Should failing football clubs go bust?

They did. The SPL had a megabucks deal with Setanta (not that big compared to the Sky/EPL but still a big deal) and then they went bust leaving loads of clubs with big debts. I believe the only SPL club not in the red is Motherwell.

The entire English football league suffered the same problem with the infamous ITV Digital. Wrexham, Darlington, Wimbledon, Bradford, Leicester, Port Vale, Derby, Ipswich, QPR and Hull all entered administration sometime between 2001-2004, based on ITV Digital's collapse in 2002.

SPL is gash anyway. Should just horse the lot and get the S4 PE lesson from Buckie High School on TV. Nobody would be able to tell the difference...

But yeah I agree with daan, if they are going to give them a points penalty then at least make it one that counts for something.

Manchester United had a debt of 826 million euro last year. (2011) And the money coming in was 349,8 million euro.

That can't go good for to long.

Glaziers bought the club using 500 million (pounds) of borrowed money. Never mind going wrong, in terms of debt it's completely unsustainable, not getting past the Champions League group stages means a significant loss of income too, not looking good.

United's debt is around 300 million, down from 380 last year. Nowhere near the 826 Million Euro someone quoted above. As the annual turnover increases year on year, that could be paid off in 4 years.

Yeah but man utd's debt will never be called upon. The tax case with rangers is basically a test run. After the case all clubs in britian will be under investigation, and probably the richest ones first. There was talk of some kind of money restriction for european tournaments anyway, I think it was to do with players wages - if they were higher than x then they couldnt play or something like that. I hope some cash restrictions go through to make it more open.
Lets behonest here, the money in football is ridiculous and thats from a proper football fan.

I dont think rangers will fold anyway for the reasons above, too big a club with so much history, and the SPL would only get worse being a one team league. TV rights would be worth less and less each season with no old firm.

The reason why United's debt will never be called on is because it's sustainable debt for the club. They club have paid off 300 million in debt over the past 4 years which is due to the club strict policy on a 50% costs to profit margin.

With the share issue, the club is hoping to remove the rest of the bond debt.

How ever those suggesting complete fan ownership, should take a look at the mounting issues at Barcelona. Their success currently papers over massive cracks in their financial viability. Increasing yearly debt to the level of Chelsea is not something that just goes away. Especially in such an economically unstable country. Most of this of course is down to mis-management brought on by the pressure of fan ownership. The constant dick measure contest in the transfer window with Madrid, creates massive strain on their annual expenditure. Especially when they don't have the security that the city of madrid offers Real '400 million for their training ground etc' or the marketability.

Madrid have similar issues but get over it through their global appeal much like United.

A mate put it like this. Take Messi out of Barcelona and they go back to being just Barcelona. I mean you talk to the average barca 'fan', and they have no idea the impact that Iniesta and Xavi have on that side. Ronaldo was taken out of United and they still grew financially 'look at the 10 million a season training kit sponsorship with DHL for example' and if you were to take him out of Madrid, nothing would change financially for them. They'd just find another shiny player to fill the void.

Just when you think things can't get worse for Rangers...

Not exactly unexpected that investors are not interested in ranger. The whole Scottish league is down the toilet. There is nothing to be made in investing in Rangers. They'll never win the CL, and it's a competition between themselves and Celtic each year.

Most would rather invest in a championship side and try and make a name for themselves that way.

That link had been updated since I posted it, It was actually saying he was interested in Rangers and had contacted the administrators.
