A woman in Belgium survived a massive crash on the highway after attempting to cross from the fast lane to an exit and smashing straight into traffic.

The accident happened near the town of Aalter in the East Flanders province and the driver was immediately rushed to hospital with apparent life threatening injuries.

It turns out she only suffered two broken vertebra and a pulverized hand, which is quite unbelievable after seeing the footage and the car wreckage.

Dashcam video of the crash.
Crash happens at 14s or so.

She deserves to have her license taken away from her
Cutting against 3 lanes and driving into the off ramp blindly.

Mountains out of molehills, guys.

This lady was damn reckless and that's a damn nasty accident. Jesus.

The sad thing is that it is fairly common to witness reckless attitudes just like this one on the roads, on a daily basis.

Only pure luck decides that just a small percentage of those turn into nasty accidents (like this one).

Was anyone else injured? That's what I care about a lot more than the Darwin Award candidate right now.

I honestly can't grasp how she is still alive after that. If the impact didn't kill her, you'd think that being crushed into that scrap metal that was once a Ford Focus would have been it for her.

Is the car left-hand drive?

I was thinking the same thing. Amazing she survived.
Yes, Belgium is left hand drive. Would've been worse on the right.
Pretty sure she would not have survived if she was on the right hand side. If you watch the video again in slow motion, that right side is fully caved in instantly. Half of her body would have been in the back seat, the other half under the dash.

Yes exactly. If there was a passenger with her, they would've been killed. There's no mention of a passenger so I assume there wasn't one, fortunately.

Hey, instead of blaming her, did anyone think why trucks are allowed to have such unsafe trailers on the road? That was a total failure of the crash bar that's supposed to be behind all trucks like that.

The Sharif don't like it.

It did seem to crumple very easily.

The trailer looks to be a low-deck one (a continental Europe thing) or at least a bit lower than standard trailers. Which in this case, with the floor of the trailer hitting the car at a lower point, is probably better.

The crash bar works perfectly. It crumpled and prevented the car from diving under the trailer. It supposed to do that. If it's rigid the Focus would have been a even smaller package.

But the trailer still went into the greenhouse. That's not exactly safe. They shouldn't give like that.

She did 70mph+ at the time impact. That's 1150kg of Focus slamming into it. It needs to be ridiculous thick steel to catch it without crumbling.

My dad once had somebody slamming into the back of his trailer. The guy hit the back so hard that his Golf 4 ripped the back 2 axes from underneath the trailer. People need to learn how to drive. Safety gear can only do so much without being ridiculously over engineered.

True. Still, these things should be designed for the most outrageously bad drivers.
