Texting, then assulting ex cop, during movie equals death.

Yeah this threads dead. Now all you guys got are insults.
I thought you were done here 3 posts ago? Your continued posting despite saying you were done is something I perceive to be a threat of great bodily harm, so let me have your address so I can come shoot you. The law says I can.

The law also says that is premeditated murder.
But can it also be classed as self defense?

Let's not forget an innocent bystander was shot! Reeves hit the wife in the hand as she held her hand up in self defense!!

That's murder and attempted murder by my count. All started by Reeves.

Your an idiot if you think the younger guy was just going to throw the popcorn.

What anyone thinks happened/will happen is irrelevant in the court system, that is why Casey Anthony, OJ, Zimmerman and a bunch of other people have gotten off despite what people think happened.

Have any statistics to back that up? As of 2009, the total number of murders committed in the US by licensed concealed carry personnel are practically negligible.

You realize that in America, we don't just go around street corners handing Glocks out to people. You have to meet some pretty tight requirements just to purchase a firearm; and even more to get a concealed carry license. These are not the people who are committing crimes. Crimes are committed by criminals and they will find a way to get a gun no matter what the laws are.

If you call over 150 lives "practically negligible". It is quite sad to see a person treat human lives as statistics and nothing more.

And that is just permit Firearm holders, lets go a little deeper into gun culture and get some real numbers up.

188 is what i totaled.

Statistics may be impersonal, but it points to the uncomfortable fact that you are more likely to get killed by a licensed driver than you are by a licensed firearm holder.

It's 85. And that number isn't just 2009. It's totalled up to 2009 - from 1994 when the first CCW permits were awarded.

More people die annually from being unjustifiably shot by policemen - the guys you say should be armed - by a factor of about five. More people die annually from falling over their underpants while putting them on/taking them off.

Not really relevant:

Casey Anthony:

Got off because the prosecution sought a crime that they couldn't prove. The prosecution bungled the case by not instead going for a lesser charge for which the evidence was abundant. This was straight up someone not doing their job well. For the record, something similar is going on for the Aurora Theater shooter - who was willing to plead guilty for life in prison. Prosecution said "NO! We want you to be executed and we will spend gazillions of dollars in court so that we can" and so he might walk. People say capital punishment doesn't work, or costs extra, and the aurora case might get thrown around as an example of capital punishment costing more than it saves. But capital punishment did work - it got him to offer a plea bargain for life in prison without a trial! And for some reason the prosecution didn't take it. Insane. Now there will be a spectacle and another opportunity for Americans to lose faith in their justice system.

OJ:

This was a case of a biased jury and some more bungling by the prosecution. You never know what you're going to get with a jury, and OJ got a good one (thanks to his defense team). He also was handed some gifts by the prosecution.

Zimmerman:

For Zimmerman it was a case of what the prosecution couldn't prove - and they couldn't prove that he was lying. His story was consistent with all of the evidence put forward. The prosecution painted an alternative picture that could have also fit (most) of the facts, but they couldn't prove it. We don't put people in jail for what we can't prove in America. He had a story, it fit the facts, and it was within the law. Zimmerman was a case of the justice system doing what it should do - allowing a guy to walk because the proof that he was guilty didn't exist.

I'd rather have 150 deaths over a span of 10 years than 32,000 deaths a year (current gun homicide rate).

You guys really do not see the direct correlation between gun culture and the massive gun murder rate.

I'm not talking about permit holders perse, I'm talking about American "gun culture" and the general attitude of it is ok to kill somebody if they attack you. Especially someone throwing popcorn.... that is just... I really don't know what to say.. I just cannot believe people actually have this attitude and try to justify it. And this attitude is almost exlcusive to one country in the world, you know something is very wrong when that happens.

If you think the average American thinks it is ok to kill because someone throws popcorn then it isn't the Americans who just don't get it, it's you.

There isn't one.

Unless you have access to some statistics that no-one else has.

Not sure if trolling, or completely blind to logic and facts...

Replace the words "gun culture" with "gang violence" and you're on to something except for the one country in the world bit.

Get the idea out of your head that it's the NRA and Bubba's ranch that causes the shocking statistics. It just isn't true on a statistical level when you're talking about a country of 300 million people.

Ok Im done here. All you guys can come up with now is stupid hypotheticals that have absolutely nothing to do with the case. Just remember the question is weather or not it was reasonable for the old man to fear for his safety.
The only one coming up with stupid theories is you & your misinterpretation of the law. Take this thread as a sign that you are intended for becoming anything but a lawyer.
Yeah this threads dead. Now all you guys got are insults.
Says the guy who called everyone idiots for not agreeing with his view.
Your an idiot if you think the younger guy was just going to throw the popcorn. Its not the act of throwing the popcorn, but how he threw it. The younger guy was trying to hurt the older man. If he wasn't trying to hurt the old man and just shut him up he could of tossed it from his seat. He didn't he got up stood over the man and side armed as hard as he could in to his face from a foot away. Again he was trying to hurt the old guy and got his self shot for it.

Being in the Navy, if I were to shoot some arsehole for walking up to me and throwing a bag of popcorn at my face while I was standing pier sentry watch, I'd be in deep 🤬 since it defintely doesn't come close to meeting the military's criteria for the use of deadly force.

Once you've been hit in the face with a bag of buttery goodness, it's hard to mistake as being anything else. So unless the douchebag texter showed any life-threatening behavior after he threw the popcorn, such as pulling out an actual weapon and appearing to have the intent to use it, then this shooting is absolutely in no way justifiable as self defense.

Just sayin'.

An ex-cop accused of fatally shooting a moviegoer for texting in the cinema was himself sending a text just minutes before opening fire.

Curtis Reeves texted his son Matthew at 1.04pm to say he was seated for the 1.20pm screening of 'Lone Survivor', court documents reveal.

Reeves, 71, is accused of second-degree murder for later shooting 43-year-old father Chad Oulson in a Florida movie theatre in January after a dispute about his phone use.

Matthew Reeves told officers his father texted him to tell him he was seated in the Wesley Chapel theatre.

Reeves was sitting in the darkened cinema when his son entered to find where his parent was seated.

At that moment the 71-year-old opened fire at Mr Oulson, shooting him in the chest and also injuring the victim's wife Nicole, who was shot in the finger.

"Matthew said he did not see the shot directly, but the noise and light drew his attention to the top row of seats," Pasco County Sheriff's detective Aaron Smith wrote in documents cited by the New York Daily News.

Reeves has claimed he shot Mr Oulson in self-defence after his victim attacked him and hit him in the face.

Video surveillance images from inside the cinema reportedly show Mr Oulson and Reeves in a heated confrontation and the frantic scene after the shooting.

Hypocritical old man.

Hypocritical old man.
I don't see how. He shot someone for assaulting him after he confronted him over using his phone during the film. Last I checked, 1.04pm was before 1.20pm, so Mr. Reeves was using his own phone before the film.

Last I checked, previews are not the film so Oulson was also using his phone before the film.
In that case, fair enough.

Was it before or after the "turn your mobile phone off" ident?

The previews were rolling they old man said turn off your phone and then he got shot.

Previews are normally 5minutes or so long
Since most are buy food and drinks, up coming movie previews and some ads.

And also a "turn your mobile phone off" ident. Usually after the adverts and before the trailers.

That's more to make sure you're not filming bits you like, as if they give a crap about you enjoying the film once you've visited the concession :D
