Should we all turn off our mics before race start?

In my opinion all races should be on race tires and up to the driver on which tires they want to run, unless we're doing a low hp race. Then Sports tires are fine. Race softs don't give an advantage to one person over another. It just makes the racing more enjoyable, with out worrying about how sharp your ice skates are...Just my 2 cents

I like all types of tires, even comfort softs. Lots of people like to do racing tires with racing cars and sports tires with regular cars. But I've raced a few times on comfort softs and it is a real educational experience for me. Taught me better throttle control and now I only spin on exits about 50% of time as opposed to 95% of time. Ha.

Once I raced Nascars on Deep Forest with sports soft. That was fun. I highly recommend it.

Beyond a certain power level, even racing tires can be overwhelmed.

So we are driving on crap tires because one person enjoys them? Maybe we could put the tires up for a vote as well. I vote race soft.

I'm kinda torn on this subject. The "gt purist" in me wants only sports tires on street cars and race tires for race cars. But my "inner gamer" lol, wants racing softs on everything.

I tried some comfort soft racing one night at 450pp. I couldn't do it. I left the room before the race started and just watched.

I'll try these cars on SS tonight. Trial Mountain has some wacky stretches especially that first section hit at full speed after the straight.

Well, crap is subjective. The forums is filled with people who diss racing soft and people who diss any other tires.

By the way, I think DJ mentioned that itoss suggested this event (if I did, I do not remember). So I guess 2 people enjoy driving on crap tires? Ha.

Actually, I think this series has always had varying tires. DJ likes to mix it up by pairing fast cars with high grip tires and so forth. I personally like the variety of cars and tires.

From what I have always heard is that this league was all about fun and setting itself apart from all the other leagues who are so serious about rules and regulations. Nothing fun at all with having to struggle at every turn on sub par tires. Put on the grip and let'em rip.

I agree with running sports tires on street cars. But when you start taking weight out, adding racing components (suspension, drive train etc.) and adding hp and ground effects & spoilers, your essentially building a race car.
I'm a big fan of "grip & rip"

Well, I'm not as good so I struggle at every turn on every kind of tires. It is just a matter of degree when/where the limits of adhesion is for me.

My suggestion was non tuner or race car roadsters with 500pp and sports soft, but I 'd definitely vote for racing soft ,because its alot more fun when your car sticks to road then be sliding all over the place.

Definitely more fun to see how FAST you can go, not how SLOW you can go.

I think you put this up for vote before you raced much on racing softs.

My vote is for race softs. It will definately take the stress down a notch for me on this track

What's realistic is that if I had enough money for a sports car, more for race association membership, and even more for track fee's I better buy racing tires. Instead I'm sitting in my living room with a little toy steering wheel.

Wow, I've missed quite a discussion while I was on my father's day weekend bender!

Just to set things straight, I enjoy switching up the tire compounds. In general I try to limit lower HP cars to Sports Softs and Higher HP cars to Race Hard. In extreme cases, such as actual race cars like GT500, I opt for Race Softs.

I have a few reasons why I like to do this and I have no problem outlining them for you guys.

  1. I feel that Race Soft tires are overkill on a good chunk of the cars we race.
  2. I feel using different compounds adds unique challenges to an event. I always try to make the event challenging and fun and sometimes the line is very fine.
  3. I feel that my sense of verisimilitude is heightened when using tires that the real life cars would probably or actually use.
  4. I feel that using different compounds actually helps a lot of gamers learn how to drive better. I know I've become a better racer since I started this series and I feel the different compounds have helped.
  5. This league is all about variety. You can jump into any old open lobby and know that most of the races will be using Race Softs. Participating in this league means you must be prepared for a different scenario every week.

Anyway those are my 2cents on the subject. As for this weeks race, ITOSS has said he prefer's Race Softs so its no big deal to switch. In the future though, make sure to let me know during voting if you want to change a suggestion.

And for a quick heads up, please be aware that we will most likely not be using Race Softs every week. If that doesn't fit what you're looking for I'm sure you can find another group that will fit what you want better and I apologize for not being able to meet your needs.

Another thing to remember guys is the goal of this group is fun and respect. Arguing whether certain tires are "crap" or whose style of play is more fun or better is a pointless waste of time that detracts from our goals. I'm sure you guys can find a much better thread to argue about stuff like that somewhere :sly:

When I voice my opinion I do not set out to offend anyone, nor do I avoid it as well. I call it the way I see it, which is what I did today, and will probably do so again in the future. Just a heads up.

Very well put, DJ. This is why the Super Tuner Car Championship is my league of choice! You seem to have recovered nicely from your weekend bender.

I'm sorry if you feel like I was singling you out dangit. That wasn't my intention and I know I can count on you to give me an honest opinion. My post was intended for the group and any stragglers that might wander in and look around rather than one specific person.

Thanks for the heads up.

Barbecuing in 100 degree heat while sipping on whiskey and beer all weekend has left me feeling pretty burnt all day today...:ill:

LOL how was everybody's weekend BTW?

Haha JT. You ever look into karts? I've thought about it but can't justify the price.

I can't get fast wheels. I'll just hurt myself. I go 40 on my road bike propelled by my legs. Downhill is faster by 10 to 15%. I'm not scared either, that equals danger. Add petrol to my diet, no bueno.

Let's just keep it sports softs then and see what happens. The above argument leads to that direction. I want to race either way. Good points DJ.

Race Softs will be used this week. I was just offering my opinion on the subject. It should be a fun and challenging race. I'm going Honda, championship white!

I don't like racing on the sports softs, but as long as everyone is doing it, it really doesn't matter.:indiff:

The thing i hate is seeing people posting that they use them for realism, or because that's what the real car uses. My friends and I used to do a LOT of street racing back when I was younger and it is almost impossible to make a car slide around like it does in this game with anything less than racing hard tires. We were running the original bias ply tires on our chevelles, camaros, mustangs, etc., and they stuck much better than any sports soft tires in this game. Maybe if we had tried runnning them with 90psi of air they might have resembled the sports soft ties in GT5.

I think I'm going Honda also. Middle of the pack black. Subject to change.

I know I've joined the debate late but just my 2 pence... I don't think the realism of tyres in the game is particularly great, I generally prefer racing softs but any tyre you choose will have its limits and we all try to push them to it, only really low HP cars require less than racing otherwise they stick too much.

That said I do quite like the fact that this league mixes things up and really if everyone is forced to take the same tyres what does it matter as we're all in the same boat

I still can't choose between the cars, the beemer sticks a little better but it's power to weight is a bit less, I guess if we're going sticky tyres I'll need to re-test them both anyway.

can we get a defined list of S2000's to choose from or are we saying premium models only!? What about GT1 Turbo? some of the S2000 choices might make the Z4 redundant, I wouldn't like to see an S2000 vs Z4 with no Z4's present...

I used to own a 2003 S2k. The early models (AP1) had no traction control and had very neutral handling, almost loose. Later models had some understeer dialed in allowing a novice to push harder and safer. I loved the instant steering response of my car and stiff suspension. Spent some time at VIR's Patriot Course flinging that car around. What a blast!

So much has been discussed on this forum on what tires correlate to real life compounds with most opinions being the SS tires are what Time Attack/Tuner Challenge type cars would use. Check out the tires used on the Japanese Best Motoring videos at Tsukuba. They have tread.

I think the online physics throw the tire realism out the window personally. That's been my biggest challenge in GT5. Years of offline A-Spec and then trying to adjust to the slicker online surface has been quite the learning curve.

the GT1 Turbo is a Tuner car and therefore not eligible. Anything that says, Mugen, Amuse, HKS and so on are tuner cars and not eligible.

The following cars are eligible:

  • Honda S2000 '03
  • Honda S2000 '06

  • Honda S2000 (US) '99
  • Honda S2000 (US) '01
  • Honda S2000 (US) '04

  • Honda S2000 Type V '00
  • Honda S2000 Type V '01
  • Honda S2000 Type V '03
