So How Real Is Tuning?

One thing I keep wondering about this game and others with tuning ability is just how realistic are they? Can you really go out and buy turbo kits or do engine overhauls? Would a simple titanium exhaust add more HP? Or a racing air filter? Can you really go out and get a 10000 junker and supe it up with another 50000 popped into it? You get the idea. I am not a car guy so unsure about this aspect of these games.

In some ways the tuning in the game is quite realistic, in others it is not.

Without going into too much detail, in today's market, there's tons of bolt-on aftermarket parts available for all sorts of different cars. The effectiveness of said parts varies widely for all sorts of reasons, but they're out there.

A person that knows what they're doing could also do custom work to modify everything from engine to exhaust to the chassis itself to improve performance.

In order to make it work in a game, the developers have simplified it (a lot) and made (mostly) the same upgrade options available for every car. What varies is the performance gains from the upgrades. How they came up with actual values and how to model the altered physics I'm not entirely sure. What I do know is the people at Polyphony Digital who are involved in modeling the cars are car nuts who spend a hell of a lot of time researching the cars and upgrades they put into the game. Hell they've even contributed to the design of a number of road and track cars.

Hope this helps.

not very

yes

Or a racing air filter?

possibly

yes, with enough money you CAN polish a turd. just ask the civic guys.

If you think about it, import tuners aren't doing anything different than teenagers in the fifties were doing - taking a car they can afford and trying to make it go faster. Problem is, there are a few who are more concerned with the look/lifestyle than actually trying to build a car (Vinyl adds Horsepower dood!). A giant chicken wing on the back of an Accord with a K/M air filter and MSD ignition probably isn't very functional. But you can take a Civic, swap in a B-series motor, put on some forced induction, gut some weight, and do some other work and you'll have a fun car with some serious HP.

In my limited experience though, GT is pretty good when it comes to HP gain. The 2 big enemies of a car are gravity and friction - do things to limit those (increase airflow, lighten the weight, reduce moving parts, etc) the car will become faster. GT does a decent job of addressing these.

Bolt ons will increase horsepower but not as much as some good internal work. Obviously, GT simplifies this process - I doubt most people would want to shop individually through multiple kinds of pistons, camshafts, carbs, valves, etc.

Well, I would... :D

What actually makes me wonder a little bit is wondering how closely some of the suspension settings correlate to real life. Too bad I don't have enough springs and track time to find out. ;)

This.

Budget would prolly be a big thing too. Think its pretty safe to assume that "Let's see how fast we can take this corner." would have two very different results when you compare reality to GT5!

obviously stuff like suspension settings is alot more involved in real life.

A lot more involved in real life yes, but GT5 does do a good job of realistically changing the handling characteristics of a car when you make a certain change to spring rate, damping, camber, toe, etc. For example, if you were trying to eliminate understeer you might stiffen the rear springs. Works both in GT5 and the real world...
