Sound Problem

i recently developed (this evening in fact) a problem in which i cant hear any sound on my PC, the only sound i can hear is something being played by windows media player, try and play anything else which involves sound and nothing happens. the time remaining bar moves as if the sound is playing but i just cant hear anything. would be appreciated if anyone can help because its really starting to p**s me off.

Try messing with the volume controls. Go to the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and double-click on it to open up volume controls.
