all and the framerate problems seemed less evident. Unfortunately most of the time the fields in on-line had too many punters and crashers to be enjoyable. There should be a "precision" race mode that can be selected by the host of an on-line race that would establish collision penalties as well as letting all know what type of racers should join. It is also too easy to leave a game in mid race. It seems like half of the field leaves the game prior to completion and perhaps there should be some sort of wait time before allowing participation in a new on-line race to discourage this.

On the positive side during the downtime with this game I started to try Ferrari Challenge again. I had put this title aside a couple of times because of the difficulties I had with the game but after reading about the best wheel setup parameters and everyones good opinion of the game I decided to give it another try. After spending a lot of time with it I am now getting the hang of it and this is my game right now (at least until the 17th).

I don't like the patch at all, I can't controll my cars anymore and I hate patches in general... everytime a game gets patched it gets worse for me, I guess I just have to live with it since i want to play and compete online, but however, had I known this I'd never bought Shift in the first place (I always rent games before buying, to see if I like it)... so another wasted 60 bucks. Check.

Still waiting for the patch to be released on Steam (EA/Valve are telling us maybe next week, it's absolutely unacceptable!) anyway, have the game on the PS3 as well and well to be honest I've noticed no real change (other then that bug with the grass coming out the tarmac at the beginning of some races is fixed). Even so, still really enjoying the game and love the cockpit cam..even people who despise Shift in general admit the cockpit cam is good, quite an achievement there 👍

does anyone know if there will be another patch coming soon to fix the bugs people still are experiencing on ps3?

I've put off buying this game until it is "driveable", maybe I should state that I've only played the demo they put on the ps store. But that demo was so horrible that I decided to skip this title, but if they are getting to terms with the bugs, maybe it'll be worth buying it?

Just from what the last patch did and the rumourmill, I would bet that we are headed for another patch and a Ferrari DLC fairly soon.

The EA representave from Vancouver who had been very much present in these forums (can't remember his exact name ... something "blade") prior to the patch has been conspicuously absent from any further communication. We've never heard from him since, and I personally don't think we ever will. The patch they issued didn't come close to fixing the things that he stated would be fixed. My guess is that they gave it their best shot but the few bandaids they applied failed to stop the massive hemorrhaging :)

Like a fool, I listened to the Shift fan boys here who claimed great things about the patch and game and I actually went back and repurchased the game :ouch: Much to my disappointment, the game still had framerate issues, ridiculous handling quirks and the inability to maintain a car's set up from offline to online play. Granted, the ridiculous bouncing effect was largely reduced but only by dumbing down the feel of the cars in general. Still far and away the worst racing game ever released in my opinion.

I doubt there will be another patch. By his own admission, it cost them a lot of money to implement a patch and doing so for a lost cause is not something they are likely to do again :nervous:

Oh yes ... I am using a PS3.

The cars in the game are more than driveable now, using the proper tuning settings which you can find on this forum. It's just that some upper level Career Races have framerate problems.

I certainly hope you're right boxox. The only thing really irritating me about the game now is the slowdowns in the upper tier races. If they fix that, I can put up with the other eccentricities of the game.
The Ferrari's would be great too! 👍

If not it's a matter of time before they end up on the PC anyhow, in the last week a couple of giant steps have been made to do with modding cars - the visual damage system noone could figure out has been disabled successfully, new car slots have been created, and people have figured out how to import cars while replicating the existing materials system.

But, nonetheless, sometime between 1.01 and 1.02 someone at SMS spent a hell of a lot of time tweaking the physics data for the Ferarris. And there was someone showing an email from EA Sweden saying that there would be a DLC containing those cars and a new physics mode in January. Naturally just to **** on things an EA Canada rep then disavowed any knowledge of it :)

Re the slowdowns at higher tiers, there is absolutely nothing in the data files that I can see that would cause this to happen. The only thing I can think it might be is that there are optimisation issues for it on console systems where once the cars start shifting much more power more rapidly the physics/physx system gets overloaded at the tickrate (basically 'the speed at which things happen') they've used for those parameters.

ok, thanks for the replies;)

I think I will wait a little bit longer before I buy it though (a new patch or a price drop), and who knows, GT5 could be right around the corner;)

If you shop around you can find the PC version for about $15-20 now, and it's probably the best and most configurable version of the game anyhow. Online is a bit more dicey for cheaters/griefers though, and it has a very low tolerance for any driver/os settings it doesn't like.

Oh, maybe I should have mentioned I'm only intrested in the ps3 version.

I'm one of those weird guys that refuse to play "computer games",
My PC is optimized for music production, for instance, the graphics card is outdated and worthless, it's the only original part left in it since purchase 2002.

Anyway, I appreciate your input, thank you;)
