Steering wheel, Analog, D-pad?

What do you use to steer?


I'm at my best in Digital:tup: (I learned with the D-pad (NES-SNES-PS1 etc...)
follow closely by analog....All I can say with the steering wheel is:HERE COMES THE WALL:scared::crazy:!!
 
I've never ever ever ever ever ever ever been able to drive dedicated racing games with analog sticks. Even games like Enthusia which force you to use analog sticks from the beginning. Now, for some driving games (like GTA) I can do so, but not racing games, and not dual analog.

Interestingly enough, for some games I am considerably faster with a wheel than I ever was with a controller. Even more interestingly, GT4 is not one of those games. I still play GT4 with a wheel, but I am quite poor at it.
 
I'm about 98% of the time with the D-pad..I can be so much more precise with that than anything else.I like the steering wheel just because its fun!!!!
 
I went analog steering to full analog to steering wheel to analog steering (when the DFP broke) to full digital and back to the wheel once I fixed it and bothered hooking it up to the PS2.

I CAN be just as fast with the controller (perhaps even slightly faster) but it's just so much easier with the wheel to drive quickly.
 
I was discussing this on another board a day or so ago.

I started playing gt 'seriously' with gt3 and I used d-pad exclusively. With gt4 I started out with d-pad and then switched over to analog stick and liked that for years. Much to my dismay I could not play gt5p with a controller in any fasion what so ever, so I bought a dfgt for that.

I've gone back to gt4 several times over the past year and while I'm more consistant and competitive with the wheel, I can still lay down my fastest hot laps with the ds2 and analog stick.

I'm curious to see how it goes with gt5, not sure I'd actually commit to using a controller again but I'd like to be able to without the dificulties I experienced with gt5p.
 
With GT1, I use the D-Pad from the original PS controllers. With GT2 and GT3, I used the DualShock2. The DS2 was also used for most of GT4 before I purchased a Driving Force Pro. I still have the DFP for GT5:P and GT5, and will continue to use it until it dies -- then most likely move to a Driving Force GT.
 
Personally I have never liked the PS gamepads. They are to small and uncomfortable for someone with hands the size of mine. Still I played GT4 100% with the DS and did rather well claiming some decent lap times and many 200 A-Spec races. A few weeks ago I got a DFGT wheel and hooked it to the PS2 just to see how it worked in GT4. I started a new career and ended up running a bit over 80 races with it. Not quite as fast as I once was but after 2 years of not playing it I was a bit rusty as well as not having played it with a wheel before. Still was able to gold most of the driving tests and win every race but one. [picked the wrong car by mistake]

GT5 will be a wheel only game for me. I did run the first few races in GT5P with the game pad and did alright but then I got the wheel and finished the game took a little while to get the hang of it. Especially when driving that Ford GT test car with no assists but it feels great now :)
 
I don't have a steering wheel, and I don't get why I'd need one when I have a controller, and I prefer analog to d-pad, so analog it is.
 
I have both a steering wheel and a DS2. It's a pain in the arse learning how to use the steering wheel. I've had to completely change my driving style from throwing the car into corners to being more easy on the throttle and the brakes.
 
I don't have a steering wheel, and I don't get why I'd need one when I have a controller, and I prefer analog to d-pad, so analog it is.

To put it simply the wheel 1 gives you more control and 2 feels more like the real thing.


btw whenever I refer to the game pad I am referring to using the analog stick, never the d-pad that is just horrible to drive with.
 
Hello, have not played GT4 in a long time. Loaded it today.
Is it possible to use a G27 ?
I could not get the game to recognize it.
 
Always had the pad.but out of frustration gut the wheel.if you are sharp with the pad so would your driving.but with the wheel driving is so much better for enjoyment and realism.the wheel gives you the feed back of the body of the car in the Pam of your hand absolutely incredible.if i had known this a long time ago my gaming experience would have been far more enjoyable.literally speaking only for GT and forza.very hard to get the knowledge of the wheel at first but once you do:):):)
 
Hello, have not played GT4 in a long time. Loaded it today.
Is it possible to use a G27 ?
I could not get the game to recognize it.

I would think it should work, I was able to use my DFGT and also able to use my 911 Turbo S. I can't set the button layout on it but steering, brake and shifting all work fine other buttons seem to be mapped as they would on the gamepad.
 
Thinking about purchasing a steering wheel...but got a few questions after using an old design wheel and pedals years back.
Do any wheels on the market now have more than about a third of a turn each way? Having more turns lock to lock will be far more realistic and feel more real than "go kart" steering lock...
Do wheels have force feedback in them? I mean "kickback" through the wheel if you hit a curb, etc.
Size...I've used wheels that would be too small for a go kart...on my Celica when I was racing I used a 14" sports wheel...so do most touring cars and the like now...too small a wheel and you lose leverage and feel.

I tried a wheel briefly with GT1 back in the day, it just didn't work at all. However I can't imagine driving in GT4 without my trusty DFP.

The Logitech Driving Force Pro (aka DFP) is 900 degrees (2 1/2 turns) lock to lock, and I believe all its successors are as well.

Actually the DFP has a 200-degree mode and a 900-degree mode, and it defaults to 200 degrees lock to lock with GT3. In my opinion that sacrificed a bit too much precision (or maybe I just sucked, which is entirely possible) while 900 degrees allowed too much slop with GT3.
 
D-pad for me. I find it easier and more precise to multi-tap on the direction I want than to hold the analog stick.
 
The problem with tapping the d-pad is every tap causes friction and slows you down. a smooth analog usage will always be faster.
 
digital up to gt4 for me, was always my best. played nfs shift with the analogs, they were good enough with that game. Got my DFGT last week and have been using it on gt4. Took a few days but now im destroying my times by like 3-5 seconds. the ability to drive smoother and eliminate tap braking and accelerating really gives you an edge over a controller. I'm really glad I have some saved hotlaps from ages ago to compare with.
 
But the analogue sticks get looser the more you use them, and more tiny corrections are required, unless you have oodles of thumb skill :)
 
Even when they are loose and you need to make tiny corrections you still should get less friction as the taps of the stick do not turn the wheels so much. Less friction means more speed.
 
Not neccesarily. If you have a drifty, loose or what have you driving style the d-pads are fine and even with a really good grippy tune it doesnt matter as the only track i ever have to tap any button on is test course.
 
D-pad > analog for me personally when it comes to a drag, circuit or rally race. Greater control with tapping rather than sticking. That said, I will use the left analog at times for messing around, doing burnouts and drifting...but I'm still more in control with the D-pad when doing those things rather than with the stick.
 
On the DS2, DS3 and SixAxis, yes.
Really.. I did not know that. I haven't even tried to use it for control when there is an analog stick.

I remember the old controllers with the d-pads driving NFS 1 and 2 every time you would tap the dpad you would see a little rubber laid down on the road.
 
I use the analog stick, I've never used the D-Pad, and I've never used a wheel.

But I really want to try a wheel out and see if I like it.
