I thought this would be fun: What’s the story of your car? Has it had any accidents? When did you put in that turbo? Give a (kind of) quick story of your car. Here is mine:

I first got it Dec. 25 after checking it out twice and seeing it was all right. I couldn’t drive it yet, because it was manual but I thought it was good for $400
Well when we got it, the first obvious thing was that its serpentine belt was LOOSE, good one! Oh Before I delve any further I want to quickly say this woman didn't give a damn about her car AT ALL! Anyways, I drove it for about a week and I noticed it never really got warm and shifting was kinda crappy also there was a horrible buzzing sound coming form the 6x9s in the back that were hooked up to an amp. Awhile past and we led the problem to a Master slave cylinder leaking, and boy was it leaking(not cool) Well we got that changed eventually but then there was another problem, after Driving it for about a month I finally got it on a lift to check the tranny oil and it was basically empty, well there’s a reason for the O-ring by the drive shaft was sort of shot, so we replaced that, It was fun pulling that crap off :P It also needed a new thermostat Meanwhile I had put in 4 new speakers because I blew out 3 of 'em :) Well after then I had gotten a good amount of money and decided I need to put it into my car. So I went out and bought new wheel covers, new CD player and new mats. Well that was also the day that someone ran into me :) Wahoo!!
Well she at first was really nervous and asked her to follow her, well I did and when she got to her place I found out she didn't have insurance so we worked out a deal where she would have her friend fix my door and rear panel for free. So I let her translator drive my car to someplace where I didn't even know to someone who I never met to work on my car. How’s that for trust?
He did a decent job I think...even though I'm sure some of you can guess what that’s off of however, now my seatbelt doesn't work; anyone know how to fix that? Finally Just recently I put in a new Tie-rod and rear Hydraulics (right?) for my hatch AND did an alignment. Yep well that’s a (kinda) brief story of my car.

There we go.

I bought my car in late August 2004.

Then this occurred about twelve times:

After two radiators, five engine mounts, two sets of tires and four tires not involved in those sets, two new sets of brake pads, CV joints, new tail lights and headlights and a new passenger window and window motor, I sold my car in September 2006. At that point, the rear bumper was askew, the spare tire was rotted, and the horn was inoperable. Most of the dash lights didn't work, too, and the leather was cracking. Furthermore, the weatherstripping around the windshield was coming off. We glued it before we sold it.

But it ran a fifteen!

I bought my car, a white Volvo 850 in September last year. It worked fine for a few months, but then the windscreen fell out. I found out the previous owner had just used some kind of wood glue to keep it in place. I got that repaired, then I was unlucky enough to get a puncture. No problem I thought, I'll just put the spare on, and be on my way. But, No! I opened the boot to get the spare out, but it had rotted away leaving me with just the rim. I slammed the boot shut in frustration, and to my horror, the rear bumper fell off!

If I ever see the guy that sold it to me, I'll batter him!

Anyway, I got my Peugeot 406 Coupe nearly 4 years ago. I love the look of the car and I had to get one. It had been previously owned by someone who used it as a company car. It was fairly low mileage though, and hadn't seen much use. I think he just must have left it outside the front of his business to give his company an air of class!

It had been in some kind of accident before I got it, on the passenger side, and the paint match wasn't all that good, so I got the side resprayed. A colleague at work also reversed into it and broke the front bumper, which was repaired. I have since knocked it into a fence post in supermarket carpark and cracked the front bumper again, but I haven't bothered fixing it.

It's been fine mechanically, with just normal servicing carried out, although it did need a fair bit of work when it went in for its major 80,000 mile service (Its only done 74,000, but it is 8 years old and I thought I'd better get it done as Peugeot recommend 80,000 miles or 8 years for the cambelt.)

It has always ran great, and I have no plans to change it. I've just put on some new tyres (Michelin Pilot Primacy HP), and with its big service behind it, it should be good for another 30,000 miles!

Bought my truck in Feb. of 2003 brand new from the dealer's lot. It had a whopping 12 miles on it or something to that effect. It's basic as you can get, the only options were the Xtreme package, air con, and my favourite a leather wrap steering wheel...how's that for some high class! Anyways it's been in 3 major accidents since then, thousands of dollars in repair, thousands more in custom parts, it's been broken into once, I think 6 fender benders, and someone peed on it when they were drunk. Needless to say it took it like a champ and she really needs to die a timely death.

Wow, seems like some unfortunate events for all of you. But, they make good stories though.

I bought my 1985 318i back in 2004, and I've been driving it since then. Aside from the expected electrical gremlins, along with a pretty knackered interior that produces plenty of creaks, groans, and other noises, this car has been fairly trouble-free. That isn't to say it hasn't given me any trouble at all -- the alternator, master cylinder, and clutch diaphragm had to be replaced, and the electronic lock system fried itself -- but it has almost never failed to get me where I need to go (one of the wires to the alternator had a poor connection before the alternator itself crapped out, so my battery drained itself a few times, once on the side of a highway. However, after waiting for several minutes and push-starting the car, it always worked again).

But enough about problems. On to the positives!

Everything about the car just works for me -- the handling is great, the fuel economy is great, the styling is great, the straight-line performance is adequate, and I rarely find myself wishing for more passenger/cargo room...at this point, I can't really imagine owning anything else.

With that in mind, I'll continue to drive it to the point where it would simply be dumb to continue fixing it. After that, I'm thinking about taking out a loan for an E34 or early E39 5-series.

On Jan. 11th 2000 I pad $2700 for a 1990 Chevy Camaro RS V8 that had 117k miles. And on that day I was in love with it. I had so much fun in that car--and I think that bodystyle Camaro is the best after the 1969 model. I drove it for a little over three years before selling it to my brother for like $300 or something since his car was repo'd. It had a little over 145k miles when I sold it to him. I had bought a 1995 Maxima SE only a couple of days before. He drove it for about 3 years before I bought it back from him a couple of months ago for $100. Now after a couple of months of it sitting and me not having any money to do anything I finally got that tire and battery that I needed to get it running. I finally got to drive it home today and nothing out of the ordinary happend. It currently has 223k miles on it (237k on the odometer) and still runs like it did when it had 140k miles. Now the pics of its current state:

Add 1 drivers seat, minus 1 front license plate, and minus a few more interior trim pieces such as the door arm rests...etc.

Can I be the first to put a totally positive experience up? Edit: no, JCE3000GT snuck in when I wasn't looking :P

Bought my 1992 Italian Job Mini in February last year, with 11,500 miles on the clock. 1 owner from new - a little old lady who drove to the shops once a week and garaged her the rest of the time - and she sold her to me for £2550. The car still had the same 175/45 Pirellis on that she left the factory with 14 years earlier, so those were first to go, replaced with 165/60 Falkens. Popped a CD/USB player in where the cassette player used to be (still got the cassette player to make her original again). 13 months later, she's still going strong; tested on a rolling road in July, she achieved 45hp and 72lb/ft from her 1275cc engine:

I would love to get another car to commute with and leave her garaged to keep the miles down - but as yet no such luck; we just don't have the space to store another car.

Photos from the day I bought her, back to school, outside Goodwood House and on the FoS startline:

A car was born on April 20th, 1994. The parents at Toyota city, named it Ahrisuto at first. however, due to an economy that was starting to dwindle, the family decided it was best to send it to America. However, in order to distinguish it as an American, it was renamed GS 300, so as to better assimilate with the culture.

Someone (she'll remain nameless) bought the car (likely paying too much for it), and gave it a happy home...garage kept, rarely driven, with an average of 3200 miles driven on it per year. And it went in for its booster shots every year, fluids checked, and all the health inspections. In 1998, the ankle sockets were replaced, because it was thought that it might become pidgeon-toed.

All went well for many years, until in 2005, the power steering pump and rack were leaking badly. Without hands and knees, the car couldn't move. The owner sent the car to the hospital, where the doctor performed the operation, as well as a full service and health inspection. The owner, however, wanted something new, and dumped it off one day.

The car was set to be wholesaled, as the showroom had no room for an over 10-year-old Lexus with 35,000 miles on it, no matter how pristine. Then came Hurricane Katrina. The car survived he storm; just a lot of rain...but there was a backlog of cars to be transported away. When it came time to inspect the lot for car damage, I laid eyes on the car I once wrote up for service. I grabbed the keys.

I gave it a new life, zapping it with a defribulator, and it started right up. A new battery did the trick. A full safety inspection proved the car was in great shape, no major problems. The car was happy again. Of course, Hurricane Wilma was right around the corner...

The roof was dented, a window smashed, windshield and side window pelted with pebbles at 120 mph which scratched one side badly. Hundreds of heavy tree limbs scattered around my property, and of course, a few dozen landed on my car. It was scratched in several places, a few dents here and there, and plenty of water drenched the interior. It wasn't so "new" anymore.

It took three months to get it fixed; no windows for two months. The car was completely repaired, just like new. Of course, since that, it's needed an engine computer, a throttle position sensor, an alternator, a crankshaft harmonic balancer, an air conditioning compresor clutch, a set of front brakes, front seatbelts, and an alignment. Old luxury cars aren't cheap to maintain, unless you work for said manufacturer.

Anyhow, she's still running strong. Except for the seat track motor, it's far to expensive, even at my discounts. But I fit nearly perfectly; there's 8 other seat controls that work fine. It's no speed demon right out of the blocks, the motor has plenty of grunt at 3000 rpm (perfect for passing on the highway), it's not too bad on fuel economy, it idles smoothly and nearly perfectly quiet, the speakers are in great shape, seat lether is in wonderful shape, it's comfortable, handles the bumps, doesn't rattle or creak, interior and exterior parts fit perfectly and aren't loose, it's clean, and fairly unique in these parts. the steering is a little vague at slow speeds, but it tightens up at higher speeds. I can slide out the rear end every so often.

I wish it had a 5th gear (1996-97 models do), but that's about it. Another 20 horses couldn't hurt.

Good god that Mini is sexy. Absolute automotive porn. :embarrassed:

Back in January 2005, a tragedy had occurred. It had been a rough winter for my former car, one that was bitterly cold, extremely wet, and worst of all a time of death. Although she moved like a soldier through those months, she was eventually taken away from me by some stupid girl at the local high-school after a near head-on accident. In those last few moments, she ran like she had never done before, and then I pulled the plug. There are many days in which I wish that my old Fox was still with me, and I would love to visit her grave, but I do not know what happened to her. Only that she was bought, and presumably parted-out.

...But I had moved on. With a strong taste for VWs still within me, I went searching for nearly a month for a new mate. The Internet tubes were kind, and I stumbled across a beautiful silver K2 Jetta, circa 1998. She was as lovely as ever, beautiful headlights, a clean and well-maintained body, and my gosh what a lovely rear. It was if the beauty of the Gods had been installed within her. The relationship certainly started off well, but it went quickly downhill from there. She was too expensive, and I realized it early, and well thankfully enough her older sister was still available.

Yes, that is when I met Jenna. Although she was two years older than her sister, she certainly shared many of the same traits. They were both silver, both had nearly identical interiors, and had much of the same equipment (rear spoiler, moonroof, manual transmission, etc)... But, Jenna was not without her blemishes. Given that Jenna had come from Denver, Colorado one would have expected a rough early-life, and that certainly was true. But her maintenance was up to date (for the most part), and she had done a good job dressing up with the German-EU plate and the new 14" shoes. Good news was that the pricing was right, and I bought her on the spot.

From that moment on, things have been what you would expect in a relationship. Jenna and I have had our ups and downs, but we have for the most part been happy. What a great car on the highway, however when traveling with friends I have to be careful. We injured one of her rear-shocks while in Chicago, and it had gone un-noticed for too long, and only recently needed replacement. Similarly, her battery recently required replacement (unfortunately on the coldest day in decades here in Grand Rapids), and current she probably is deserving of a checkup at the doctor.

But what can I say. Jenna is a solid 12 years old by now, and she is looking well for her age. I often wonder if she resents the fact that I always look at other Jettas, but I always tell her I can't help it. I'm a man after all.

Good ol' Jenna. God love her, she is a wonderful car.

D*mmit, daan, your car is just awesome. I don't know why, but I would totally buy a Peugeot 406 Coupe if they were sold here.

My story is pretty positive too, got my1987 Mercedes 300E for $1700 about 2 years ago with 155k on the clock and its been a good time, almost 25k and maybe $2000 later I have almost nothing but good things to say about my 124 "schnauzer". The only thing I really did was the sound system and various sets of wheels and tires from other Mercedes. The only major repair was the trans which I replaced about a year ago, other than that its just the usual electrical gremlins and general up keep (all of which I've done myself with help from a MB tech friend of mine). However since my friend is willing to sell his car (same model from 1988) for a very low amount I've decided its time to let schauzer go... gotta love craigslist even though it is taking forever

car - redhot 2002 Holden SS Commodore, 6 spd manual

bought the car a few months ago with 64,500 ks on the clock, 1 owner, full service history. first thing i did was ditch the turtle shell. had it for a week to get use to the power, then the mods began. first up i gave it a major service, absolutely everything, all fluids, leads, plugs, etc then it recieved a monaro cold air intake with twin hold mod, k&n filter, throttlebody bypass, pacemaker 4 into 1 (inch and 3/4) extractors and two full stainless 3 inch high flow cats. next i changed the valve springs to comp 918's and installed a rip shifter :) the week after it got a 4 inch gts maf pipe and a mafless tune which gave it 227.6 rwkw and 540 nm! put a pedders urathane diff mount in to. i absolutely love it, just peels the tyres which were virtually brand new when i got it. the rears are ****ed now (michelin pilot precedas) woops!

so basically it went from some old farts car to weapon in about 3 weeks and should be good for a very low 13

future mods include, textralia x grip clutch, comp cam(maybe heads), 3.9 diff gears, kaaz lsd diff centre, harrop diff cover, over the radiator cold air intake and so on

should be good, want to get into the 11's

Dear God what I would give to have one of those here in the US. Throw some Chevy badges on it, do a few modifications, and I'd be happy. Yeah, we got the Monaro, but I'd rather have the Commodore overall (I think). Good news is that we'll have the Commodore by the end of the year (VE), and that indeed makes me very happy...

My 1988 supercharged MR2:

I searched for at least a year for a supercharged mr2 that wasn't a rustbucket. In late February I found an 88 SC with 146,XXX miles on it in upper state NY, bought it the next week. I came home with it on March 5th, 2006.
It was a bit of a fixer upper.

This picture makes me laugh, it kind of reminds me of a mentally challenged kid smiling.

This is how it looked when I bought it, I spent HOURS cleaning the engine bay. I'll post up some "after" pictures when I update this.

I fixed a few problems right after I bought it, some minor panel alignment issues, headlight linkages, etc.

A while later I installed a short shift kit with a new lever, drop plate..etc. along with that I gave it a nice new shift knob and leather boot.

3 months later, on March 21st I found myself lost in heavy rain on the wrong exit heading into Patterson. Thanks to a completely hidden stop sign at a merge, only 3 months driving experience, wet roads, lack of ABS (wasn't used to threshold braking) and the slow reactions of an old lady in a Toyota Camry I ended up with a smashed drivers side fender, a bent strut housing, 2 point careless driving ticket and a $130 ticket. I consider this my one "stupid inexperienced teenage driver" crash nearly everyone experiences.

I had the strut housing fixed at a garage (one of the only times I've ever brought my car to a garage for work) and got the car re-aligned.

After that I was much more cautious during everyday driving, I found a big parking lot and got used to threshold braking, and controlling the car in case the rear end broke loose (very tricky in a non LSD short wheelbase mid engined car)

After getting more comfortable I started to rev match downshifts, and practice heel-toe downshifts. I even got the hang of shifting without the clutch, which saved me from an expensive towing bill when my master cylinder went out.

I replaced so many parts on the car in between this time period cant remember them all, but I have a list of mods and things I've replaced I'll paste in at the end.

I picked up two free fenders from a cool MK1 guy in long island. One was in decent shape the other needed a bit of work, they sat for about 6 months before I got the hang of doing some light bodywork.

Late one night on the 17th of September 2006 I put something in the frunk and when I closed the hood for whatever reason the latch didn't catch. I realized this after I got up to about 55mph on the highway when I heard a huge smashing noise and suddenly couldn't see anything in front of me. Luckily there were no cars around, and I could just barely see the dotted road lines in between the bottom of the windshield and the curve at the top of the hood. I managed to pull over, got out.. checked the damage, and cursed quite a bit. I had a dented hood and a severely cracked windshield. I made sure the hood latched closed and drove home.

The next day I found a guy about 20 miles away from me parting out a 1987NA with a pretty straight body. I got a great deal on a hood and front bumper from him (my front bumper was slightly warped from the previous owner) the only problem is that the car was originally red.

Most of the front end taken apart to replace the bumper, bumper support foam, and the metal bumper.

The car was still so much fun to drive I took it out every once in awhile this way for about 2 months.

I bought some parts from a guy in Brooklyn, he gave me an extra spoiler he had laying around.
I took the extra spoiler and modified it after one I had seen on the MR2 forums.
(the whole process can be seen
here)
end result:

Once I realized I was alright with fiberglass and bondo I started to work on the extra fenders I had. Hours and hours worth of prep work, bondo and sanding and I had 2 like new fenders. Around the same time I took off the hood and started to prep it for paint.
Earlier this week the weather was beautiful, 80 degrees in early March. It was the perfect time to paint the parts. I managed to get the parts primered, and put one layer of black on them. I had planned on putting a few more coats on, then do the evil job of wetsanding and polishing but the weather took a 180 and we have about 7 inches of sleet and snow outside.
So I have a hood and two fenders with one coat of paint on them sitting in my garage waiting for good weather.
My car is almost back to being one color again :)

Heres a list of stuff that I've fixed/made/replaced over time.

LMAO, nice one Daan!

anyway, i spose heres mine

Car: 1992 Vauxhall Astra 1.4LS
Acquired date: October 2003
Price: £80 worth of tax!

This was my mums old car, she'd had it for a couple of years before i passed my driving test in september of '03. She said that i could have it if i paid her for the tax left on it. Although i didnt pay much for it, the first year of insurance turned out to be more than enough, £1400 :scared:.

Great little car, pretty nippy although i experienced some pretty nasty understeer coming off a roundabout a couple months after i got it, that got me just over onto the other side of the road! Luckily there was no traffic and i got away with just a heightened heart rate!

The squealy fanbelt problem got sorted when i got a new alternator. Later on in '04 at some point she overheated and i blew a head gasket, turns out when the guys at vauxhall put the alternator in they must have caught something on the radiator hose and sprung a leak, i couldnt get the cap off to put water in, and while we were trying to get hr started to get her to a garage the starter motor died too!

Soon after in February as i was round a mates house one night some little bastards stole it! Not a good start to my motoring experience! I got it back about 2 months later when it was found nearby, the damage wasnt too bad.

Broken window, both mirrors kicked off, ignition minced, parcel shelf missing, cd player front missing, car manuals which were in the glovebox missing, and i had a pool cue in the back too. the dent on the back was done a day or two before it got stolen.

Then less than a week before i got it back some stupid ass in a transit pickup managed to totally park me in and i didnt have much choice but to try again and again to get it out of the tiniest space you've ever seen, the result was this:

Before i managed to get that fixed i was reversing somewhere, i forget where now, when a low wall crept up on me leaving this:

Got her all fixed up in time for a visit to Santa pod raceway in june of '05. Also got a bargain noisy back box from ebay for £16! :D

All the way up to october '05 when i met my (ex) girlfriend, a long distance, 150 mile traul to northampton the car managed with no real problems, until just after leaving northants in january '06 my whole alternator came loose and i had to go back to get my ex-girlfriends dad to fix it!

after that i got some new wheels from a scrap yard, fitted my car well they did! just above this wheel you can see a new modification, using a pub car park gate post this time!

The real reason i got new wheels is because of what happened to the old ones, a nasty bit of something-or-other in the road got run over and did a fair bit of damage to my front left wheel, i had to drive for at least another mile just to find a suitable place to stop and change it.

Since the pic below ive managed to fix pretty much everything that was wrong with it, add some clear corners and side lights, replace a front headlight and got a new CD player :)

I even got the hang of shifting without the clutch, which saved me from an expensive towing bill when my master cylinder went out.

I hear this a lot about first gen MR2s, is it just something thats easier on that car?? Anyways sounds like an awesome daily driver

oh you will love the VE (g8) mate, the thing absolutely hammers (handles to). think motor mag ran a 13.4 1/4 mile in a stock ss. ive test driven a 6 spd auto and ****in loved it!!! my suggestion BUY ONE if you can

5 years ago parents borrowed it off a family friend just as a part time replacement for the incredibly problematic passat we had >.< we used it so much parents decided we might as well buy the damn thing off the owner :P £400. they decided to keep it for when i was old enough to drive it. near 3 years ago i was 17 at last and started learning, although i did have a tutor with a ford ka, i could use the rover with a parent now n then. paid for a named driver insurance part of it at £900 x_x took a while to actually like the thing and getting used to the prejudice of being on the road, the near miss of someone pulling out without looking, the people crossing onto the wrong side, onto pavements etc just to pass :odd: the common tailgating oh and the whiney little chav who followed me for 4 miles claiming i had hit him and saying he would report me for hit and run :odd: short waste of time as he tried to spin a sob story and pointing at a few old and weathered mere millimetre chips on his bumper, he took a claim on the insurance against me, had a representative from his insurance company come out and inspect my car and also fail to find anything and take witness reports >.< of course the notification (not claim) we had to make to my insurance affects the price still :odd:
:P took a year and 4 tests to finally pass, mainly because i took a looong break after one of them out of frustration (youd be too after 3 tests with no minors and a petty last minute "major") 2 in the ka and then the others in the rover, passed in the rover eventually few days after christmas last year. id got quite comfortable with it by then. only used it to go to work down the road 3 nights a week, first name driver insurance rocketed up to over £1600 only on a 3rd party 10 month no claims accelerator x_x
iv done quite a few long trips in it, driven to leeds (270miles), blackpool (250miles) and plymouth (170miles) recently, done absolutely fine :dopey: and going to plymouth and back it managed the 340 miles on 3/4 of a tank, my mum did work out that it did 45mpg but mayb she calculated wrong i dunno but still! :dopey: we have never had a problem with it, only thing we'v ever had to do was replace the exhaust once. gets an annual service and oil change etc. pretty chuffed me :P

^ I've never met anyone who is owned a Rover, and I have to say that my hat is off to you. That car rocks.

I hear this a lot about first gen MR2s, is it just something thats easier on that car?? Anyways sounds like an awesome daily driver

My MR2 is really the only manual car I've spent a lot of time in, so after I was really comfortable with the transmission I started to learn the advanced stuff like clutchless shifting and heel-toe downshifting.

If anything, my car is probably harder to shift without the clutch then other cars because of the worn trans. My transmission shifts like an old Lamborghini... It's very notchy and requires a bit of muscle to put into gear, nothing like some of my friends newer manual cars.

Oh man...just wait until you have change the fuel filter on that Backspace, I had to do one once and it was a pain in the ass!

Fuel filter? that's like what, 4 screws, and maybe 2 clamps in a relatively easy to reach spot? Granted, it's probably more of a hassle then most other cars out there, but I'm so used to bending like a contortionist to work under the dash and deep in the engine bay I'm pretty used to it.

I had to replace the supercharger in that cramped little engine bay, that was a pain in the ass.

Did you own an MK1 (sc?) or were you helping someone?
