Straight Line Speed / Gear Changes

I am new to Forza from GT and have a seemingly simple question, and it may have more to do with my steering wheel than the game.
In rivals challenges, mainly near the top of leaderboards (under 500-1000), i have noticed certain rivals seem to have seemless gear changes, and i am losing a lot of straight line speed which i have to then make up in the corners. I am changing gears at the correct times, however it looks as though they don't change gears at all.
Does this come from utilizing a rig with a clutch, or is this a setting with the game?
I am using a CSR Elite with paddles and Clubsport pedals (with clutch). I have not really messed with the in game settings for this game, so i'm sure there are settings i have missed.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Users of the "Manual w/Clutch" option can take advantage of an exploit where you flat-shift as quickly as possible with no penalty. Both controller users and wheel users can do it. If you're using "Manual w/Clutch" then you can flat-shift too, or rest easy knowing you drive more realistically. :)

or rest easy knowing you drive more realistically. :)

You're actually saying people are losing sleep or have a guilty conscience because they flat shift? Is this along the same lines as gloating and being all high and mighty because you don't use any assists?

...what?

He wondered why others were mysteriously faster. If he doesn't want to flat shift -- and "do" or "don't" are really the only options -- at least now he'll know how they're doing it. And in a world with clutch wear, flat-shifting is possible but not exactly advisable to do all day, err'day. Which makes smooth shifting a bit more realistic.

So he can flat-shift, or just enjoy the game as he has been already.

Thanks for the tip, I see the option now. As you say, I think I will stay with playing the game the way I am with more of a challenge to catch people in the corners. Changing gears with paddles and a clutch just doesn't feel right.

on another note, I heard the updated firmware for csr wheels includes an auto-clutch feature to eliminate the gains made by shifting in this manner. I might try out once it comes out of beta. Cheers
