so does anyone know what the temporal lobe is used for in out brains?

It's got nothing to do with "time", despite the similar Latin root. The temporal lobes are mostly used for language, in conjunction with the frontal lobes and memory, in conjunction with the hippocampus. They also play an important part in emotional response.
