The 1st generation Subaru Forester was a wagon nicknamed in the North American Media as "The Sport Utility Wagon" for being as rugged as a SUV but compliant as a car. The Japanese-spec (or JDM) Forester was released in 1997 and is the first of many emerging crossovers of the era.
Powered by a 2.0L turbocharged Boxer engine, this was quite quick off the line for a boxy 5-door wagon.
