So ive decided to buy a cockpit this year.

Okay with the crazy fast times going down this year in GT academy, its obvious to me that my setup is not working as well as I would like. I decided i am going to drop the money and go for a full cockpit this fall, and I was wondering what the community thought the best was/ Most comfortable?

Price range would be 400-700 ish.

In addition I was wondering what the really fast guys were using?

Thanks
Stephen

I made the finals last year, and am still using a modified $15 laptop table and a $20 fold-able chair from Wal-Mart.

here's my problems
: A: the angle of my pedals is so high that i have to keep my feet really raised up, and that starts to really hurt my hips and ankles after a while.

B: I use an office chair as my seat/ My fiancee and I live in a one bedroom, so my table setup serves as a cockpit, kitchen table, office for school ( all online), and just general use. Unless i get a cockpit there is not many ways to change it.

C. To keep everything in line i have to push off my stand with my heels, and this transfers into back pain.

D. Just not comfortable enough for long sessions. I cant do more than an hour/ hour and a half before my joints start locking up.

i think cockpit is more of an immersion technique:P I even change my driving position depending on whether i drive a formula or a gt car:D (i use playseat)

i'm .8 off the top time using a DFGT attached to one of these:

it's not really about the setup.

Why does a thread about someone wanting to be comfortable always turns into epeen contest about who plays upside down while being waterboarded.

haha thanks for saying what i was thinking, the second time one of my threads about improved comfort over time has been construed as me trying to find magic time...

The people who are way up there have been doing so many hours a day, personally i am only able to do about 1 - 1.5. I have a hip issue, especially my left hip, and it really starts to get aggravated after a session.

I could rebuild my pedal stand to flatten out the angle, but I used furniture grade wood glue in all the joints, So I will never be able to get the pedal backing board off without running the whole stand.

i would suggest getting a regular comfy seat and a wheel stand for more flexibility. That's definitely what i find lacking in playseat. You can't be comfy in the same position all the time. Sometimes your body needs to change things up.
My PC chair is a very comfy 70 bucks chair from Staples. The only issue is that i cant use it because it has wheels and hence moves all around. So you need to find either something without wheels or something that won't need wheels(in the chair i have, and i assume a lot of other chairs would have this problem too, the center 'pole' goes through the 'star' 'foundation' to a level that's lower then the 'star's' edges. Ugh i hope that makes sense:D)

The PVC DIY rigs on here look good for function.

Buying one built. I would avoid anything with a center bar.

The OMEGA and OBUNTU stand out to me on the cockpit market. Both would be a win and pretty sure the price is in the ball park with a Playseat.

Also building your own can allow you to use a true passenger seat. Beings no g's applied no need for a race seat. Going with a real car seat will allow maximum comfort. Which will allow more focus. This was largely why I built my own. Having the means influenced it too obviously.

Veloci_2NR here won an OMEGA rig and could share his experience. Try PM'ing him.

There also the little rig. Can't recall. It seemed to have shipping issues. If I am thinking correctly they have solved this. Anyway. Maybe someone will recall its name. Small seat like go kart. Made of pipe. Very simple but effective.

Yeah im using a pc chair with wheels right now. I put ratchet straps from my pedal stand to the base of the chair, and then use crossed rope to tie the arms to the base, minimizing movement. It works but is not perfect.

I do like the Omega's , like 350 US plus shipping, and no center bar.

BTW sorry for the double post, though I was doing a multi qoute, and didn't see an easy way to remove posts.

hahahahahaha.

Literally laughed out loud and my wife was like 'wtf?'

Hi! After reading these threads of yours, I'm afraid your GTLife will be chasing ghosts all the way long. Please realise, that the shiny brand new cockpit doesn't make you any faster. It could even make you slower in the first meters and there is only few Academy qualif. days left. So better mod your current set up so that it doesn't cause any pains and spend your time behind the wheel. (and be loving to your spouse ;) )

I wish you best of luck.

I have a very comfortable office style chair that I use sometimes.. I am on hardwood flooring. I find doubling over a towel and putting it under the rollers works quite nicely in keeping the wheels from moving while driving.

I had a thick area rug before... But the dogs decided to drop a present on that.. so down to a doubled over towel.

If you lived close to Montana, I would love to sell you mine. It's custom and not modular so it's pickup only.

I can't say it improved any times, but having a real car seat under your bum made those longer races that much more pleasurable.

Play for fun man, and in my experience, a cockpit is more fun!

@Dhalism, thank you for making me laugh, still smiling at trying to figure this one.:)
as far as the question, I am not a one of the fast guy, but I am very comfortable playing with my set up.
I use a self made moveable wood base where my wheel and pedals are bolted. The base then is consolidate to my desk when I play and I am confortably seated on my desk chair. Only mod to the chair is that I removed the wheels to prevent the chair from sliding to easely.
I agree with all statement stating a better set up might be more immersive but very unlikely to make any one any faster. Comfort is important for long online session.

I like my Playseat Evo w/ G27. Straight forward and gets the job done. Came out to just under $600 w/ the H pattern shifter attachment. In the couple of years I've owned it the seat has some fraying where I get in/out, but this isn't just my sim rig, it's where I sit to use my laptop everyday so take that for what it's worth. I've done races like the Rolex 2.4 hour of Daytona in iRacing and been comfy the whole time.

I use a desk setup with office chair...

...or if I wanna play on a bigger tv I use this wheel stand thing that I built with some random chair I had.

And I use a DFP to play GT.

EDIT: Here is an older setup I had. Got a bucket seat for free from craigslist, put a seat cover on it and bolted it to a piece of plywood. The table was made from some mdf, wood glue, and screws. Spent about ~$10 on the materials.

EDIT2: Dug up this gem...keyboard stand and office chair! Terribly uncomfortable.

Damn AJ (HUNK) you got enough microsoft wheels? As junky as they are i guess it pays to have back ups. My CSR fans are starting to make really bad noises after all the use its been getting lately. Wish i would have kept my microsoft wheel around.

My gaming rig consists of an organ stool, 3 wood blocks, and a Lazy Boy. It's perfectly comfortable.

I bought a 2nd one for backup right before the Hyundai tourney started. I've actually never had one fail on me...guess I've been lucky. I know Greekman has an MS Wheel graveyard at his house, lol.

I never had mine fail either but it would turn off by itself at all the wrong times.

Okay so i've got the woman sold on a Playseat, she was asking if i could adjust it to let her use it too... Good sign.

So which model should i go for, I see Evolutions out there for 350 ish, all the way up to the Revolution for 500+. Is the Revolution worth the extra money? If the revolution is not worth it, I was thinking the Playseat Alcantara looked pretty good. I did notice that the more expensive Playseat's had the adjustable wheel mount.
