After all this time ive finally had a go at the SF races, not a fan of F1 type xars so new to me.
I understand the overtake button but when is it best to use it? I was expecting it to be a bit like a nitrous boost but doesnt seem to be.

I use it if I am close to another car ahead of me, but not quite in their slipstream. I'll hit the overtake to get into their slipstream and then stop using it. From there, the slipstream helps me increase speeds and eventually overtake the AI car either on the brakes into the next corner, or on corner exit.

For me only ever use it in 6th gear to help push me through that higher rev range and gain an extra 20kph or so (like the last weekly race)
Additional power is proportionally less useful the faster you go. The power required to increase speed increases by a cube of the increase in speed - or, very simply, if you want to double your speed you'll need eight times the power.

An SF car's overtake button increases engine power by 5% - going from about 650hp to about 680hp. If you're already at top speed as limited by the car's aerodynamics - let's say 300km/h - that will give you a cube root of 5% increase in speed, or about 1.6%. This increases your speed to 305km/h.

Instead you want to use that boost at lower speeds, for acceleration. I prefer to use it to get through fourth gear - once the car's straightened up and there's less risk of wheelspin - in races against the AI like the Weekly Challenge event last week. The way @Tommy_D describes is also good.
