Speaker Problems

Okay. I turned on my PC a few minutes ago and noticed the subwoofer was pushed up. I then pushed it back into its normal place. I turn on my computer and realize the sound is coming from my right speaker only. I have everything plugged into my subwoofer right. Anyone know what the problem is?

Pushed up...as in pushed up against something? It sounds like a loose connection (I get that from time to time). Try jiggling the plugs on your sound card, sub and speakers. That should at least tell you where the problem lies.

If it's a multi-speaker system, try rebooting the sound system. Yes, I do mean cycle the power to it. My Altec Lansing Dolby Digital kit does this from time to time, and all I do is unplug the sub for a few seconds, then plug it in again, and all is well once the system resets.

OK, well take the stereo jack out of the computer, and plug it into a Walkman, and see what you get. This will confirm if it's a problem with the speakers or the sound card.

If your left/right speakers are interchangeable (mine are not), reverse the connections. If the sound then moves to the left, you have a problem with the individual speaker that was on the left. If not, then the problem is with the sub passing the signals out to the speakers.

Try turning the volume all the way up, with no input signal. Are all the speakers hissing? If not, are none of them hissing? If only the speaker that is not playing sound is not hissing, then the chances are it's a broken wire/pin in the plug.

If the speaker is pushed up to its outermost position, then your amplifier (in the sub) is clipping or outputs short circuited and creating direct current. Speaker and sound are created by an a/c signal and dc will do nothing but burn up a voice coil or destroy the speaker.
If everything goes through the subwoofer, try plugging in the speakers directly and see if you then getting the stereo signal.
Your sub probably has its own circuit and may be powered off of its own 110 plug in. If thats the case, then just bypass the sub and see what happens, your sound card may be ok.
Good luck with it.
