Welcome to Spec Saturdays! This will be a bi-weekly clean, spec racing event based off of real-life races. What this means is I will be using tuning restrictions that effectively simulate real-life race run by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), British Racing and Sports Car Club (BRSCC), and others. This event is also being run as a public event over at Why So Serious forums with a thread also posted on the official PSN forums, where friends of mine and I thought up this event together. Most of the time, cars will be premium for ease of access. If they aren't, as in the case of the Caterham Challenge, I can give cars to people.

What I'd like to make clear is that even though I'm doing a monthly points tally for a prize and to keep things healthily competitive, you are by no means obligated to show up for each event. This is being run more like Monday Night Endurance, where people can show up if they'd like, or wait until the next event if they can't make it. It is definitely more of a casual clean racing/spec racing meet-up type thing instead of a racing championship.

DETAILS:
  • WHEN: Saturdays 4:30 PM EDT, with the room opening at 4:00PM EDT.
  • LENGTH: 100-200km races, most of the time it will be two 100km races.
  • PHYSICS: Grip reduction will be set to REAL
  • DAMAGE: HEAVY
  • PENALTIES: OFF
  • DRIVING AIDES: ABS =1. All others OFF. In some cases I may allow TCS=2.

If I find people are going beyond these specs and downtuning to the PP cap with the ballast/power limiter, it will jeopardize their future involvement in participating in Spec Saturdays.

RACE SCHEDULE:
  • March 26th: Dunlop TVR Challenge (BRSCC) Completed!|Photos
  • April 9th: Viper ACR Challenge (SCCA)
  • April 23rd: Caterham Challenge (BRSCC)
  • May 7th: American Sedan Challenge (Classic SCCA/SVRA)
  • May 21st: MINI Challenge (MSA)
  • SPECIAL RACE* June 4th: Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance: Alfa Romeo vs. Lamborghini Dual

    RULES:
Clean racing practices spelled out in the OLR are to be followed at all times. For those who don't want to read much, it boils down to this:
    • Follow and pass cleanly; try not to bump. This means going into the corner, the lead has the right to the inside. If the lead messes up, you have the right to capitalize on his mistake and overtake him.
    • If by chance you cause an accident, you must let the car you knocked out retake its position in front of you even if it means you lose your position.
    • If you go off the track, you have to wait for the track to be clear for you to safely come back on. Wildly going back on the track and causing an accident is a big no-no because it screws up everyone else's race.
    • Blatant corner cutting and/or wall riding will be subject to an appropriate penalty.
    • You'll be subject to penalty/DQ if you don't follow these rules. This is so everyone involved has an enjoyable spec racing experience.

    POINTS:
    • 1st - 20 points
    • 2nd - 18 points
    • 3rd - 16 points
    • 4th - 12 points
    • 5th - 10 points
    • 6th - 8 points
    • 7th - 6 points
    • 8th - 4 points
    • 9th - 2 points
    • 10th - 1 point
    • DNF will be awarded points based upon current standing when race ends.
    • Leaving the race will be awarded 0 points
    • A lost connection to PSN in the middle of the race will be awarded 1 point.
    • The highest monthly scorer will receive a special prize from me, most likely a PSN Gift Card, and to keep things on the level, points will be tallied as cumulative and monthly separately

    Racers' PSN's/Monthly Points/Cumulative Points:

* SPECIAL RACE INFO
This special race based on the racing done at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will feature a special dual race between the winners of the 2008 and 2009 Polyphony Digital Trophy, the Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ2 '65 (10 million credits/win B Spec Historic Racing Cup) and the Lamborghini Miura P400 '67 (15 million credits). The racing will take place at Mazda Laguna Seca, since that is where the racing at Pebble Beach Councours d'Elegance is now held. You have until June 4th to come up with at least 10 million credits, which is VERY doable now that you can race your B-spec drivers while you're away from your PS3 and queue them for races via the web. I'm also looking into seeing if everyone can just borrow my cars for the race.

Thanks for the response so far for those of you who responded to me by PM whether you could make it or not. It's definitely appreciated! Overall, I have eight people who have expressed interest to me, so I think we'll be good to go for the first week to see how it goes. If you look in the OP, I have the racing specs and vehicle specs posted.

This coming Saturday, March 26th, we'll be doing the Dunlop TVR Challenge as our theme. Since I couldn't get a close enough track in the editor to model one of the BRSCC tracks, we're going with Nurburgring GP/F, which I think is a good choice for these cars and captures the spirit of the types of tracks run in this race in real life with regards to types of turns and track size.

Again, if you're interested in doing this, you can post on the thread, send me a PM, or send me a message/friend request on PSN to Ruta_Baracuda.

Car specs locked in for Saturday/bump. I'll try to get a practice room open sometime tonight, but no guarantees. I'm pulling late nights in lab (I'm a grad student in Chemistry) this week, so time is a precious commodity to me until the Saturday afternoon. If I can, I'll open my lounge early on Saturday for practice/final tuning adjustments before the first 100km race.

I'll be opening my lounge sometime between 3PM-3:30PM EST for tuning/practice before qualifying at 4PM EST. Racing starts promptly at 4:30PM EST.

OP updated with scores from the first week. Photos to come soon. Too bad PSN decided to cause errors on us for the second race. Anyway, since March only has one race, Exorcet wins the prize since he took first - a PSN gift card. Exorcet, I'll be sending you that soon. Jobzy wins the "Most Improved Driver Award" in the form of a TVR Cerbera Speedster 12 - nice work! All in all, it was a good show for the first race of this series, and I'm happy with the turnout.

Here are the results from the 100km:

1. Exorcet
2. ChronoJoe
3. EchoInTheSoul
4. Ruta_Baracuda
5. Jame334
6. Hallsy666
7. PhoenixSigma
8. Jobzy

Great race last weekend. It's a shame I'm going to miss the ACR event. Favorite car. I've got like 10 of them.

Yeah, glad you could make it! You know, I'd rather have people who love the ACR actually be in that race, plus it is one of the more restricted races concerning bolt-ons and internals (practically everything is stock in the SCCA PRO manual, save for an air filter swap) so I might push that one back to May if you're going to be around for it and move up the less restrictive classic trans-am (SVRA American Sedan) race to be the next one.

Hey Ruta, I'd like to take part in your ACR Viper race this saturday if I could... my problem is I get out of work about the same time you're planning on starting... is there going to be a qualifying/practice period before the race, that maybe will give me time to get home, and just jump in and start last if I have to?

Well, I usually open my lounge around 3:30 for practice and last-minute tuning, then qualifying starts around 4PM. The first race at 4:30 will be a sprint, about 10 laps, just to get people a feel for the track, since this is a more casual crowd that showed up for the first race two weeks ago. So, if you don't mind coming in during the middle of the sprint before the 100km race, you should be good.

I'm hoping to get a testing session in tomorrow night to determine whether or not we should allow the LSD. Even though the actual SCCA PRO specs say that the stock differential is required, this game is weird about the LSD settings. I've been pulling 12 hour days in lab (chemistry grad student) for the past couple weeks, plus helping my girlfriend's family to move, so I haven't gotten a whole lot of testing in for this particular race yet myself, besides the base testing I did when I put together the schedule a month ago.

Edit: After testing, I'm definitely going to allow an adjustable LSD. It's kind of hard not to with this car the way they did it in-game. Maybe if the in-game car handled more true to the actual ACR '08, it'd be a different story, but right now with the push, people will be riding tires pretty hard around the turns, and I don't think everyone wants to pit every 4 laps or so.

I've been trying to log on to PSN and haven"t been able to for the last half hour. Reset both modem and router, but can't figure this out. Maybe it is PSN. Anyone else having issues?

Neither t_ray_z28 nor I had issues logging in to PSN, but most people who had shown up the previous race and those who had expressed interest to me this past week weren't even logged in. Maybe PSN was having problems

actually, mine wouldn't log in at first. I had to reset my router before it would...

Did the race go or not?

No, it didn't. Pretty much only t_ray_z28 and myself showed up. ChronoJoe had to cancel, and Echo is moving to a new house. Besides B-McG, I don't know where everyone else was, since nobody else participating was even signed on to PSN. T_ray_z28 and I were talking about perhaps having a Viper ACR '08 spec race when you're able to race again.

Terms of Service. I had to accept new terms of service twice in the past week before I could sign onto PSN.

No, it just wouldn't connect... My laptop wouldn't connect either though, so I assume it was just my net.
