Spike TV Awards nominees for best driving game: Where the hell is GT5??

Do you know anything about the Gran Turismo series? Like the 46 million copies sold from the four main games themselves on one single console series. Gran Turismo is the half life of racing games.

A lot has changed.

PS1 was the best selling console of all time, far and away the dominant console of its time. There were 103 million PS1 sold, and the next competitor was N64 with about 33 million. Xbox wasn't even a thing yet.

PS2 sold 150 million (best selling console ever) to the Xbox's 24 million.

The 360 and PS3 are about equal in sales at 45 million, but are being dominated by the Wii at 75 million.

The days of Gran Turismo games selling ridiculous amounts of copies are over. Just got a lot more competition these days, both from other consoles and from other games (and games not even in the racing genre).

When GT1 came out it was revolutionary. GT5 is gonna be great, and everyone on GTPlanet is excited, but lots of people haven't even heard of it. Hell, lots of gamers haven't even heard of it.

If Polyphony released the game earlier this year instead of bumping release dates, Spike would've had the chance to slip in GT5 as a nominee. But I guess patience is a virtue after all. Don't mind me!

It's estimated that the average Wii owner has only got two games, one of which being Wii Sports (which comes with the console) and the other likely to be either Mario Kart or Wii Fit. I actually think it's a neat little console but it's obvious the software is no major threat to the others just yet :)

Spike awards are casual awards. Also why would they put a game that is about to be released..? 2011 the game will be on the list.

Not to mention brand changes. So many people who had a PS1/2 have moved on to the XBOX.

1. Its not out yet.

2. I know its hard to believe from the inside looking out but, GT5 in not the most anticapated release. Its safe to say that there are wayyy more people waiting on Portal 2.
Common sense. You have it.

Except the average gamer doesn't care. GT has no big market hype outside its fanbase because Sony & PD don't spend the money to do so. Portal, GOW, Bioshock, they have huge marketing teams spreading the word. Their series/prequels have done so amazingly well, that they're still fresh in people's minds.

GT doesn't have that luxury. It's been 6 years since #4, and PD doesn't exactly reveal a lot about it unlike the others.

It's hard to nominate a game with a release date as violate as GT5, oh well, better luck with GT6.

I can understand the fact it's not out being a factor for the Best Driving Game award, but it totally deserves a place in Most Anticipated. Portal 2 will probably end up being another 1h30m game that loses all significance once you know how to solve the puzzles.

Perhaps it was already noted...
I think because GT5 is a japanese game, perhaps they aren't in.. at least not right away.
Maybe spikes owners are mad because they have been kept from GT5 for 2 years as well...
Either way, I can't forsee it not winning it next year...

I like the soundtrack category; All bloody music games..
I guess that makes some sort of sense... but what happened to the good musically scored games that are you know.. original to the game!

Spike TV is not to be taken seriously....ever!

I saw some strange comments, about the average gamer not knowing about GT5, yet they would know about Portal 2? Seriously when in the world have you seen advertising for a Portal game? If you do not play PC games then I'm pretty sure you wouldn't know about Portal at all.

Thanks for the numbers , that put things into place , but you probably know that many people (a lot?) bought the ps3 thinking that GT5 was comming , and im pretty sure they will sell a lot of console to new ps3 user just because of gt5 . Some people that dont play games will want to play GT5 (ex: my dad and my uncle) or it could change the decision of someone when buying a new system. The game isnt out yet and i already bought a g27 and made a racing rig just for GT5 .

Gran Turismo is not known by everyone , but everyone who know it , love it.

Ill try to look at console sales next years , im thinking that the world could be surprised at how huge of a leap the ps3 has made.

-most delayed game
-least advertised game
-best laking of livery
-best laking of cockpit views

and

-best racing game ever until GT6

maybe they want to give some credit to not too hardcore racers, not all is simulation,I nominated PGR4 right away if is there.

You need only look at the numbers sold with Prologue to prove that your little hypothesis is wrong. The trend from sales is almost a carbon copy of previous sales. U.S. doubles Japanese sales followed by Europe doubling US sales. The fact that it was advertised as a demo was still not lost on the public.

The other is that Gran Turismo has always been a console selling game. But again, talking about sales, you fail to acknowledge one of GT's biggest market which has traditionally been Japan. A country where the Xbox struggles massively. This year alone its nearly 1 Xbox to every 10 PS3's sold. We then take into account the number of Xboxes sold and how many still actually work. I'd say 1 our 3 people have bought multiple Xbox's due to the massive failure rates. So that reduces the actual Xbox's in service to 30 million* So the market share for the Xbox has hardly increased at all. If anything in reality its only taken sales away from the 3rd party titles on the ps3 due to cross platforming.

Yes, The ps3 hasn't sold gangbusters like the PS2 and PS1, but it still isn't down to mass market price yet in most countries. I'd say over the next year or so, PS3 sales are going sky rocket and like wise, Sony's biggest game with go along with it.

* Yes the ps3 has a failure rate but nothing out of the ordinary compared to the Xbox 360. I'd say probably 1 in 10 'if that' PS3's have failed.

The VGAwards are always rigged. A prime example? They had a debut trailer for Halo Reach last year, and did not nominate Killzone 3 for any award, not even for graphics. Instead, they nominate Halo Reach this year for 7 awards... ,just. Expect bias from Spike.

You'll struggle to find a game with as much hype and public awareness amongst both gamers and non-gamers as the GT series, it really is up there with the Marios, COD's and FIFA's of this world.

Spike TV is for frat boys who can't get over Call of Duty disease and constant gore in all of their games.

I'm 17, and I play COD. But I play more than that.

Jus' sayin'

And, back on the main point, the game had to be released before the show nominees were aired. Uncharted 2 barely got in last year's awards.
