No gents, I have not been lucky enough to find a girl, I have found a baby bird. It was sitting near my doorstep on the ground. It is in the stage where it has feathers but not many of them. I haven't had any experience with birds before and I am unsure on the breed, but it is 100% wild and the nest and mother were nowhere to be found. For the past couple of days it has been living in a shoe box with an old t-shirt to keep it comfy. It has been poo-ing regularly and I have been feeding it a mixture of bread crumbs and regular bread with a bit of water so it can get some liquids in its system. I have no clue on what the breed of it is, but it was found in the mornington peninsula area in Victoria, Australia.

That's a picture of the ugly thing.

Has anybody had any experience with raising birds and what should I do with it? I also think that it may have a damaged left foot, I am not sure, I will have to keep an eye on it when I let it go for a walk in about 5-10 minutes.

We had a baby bird (a magpie a think) abandoned in our garden once. We have lots of cats in our area, and had no idea what to do, so I did a quick search for an animal rescue centre nearby. A quick phone call, and they were happy to take it. That's what I'd recommend, it would probably be much better off in professional care.

I was thinking that. It was at our beach house and we believe that the bird in our driveway that was dead was the mothers other child. We have had some heavy winds recently and it would explain why they were out of their nest. We've been moving around a lot in the past couple of days, so the shoe box was very make-shift. I'll probably take it down to the rescue centre tomorrow. Hopefully it's open!

Based on the picture you've provided, I'm almost certain that the breed of bird you have in your hands here, is a Kiwi. It probably flew all the way from New Zealand and got tired so it took a rest at your doorstep and found you! Trolling of course, kiwi's are fruits. :sly:

And he ain't ugly, he's a cute little fella. :dopey:

What you should do, I'd say go with what mattythedog suggested.

x3 with the above - professional animal/bird rescue centre...

Good job on the 'rescue' so far though :)

Well it was jumping all over the place and I am guessing attempting to fly when I let it go for a walk before. It fell over a couple of times though. It's a long weekend here, i'm fine to keep looking after it until the weekend is over if the shelter isn't open.

I have a friend who has a pet Magpie, and hand-rears injured birds she finds, but x4 with the professional animal/bird rescue centre.

You do realize that kiwi's can't fly, right? Nor can Kiwifruit, I tried to make kiwifruit fly but it didn't end well.

And for the record, the bird is not a kiwi.

Hahahahahaha

That'd be the same as trying to make an egg fly.. Correct? Also it reminds me of the joke about the lady who broke up with her boyfriend because of the furry eggs in the fridge.

Possibly. But an egg has a connection with a bird. Kiwifruit? Doesn't have any form of connection with a kiwi (bird) whatsoever.

Did you check for its mother.

I took care of a chick once, its mother was flying around.

The bird was trying to fly but could not take off, since its nest was on the roof on the house behind our house, it most likely tried to fly and landed in the backyard.

Have any more pics of it?

It's beak looks a bit odd.

I was doing some research as to what type of bird it was and I'm stuck as to whether it's an Indian Myna bird or not. The break doesn't have the usual yellow on it that the Myna does. The birdy is currently sleeping, but when it wakes up I shall take some more pictures. I am planning to take it to the vet around the corner tomorrow morning so they can check its foot and species.

You can use this bird to pick up other birds...

We have four cats in our house so we get this a lot. My mum usually gets an empty sweet tin and puts a bit of tissue in the bottom for a bit of comfy bedding. Then put the lid about 3/4 of the way over to calm it down. After a couple of hours, just go as far away from the house as possible with it and release it to let nature take it's course.

When I saw the title of the thread I thought the op was talking anout a girl.

Since some brits call them birds, when I saw he was from oz I was going to say use the word Chick as that is what ozzies call girls.

Turns out I should have said it cause it is a chick since it a baby and baby birds are called chicks.

Search for a wildlife rescue centre in your area and in the meantime just keep it warm.

Get rid of it immediately. This particular species is known to drop its young near unsuspecting greater animals. The bird will grow up using your resources before pecking your eyes out in the night and returning to the roost with its ocular bounty.

The iBird?!! OMG!

:scared:

That's no ordinary birdbrain. Follow the Dog's advice and contact the men in the white lab coats pronto. Or as Omnis says, gift it to an enemy.

I took it down to the vet this morning and they said they were going to put it to sleep without hesitation. The thing owes me a piece of bread!

However it looks like Omnis has uncovered the secret plot of the animal kingdom which will eventually allow animals to rule the wo-..
