In GTS, you could see exactly what type of transmission your car had under the settings menu. I recall there being five different transmissions: AT, MT, sequential MT, DCT, and CVT. But in GT7, the stock transmission is simply listed as "normal."

Now, what I'd want to do for a future GT game, is have the transmission type and assists depend on the car model, rather than a menu that applies to every car you get into. If I recall correctly, for one example, the McLaren F1 came without TCS. So, I'd force players to buy a part from the tuning shop if they want a McLaren F1 with TCS. Similarly, I wouldn't give every road car to adjust their fuel map right from the showroom. That would also require a part, ideally, but in exchange, this would lead to potential races where you may want to note your car's typical MPG and fuel tank size, both of which would be listed alongside other stats like power, weight, and engine displacement. On the other hand, if a car does come IRL with the ability to say, adjust brake balance, you would not need to buy that part.

As for transmissions, if your car came as an AT or MT, and you wanted to upgrade either into a sequential MT, you could still buy the full-customize racing transmission to do so. Otherwise, I'd map L1 as the clutch for more typical MTs, as you'd still be able to look back by using the right analog stick. (Or better yet, a rear-view mirror would be available in every view, and not just bumper cam.) Sure, I'd allow players to play without mapping the clutch, but I'd make it so that even a decently-skilled human player will always be notably faster than if the clutch is automated.

Indeed, it'd only be if the car comes as a DCT - such as various Porsche and Ferrari models - that you'd be able to open the settings menu to go between AT and a sequential MT.

I believe this would add a drastic amount of character to each car, and truly would capture the more notable joys of motoring. It could make GT further stand out from other big racing game IPs like NFS and Forza, but most importantly, it'd get GT a lot closer to being "The Real Driving Simulator."
