Side View Mirrors, anyone?

I host a room (“Street Legal – Aids OK”) every night. I usually run 400pp – 450pp races. The room is always filled with great drivers and the lower PP races make for lots of intense side by side racing.

I like the races to be as clean as possible but the lack of any useful side mirrors can make this very difficult. It would be so nice to know exactly that other car is especially in a tight situation like going side by side into the twisties at Eiger.

I was visiting some web site the other day that had lots of pictures of peoples’ driving setups. I didn’t recognize many of the racing games, but I did notice some of them had useful side view mirrors while in the bumper cam view. I’m sure by now most everyone uses a wide screen display. There is plenty of room to accommodate some side view mirrors.

I read in one of the forums that PD actually pays attention to the gtplanet feedback section. I have posted an idea there. Please go and vote for “Side View Mirrors”. Type “mirrors” into the search box to find my idea.

I race with chrunch every night, and I use the bumper view also, can't count how many times I've had to apologize for slamming into someone because i had no idea they were beside me. PLEASE add side mirrors for the bumper view. Yea, they have them in cockpit view, but that is the only view that has it. I've been using bumper view since 1999 when I started on the wonderful GT ride.

I keep trying to knock mine off at places like Monaco and Madrid. Stage .5 weight reduction.

Mapping and using left/right view can do wonders for your "problem".

I use a g25 wheel and have the 2 wheel thumb buttons mapped to look left/right. I sometimes get startled when I push the button and a car is right there.
Also you take your eyes off the when you do that.

On games like RFactor, you realise how useful it is to just have the mirrors there, especially as you are wrestling the wheel or round a turn, you don't have to completely remove your vision from ahead, even for a tenth of a second.

Set the map so it is zoomed in. This will allow you to see where the cars are all around your car. Helps me a lot online.

I did that tonight and actually liked it. Had it set locked to car and zoomed to 2.
It was kind of like a radar.

I do host though and tonight some jackwad decided to start driving the wrong way. I don't use mics, so I didn't know about it until he hit me head on.
That is rare, but it does happen from time to time. I normaly spot it, hop out, and kick them before they can cause too much carnage.

This guy so needs them. I'm tired of hearing him say sorry.

In all seriousness, I'm in agreement with Chrunch. Far too often I'm taken out by someone that didn't know I was right beside them. I keep an eye on my rearview mirror to see who's closing in on my bump so, why wouldn't I use side view mirrors?

Am I the only one that can "feel" where others are, without mirrors?

Yeah, there is a little bit of 'feel' involved as well. When you've been racing with someone and now they're not in your rear view and not in front of you, you should assume they're beside you.

The game you're talking about is rFactor, and yes it would be a great thing to incorporate into the game both in bumper cam and as an option in all other views.

Many cars have great mirrors in cockpit view, but in some they are obstructed, out of the field of view or simply replaced by cameras (Infiniti Coupé Concept). Sideview mirrors in bumper view sounds like a nice thing, and not too hard to implement either.

Yeah and some of the side mirrors show what looks like 8 bit reflections!

I need full map to see how the grid is spread and how much I am going to have to push to gain on the cars ahead.

Mirrors also work for when the cars are quite a long way behind, you can keep an eye on what is happening with other racer's battles without distracting from your race.

And I will never race in third person, due to the little benefit and how awkward it feels to drive on the wheel.

I think GT5 was designed as a 3D game and mirrors in cockpit view are working fine in 3D mode instead of 2D mode. And overall graphics and feelings in 3D mode make GT5 just another game. Try it in 3D!

Thats buying a €1000 buck TV to enjoy cockpit view? Not a good idea in my eye's.

Hate to break your bubble but not all us are able to afford a 3D TV.

Something I notice is how left and right view works. In GT, it's as if the driver looks 90 degrees in either direction. Well, you have to know if someone's approaching, not when said person is already there.

Playing Shift 2 the other night, one thing that caught my eye was how look left or right was implemented. The driver just looks to the side mirrors, but it retains the general sight of the road ahead. Very useful for quick glances at the mirrors.

That is considered when using cockpit view. I don't use bumper view, but I guess the problem is somewhat the same.

The map solution is a good one for clean racing. You can check your surroundings quickly, without distracting yourself. Best solution available ATM, IMO. But shift's idea could be very useful.

i love gt5

Guys you know there are 3D Monitors much less expensive than 3DTv's.

Its not like 100 bucks right? I won"t give out more then 20 bucks to enjoy a 50 buck game, better buy Shift or Dirt for 20 bucks.

I see your point. Anyway when one day you will try GT5 in 3D you won't be disappointed! Sooner or later :)

Already tried at a friends house, first 5 mins "AMAZING" after 5 mins " My head hurts". Happens to my always even in a cinema.
