Test Drive: Were it all began!

I think quite alot of people know lots about TDU, but what I dont think so many people know is how it all began. So I thought that I would try to bring as much light to this subject as I can!

Test Drive 1- 1987

This video is Test Drive 1 on the Commodore 64!

The first ever Test Drive game was launced by Accolade in 1987. The aim of the game was simple. First choose a car out of the five in the game. You could choose from a Ferrari Testarossa, Lotus Turbo Esprit, Porsche 911 Turbo, Lamborghini Countach and a Chevrolet Corvete C4. You would then have to race up a cliffside highway within the given time limit. If the player did this while succesfully avoiding crashing into all tracfic, getting arrested by the police, and falling of the side of the road. This was made harder by the fact that there was no guardrail to stop this from happening. If you managed to get to the end succesfully, you got to keep the car for free! Test Drive was released in 1987 for DOS, the Atari ST and Commodore 64. The game was the first real racing game for DOS. In 1988 it was released for the Apple II and Amiga.

The Duel: Test Drive 2- 1989

This is The Duel: Test Drive 2 on Commodore 64!

In the sequel, you did'nt just have to run from the police, and get to the finish line within a time limit, you had to beat an opponent to the finish line aswell. Test Drive 1 only included one sceneray, Brown Rocky cliff, but Test Drive 2 had many types of scenery! It also includes more cars if you count the add-on's. Without the add-on's, you could only chose from the Ferrari F40, and the Porsche 959. The Muscle car add-on's included the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, 1968 Shelby GT500, 1967 Pontiac GTO, 1969 COPO 9560 ZL-1 Camaro and a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. The Supercar add-on's included the 1988 Lotus Turbo Esprit, Ferrari Testarossa, Porsche 911 RUF, 1988 Lamborghini Countach 5000S and a 1989 Corvette ZR1.

Test Drive 3- The Passion- 1990

This is a video of gameplay from Test Drive 3!
And this is a video of a glitch were a stationwagon gets stuck up the rear of a police car!:lol:

Unlike it's decendents, which were developed by distinctive softwre, Test Drive 3 was devolped completley by Accolade! The enviroment was more advanced. Now, the driver could drive anywhere of road, a concept that was unfountnley not used again in the series untill TDU. Only three cars were featured and they were the Chevrolet CERV III, Lamborghini Diablo, and the Pininfarina Mythos. You could only ever buy the Diablo in the real world, the other two were concept cars. There was a new feature however. The player had the control to be able to select different radio stations to listen to while driving, again a concept that was not repeated untill TDU. Game critics panned the game because it was notorious for being unrealistic and often uncontrollable. TD3 was only released on the PC; there were no other platform conversions. There was one add-on released, titled Road & Car. It added two cars: the Acura NSX and Dodge Stealth, and a New England course: Cape Cod to Niagara.

There you go. That is the history of the first 3 test drive games. I will add some others later. Hope you enjoyed reading!

Skid - That post deserves some serious +Reps !... Very well done 👍

I remember playing TD1 on the C64 - Hard to believe that Accolade managed to get the engine sounds "righter" than they did with GT4 ;-) But man, I was ******* 14 years old.. I had never experienced anything being just remotely as cool as TD... Good times indeed...

And Skid, that's Commodore, not Commadore ;-) - Doesn´t make it less of a post still !....

Thankyou for pointing out Commodore thing. I will correct that now!

P.S: Thanks for the positive comment!

+rep for post #1!

Very nice, I remember playing Test Drive 2 on my C64. The graphics are a catasthophe for todays standards, but still, this was a lot of fun. Additionally, the cockpits of the cars, the working dials and the gearchange stuff made the game kind of realistic. 👍

I remember TD3 very well. It was on a computer that was given to us back in 1994. I could never get the right answer for the questions that were asked so I only ever got to play for 2 minutes at a time. It was fun, though, to see how far I could go in that time and in any direction.

Does anyone here remember Stunts, another Accolade game? You could create insane courses and drive different vehicles through them. The only vehicle I can really remember is the Hummer. I never particularly cared for the game, but it was ok nonetheless.

I owned "4D sports driving" for my Amiga, which is pretty much the same concept. Loads of fun! :dopey:

wow big thanks for all that TD content!! I knew there were other TD games earlier but i never saw game footage of it. When was TD6 released? 2000?

Man oh man the memorys. I think the first TD game I played was TD5. TD6 was my favorite. Cant remember why since its been so long since I last played it. Hmmmm....I should look it up on Ebay to see what I can find. ;)

Ah yes, I remember the original Test Drive. We drove the Ferrari almost exclusively.

Looking at that video, in-car view and crash damage. PD should take note.

never played any of the originals as far as I can remember, I owned 4 and 5 back when they were new and I just recently purchased 6 (3.99 very used) to play on my ps3 and its still fun... I remember a game similar to the original TDs that had a Mercedes race car in it and is my first memory of a driving game. Anyone know what it might be?

I've played most of the older Test Drive games. Most were bad btw.

Test Drive 2 and 3 were so-so OK. It got boring after a while, but it was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Test Drive 4 I really liked, it had american muscle cars on top of Japanese and european exotic cars and it had really nice graphics (3dfx Glide).

Test Drive 5 was not much improvement over 4, but it was sooo much fun in split screen multiplayer. I remember playing countless times split screen against my dad.

Test Drive 6 was awful and bug infested.

Test Drive 7, aka just "Test Drive" was again not that great, fun for a while, but got old fast.

Test Drive Unlimited was pretty good I suppose, but I got tired of the handling rather quickly.

My favorite of them all would have to be Test Drive 4.
