Update 1/23/15
So to start off, I got a ton of parts for the car. In short, my dad knows some people in the movie business. More specifically people that did the cars for the new Fantastic Four movie. They used some '88 S/C MR2s and at the end of the production they have to crush the cars. Once they were done with the cars, they called us to come grab the parts off of two of the cars and allowed us to take one home and completely strip it. In the end all of the parts fill a storage unit all the way to the top. Here are some of the pictures from that process:
Then the car started having charging issues. They first became apparent when the battery died and left me on the side of the interstate. I decided to set the week that I was off for new years aside for replacing the alternator. The alternator is located Between the distributor and a/c compressor, up against the firewall. Either the distributor or a/c compressor has to be removed, both are no fun. I chose to remove the compressor and pull it out the bottom. Loosening the idler pulley was where we hit the first hiccup. It was put on with an impact while the engine was out and is now it a very difficult place. A regular socket wouldn't fit and the extremely shallow socket was stripping it. We ended up removing the top engine mount and torquing the engine to use a reverse thread extractor to get it off. It took about 7-8 hours to get the belt off and start removing the compressor. To get it off I had to remove an oil line going to the oil pan, so I decided to completely drain the oil and change it. I was able to move the compressor out of the way enough that I didn't have to disconnect the lines from it. The rest of the process went pretty smoothly. While she was up on stands I got spacers for the front to fit the grey Motegi rims. Got her all buttoned up saturday around noon. Luckily Cars & Coffee was moved to sunday because of rain.
Sunday morning started off fine, car was running good, weather was great. Then, about halfway to C&C I noticed the volt meter start dropping. I called my friend, who was taking his truck there, and let him know it might die. Sure enough she starts sputtering about 2 mile from the meet. We pulled over and let her charge for about 5 min. While we were there I tightened the belt to see if that would help, but it didn't. Had to stop and let her charge on the way home also. Next I went after the voltage regulator, which is in the trunk of my car. Sure enough, a small black box in the trunk of my car was the problem.
I got bored last weekend and remembered having the intercooler heat soaking at the last autocross, so I decided I would use a spare windshield washer bottle and pump to spray the intercooler. It would have been too easy to install one that uses a switch in the cabin, so have it hooked up to a wire that only goes hot when the S/C kicks in. Fairly simple to do because the relay is located in the trunk, right below the where the bottle is located. $5 for the garden mister (pack of like 10 and a stake) and one evening and it was installed. Im still testing it to make sure it's spraying when it needs to, but it appears to be working.
In the process of moving, my dad took a break and rode both of our bikes around the neighborhood. This time of the year is about as cold as it gets for Louisiana. Cold tires/street and a gravel patch didn't mix very well. He low sided at 5-10mph. He walked away with a bruised hip. Could have been alot worse. The front shock guard and hand guards got scratched. We both decided the shock guard didn't need to be replaced and he told me to find a set of hand guards I like and he would get them. At first I was looking for a set with integrated turn signals when I came across the Acerbis Vision handguards. Ordered them and they came in alot faster than expected. I wired them in to come on when the key is on. Let me just say they are very bright! I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a set. Sadly I don't have a picture of them on my bike.
Ouch. Hope the rider was okay.
Yes, he walked away with a bruised hip.
