Tell us about your worst wreck

I've got two good ones...
First one, It was a nice Friday mid-afternoon, I had no homework, (a big feat in college, for me), the day was beautiful and all of my friends were gone for the weekend. What better to do than have a nice 6 hour drive home in my baby, hang out and drive back late Sunday night. Well, I got about 2 hours into my trip and was clipping along at a decent 85mph when I crested, one of a series of rolling hills. (this is on a highway) Well, to my dismay, traffic was STOPPED. I immediatly braced myself and started pumping the brakes hard. Managed to stop about 1 foot from the rear bumper of whatever was in front of me. I was extreemly happy, and all without locking up the tires. I was still braced hard against the wheel and brakes when I glanced in my rearview mirror... 9 cars were comming at me in every different direction you could possibly think of!!!!!! I braced harder in that instant and took impact, after impact after impact, pushing me into that car I had done so well to avoid hitting. Horrible thing to be sitting in your small car, (92 MX3 GS), wondering when the cars are going to stop sliding up on your rear. Turns out somebody was doing about 95 in a corolla, back over one of the other crests and rearended a car doing like 45, (it was a construction zone kind of deal, but the lights weren't flashing on the signs). All of this chain reactioned through 9 cars and up to me, who was at the end of stopped traffic, where the lanes went from 2-1. I got hit in the left-rear-side by a new crown vic doing about 40, he got hit by the car behind and so on. To make that one worse, the pileup caused a panic attack behind it and caused a seperate 5 car pileup! What was amazing was that nobody was hurt. cars and trucks had their whole front ends ripped off, but nobody was hurt. My car was mainly damaged in the left rear, up to the door. Suspension and frame damage. After Allstate found my car, (they lost it for 2 weeks!!!!!!), they finally wrote it off and gave me a check for another just like it. If anybodies still reading, here's my second wreck ;) (oh yeah, all of it got blamed on the corolla, which incidently had just been completely re-built from another totalling wreck. it had no front end this time)

So it took me about 2 months of being without a car to find another MX3 GS auto with a sunroof, (physical reasons), not an easy thing to do on the east coast of the states. I'm home for my first summer off from college, (usually work for the college), and have followed my jeeper buddies up a mountain behind the house, where we go 4-wheelin. (I used to follow them up to where the gravel road stopped and the "trail" began) Well, we had a great time ontop of the mountain that night, drove back out and I got back in my beloved MX3. We head back down the mountain, me following a decent distance behind because of the dust trail from the dry gravel. Well, I come around a very slight left hand bend and a deer jumps up the bank at me. I hit it and it sends my car into a gentle drift, (I"m going about 25mph upon impact), towards the side of the road where there is no guardrail and the mountain drops off steeply, for a good distance. I quickly counter it and start sliding the opposite direction. I almost have it back under control when the bank pops up outta nowhere, down, whack and I'm in the air. I went down in the ditch on the bank-side, smacked the only rock there was with my passenger front corner, it caught me, flipped me over and spun me half way around! That was a heck of a ride in an MX3!! I set there for a few seconds and realized what had happened, (windshield shattered, roof caved, no side glass). I popped my belts, fell a little bit, jammed the door open and drug myself out, lights still on, stereo still thumpin. A few minutes later a big loud pickup comes up. a bunch of good ole' boys were having a bachelors party down the mountain and saw me wreck. They looked at me, loocked at my car and said, "I bet we can flip it back over!". I was like, Ok?! About 5 of them got together on one side and heaved on it, BAM, it was back upright. Then they kicked the windshield out, threw my flat spare tire on her and 3 of em piled in with me to make sure I got it home safe, stereo cranked, no glass, crushed roof and a flat spare tire, :D We got to the bottom of the mountain and it turned to asphalt, the flat spare disentigrated immediatly and I was running rim to pavement, :D . And there was a stopsign, that I of course stopped for. (that was fun trying to get going again!) So I drove it home and parked it in front of my yard. She's still parked there, I didn't turn it in on my insurance because I have good rates and I didn't want to screw myself out of being able to drive somthing decent. I worked the rest of the summer, cashed some stock, sold some parts and other stuff and found myself my dream MX3, (in stock form anyways), an SE, (which comes stock with all the options, I wanted v6, leather and it was an auto-physical reasons), for a price I could handle. So once again, after not having a car for a few months, I was back in an MX3, and one with what I wanted and in much better shape :D (the one that flipped was burning oil like a mo-fo) Oh, and the best part is all I got was a scrape on my elbow, about an inch long, no blood even! What amazed me about that wreck was there was NO frame damage. Just a popped strut and 7k in bodywork. And that is a long winded account for my two bad wrecks ;) (sorry for the length, if anybody made it this far!)
peace,

~I am attaching two pics. the first is the one that got rearended, it doesn't look that bad, but that's because it's pretty dark..

Well, I've had one wreck...

I was at an intersection, I had a stop sign (which I stopped for) and was waiting for this one car to come through so I could go. I needed to go right after this car was through otherwise I wouldn't have made it in between the next car. I got a little anxious and went a little too soon. Hit the back end of the car that I was waiting for.

They did a little swerving on the road, but they were okay. Just dented the side of their car. My car the whole front bumper fell off and needed that replaced. No ticket, even though it was my fault. The cop was really cool. The people I hit were cool too. They understood that $#!t happens. I just hope I'm the same way when some punk kid hits me someday

i had just finished cleaning up and detailing every inch on my 1991 sentra when i decided to go out and show her off around town. as i was driving past the taco bell (going north) a person pulled out of the parking lot (turning to go the opposite way aka south) and didn't even notice me. his impact started at my front wheel and went all the way to my rear wheel on the passenger side before knocking me into a 180 (i was knocked out for a couple seconds i think) and spinning through oncoming traffic. i ended up spinning around and hitting the curb which stopped me. i then realized what had happened and got out. his car had $400 worth of damage on it, mine had $6100 and was totalled.

Define "wreck". The only time a car I drove was damaged was when I hit that deer (mentioned somewhere crossthread) doing about 75 mph. No major damage (the windshield was cracked, bent metal and such), but the car was written off (cheap as it was).

Once I've ended up in a ditch (speed: 10 mph or so) due to lousy front tyres and incredibly slippery conditions. No damage, except for my ego. I've also spun going 50 mph in 8 inches of snow, but managed to stay on the road. (I haven't been quite as adventurous after that. At least not in a FR car.:)) Still, once in a ditch, one spin in all the winters isn't bad, and the "ditching" wasn't arguably my fault (as it wasn't my car).

I think I've been worried about someone's driving style once. This guy insisted on doing 80 mph in a 50 mph zone, the car had summer tires, and the temperature was below freezing, so there were spots of ice. He also had only just received his licence. Can you say "accident waiting to happen"? We did get home in one piece, though.

dang Mason, looks like you have bad luck. You killed 2 mazdas.....you need to be put in jail. ;) :P

Hello...

For any time, I had great fortune !

We had to this time a car whif a plugable trailer coupling .

I must to carry a lot of steel channel .
A other workman from us, has trailed the trailer.

Im check the trailer coupling , but Im only control the position of the ball and drive away !

Ther are no 10 min. bygone, as all at once ,
near the midle of a bridge , the trailer to loosen from my Car and slow-going to the left side .

Than a pat and the trailer shoot down undamped ,
through the oncoming traffic , to burst the Bridge-railing and fallen to the Train rails .

I cant do anything !

But ther isn't a other car damaged !!!
That's great fortune .

That's I'm never forget !

So long
Werner

Ps. :
I hope, You can understand it, than my English is not the best.

Well, it isn't really anything bad, but I just bashed up my car today. It was a little wet and I came around a corner that's slick when it's dry and was lucky to only smack my own car into a cement retaining wall without taking a few more with me. I haven't gotten it assesed, but I'm guessing it's going to be about $800 to fix.

Blah ... I made a bad day really bad. That was the most expensive lunch I've had in a while.

Sorry to hear that LM! Maybe playing some GT3 will lift your spirits! :D

My story is this:

One day after football practice, my best friend and I are driving on a dirt road to a teammates house in his father's fairly new Chevy S10. Apparently I made some stupid jesture that startled him, jerking the wheel left a little. At this time we're doing about 50 mph and so upon correcting back to the right, the left front tire hits a rather small (I thought) pothole which sends us rolling. We rolled the truck about 3 times and came to a stop in a ditch upside down with the engine still running and the smell of gass leaking (he couldn't shut it off for some reason). I was able to undo my seatbelt but my friend could not and was all panicky so I slide out from where the window used to be and went around to help him out. By the time I got around to the other side he had completely tripped out and had squeezed himself out of the seatbelt. Anyhow, no, it didn't blow up or anything because we were able to shut if off but the amazing thing is we were not injured at all! I had a scrape or two but that may have been from getting out... As soon as he was out I just started laughing, man that was a fun ride!

Did we learn a lesson? Sure, don't overcorrect on a dirt road and surely don't overcorrect into a pothole!

Nuts - sorry to hear that dude. Was the damage just cosmetic, or were any mechanicals involved as well?

Sorry to hear it, Loud. Car mishaps always bite the big one. Hope you got insurance! Sorry to be the Angel of Death, but often repairs are more expensive than they might seem at first blush. :nervous:

Well, I smacked it on the front right and messed up a tire on the curb. I replaced that immediately so I could get back to work and then home at night. The steering wheel felt rather strange so there has to be something wrong there too, but I don't know what it is. I guess it's mostly cosmetic. I'll need a new hood, front right pannel, bumber, all the lights that go over there, and front air dam. Luckily I didn't wrap the front around and mess up the other side.

I honestly have no idea what happened because it happened really fast. I do remember thinking, "****, glad I'm not going fast enought to launch myself over the rail of this bridge ..." *BAM* "... onto the train tracks below."

Strange-feeling steering wheel = suspension alignment.

Took the words out of my mouth - hopefully it's just the wheel, and the actual bits (ah, the joy of front drive) holding the wheel on, steering it and driving it aren't bent.

That's what I'm thinking. I hope I wasn't making it worse by driving 35 miles home on it at 65 miles per hour.

Prior to today I had about $800 in various "My car is old and needs repairs" fixup work I wanted to do. I think maybe I just trippled that number.

SON OF A ...

I went to dinner tonight with one of my old roommates. He said, "Damnit dude, you gotta stop doing this ****." I flipped him the bird and made him buy dinner.

Well, probably no worse than...

Nah - you're probably shaken enough already without me taking cheap shots at you.

Actually I'm not doing to bad. I went over to a friend's house with a bunch of people and let them all make fun of me for a while. It was calming, really.

Tomorrow morning I'll take it to the shop to see what they think. That'll pretty much ruin another day for me.

Are Honda parts the nightmare story they are here?

Actually, no. Hondas (especially Accords of the early `90s) are EXTREAMLY common. I would guess my model of Accord is in the top 10 most popular owned cars in the United States. That should help things a bit.

~LoudMusic

Oh that's right - forgot it was the top selling car (not vehicle) for a while there.

This was a source of some strain between my partner and I during the car selection process early last year.

The Accord is pushed as a bit of a 'prestige' vehicle in Australia (Honda here seem to think they have some kind of cachet) and is priced accordingly (outrageously so, in my opinion - why on earth someone would buy an Accord when they could have a better built, better featured and dynamically far superior Subaru Liberty/Legacy for less money is totally beyond me).

Knowing that the Accord competes with the Camry in the US (and the Camry is considerably cheaper here - model for model 15% or so), I set the stipulation that if we were to test the Accord we must also test drive the Camry - and we all know the image of those things.

No deal. Mission accomplished.
