Should tax payers buy ANY Monachy gifts?

The Queen pays tax on her income salary. She contributes to any taxfunded scheme as much as you and I do.
Ultimately, in theory, everything belongs to the crown. Everything is hers anyway.

So it doesn't matter either way. What I am worried about is the grinding halt the economy will have to endure over the public holidays. Sure, tourists will throw money away but how much did we lose on last year's wedding? One billion, I think was quoted? Spread that over 2-3 days of official celebration and that's more woe for our hard up national product.

In the UK we're expected to 'buy' our Queen a yacht...

No we aren't.

Michael Gove MP suggested a replacement for Britannia as part of Diamond Jubilee celebrations. It was rejected on the grounds that we have more pressing matters and more urgent things to spend money on than a yacht.

How does that become "we're expected to buy our Queen a yacht"?

Because the disgusting Tories will make us, as they sit there in their palatial mansions baling out the bankers while smashing the elderly and vulnerable and NHS. Britons know your place! Cameron is acting like a gang leader, defeated in the House of Lords, but just going to ignore that....then what's the point of having a vote? Spat your dummy out Camerface? Too busy killing people in the middle east? Got nothing better to do than rape the world of all its minerals?

They make you sick! "We're all in this together" I think not!!!

We've got Cameron simply because Labour shot themselves in the foot. Then the face. Then the other foot. Then the face again just to be sure.

You can't blame people for being fed up of Labour being degenerates.

I think you're angling towards a seperate issue, whereas Famine, and to a much lesser extent, myself, have already answered the OP. I mean, it started out as a monarchy topic, and has quicklu descended to a rant about the Government, and not the Crown.

I am no expert, but this guy's perspective is interesting. I suspect it may be inaccurate, but maybe you guys can confirm.

But aren't they both one and the same??? Cameron is the 5th cousin to the Queen....I rest my case!

We're all related in one way or another. Just because Cameron isn't as far removed as we are, doesn't mean he's in the Queen's pocket. I can't really see the point trying to be made. She is not a part of our day-to-day politics.

And maybe Cameron is, and I do think he is, an out-of-touch toff, but I don't think the Queen has a particular interest in watching us suffer. Not that she can do anything about it.

She can sit on it, that's just wrong.

...so you didn't read Famine's post then, I take it.

I don't see the point of ranting about the tories either. It's not like labour is any better, and the lib dems are hardly a model of perfection either.

Choosing a political party in the UK is like choosing whether you'd like your todger skinned, stabbed or grated. You basically pick whichever one you think is going to be least awful.

Precisely. I've always classed myself as being politically independent because party politics are really the lesser of several, several evils. It's like taking death by strychnine over cyanide or arsenic.

Perhaps we should start up a UK Politics Thread for the purposes of OmniusGT's frustrations..

'kay. So they rejected the idea and that means they'll buy a yacht?

The... wait, what?

as they sit there in their palatial mansions baling out the bankers

Yeah, I know. That half trillion pound bailout they gave to the banks 18 months before they were even elected, those sinister, time-travelling bastards.

Are we going to give facts even a cursory glance, or are we just rabidly anti-one-party ranting?

I do believe we have a Labour supporter.

Going by that logic, if it was Labour in charge, a new Royal Yacht would probably be the best thing ever.

@Famine, bravo! Sinister time-travelling bastards indeed!

Same thing, surely.

[being generous] Since 1997 at any rate... [/being generous]

Well over the last few days the UK's £trillion debt has been splashed over most news outlets. For anyone to even consider approving public funding for a multi million pound yacht for an already wealthy family is just plain wrong.

Wasn't Cameron saying a while back (Paraphrase) "We don't have any money. We can't keep teachers in schools. That sucks, but we really have no money."

That doesn't sound like someone who wants to blow money on a Yacht.

Also, it may create additional jobs for a bit. Our Liberal party would love that.

We're not buying a yacht.

Nah, just a Daily Mail reader.

We're already building a royal yacht anyway, it's even called HMS Queen Elizabeth II. It was supposed to be a warship but it's pretty much just a giant sun deck under current plans.
