The SSC Tuatara has had a long, arduous journey to production. First announced nearly a decade ago, hiccups delayed production and kept the first models from reaching customers' hands. That changed last year when SSC – Shelby SuperCars – showed the first production car. Now, at the Philadelphia Auto Show, SSC has unveiled the first of 100 Tuatara production hypercars.
While it did take time for the Tuatara to become a reality, we've known about much of its performance specs for a while. Powering the Tuatara is a twin-turbocharged 5.9-liter flat-plane-crank V8. It produces 1,750 horsepower (1,305 kilowatts) on E85 and 1,350 hp (1007 kW) on 91 octane. Power routes through a robotized CIMA seven-speed transmission, capable of shifting gears in less than 100 milliseconds. With a dry weight of 2,750 pounds (1,247 kilograms) and a drag coefficient of 0.279, it should be superbly fast.
The Tuatara uses carbon fiber for the exterior and for the monocoque. There's exposed carbon fiber in places, too. Jason Castriota, who has penned designs for Ferrari and Maserati, collaborated with SSC on the design and aerodynamics of the hypercar. The dihedral doors, which are button operated and hydraulically actuated, are as wild in design as the rest of the car.
Inside, there are creature comforts such as premium audio, a touchscreen infotainment system, climate control, power windows, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The touchscreen also allows access to the driving modes, vehicle diagnostics, entertainment, and more. Paddle shifters hide behind the steering wheel that features a shift light indicator. SSC says someone as tall as 6-feet, 5-inches can fit comfortably inside even while wearing a racing helmet.
SSC will build just 100 Tuatara hypercars. The company didn't release pricing information with the debut; however, back in 2013, the company planned to charge $1.3 million each. This is an important car for SSC, and a worthy successor to the SSC Ultimate Aero, which held the Guinness World Record top speed title until the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport dethroned it. SSC believes the Tuatara can reach 300 miles per hour (483 kilometers per hour). Let's find out.
