Some of you may remember from my birthday thread last year that one of my presents was a track day in which I would get to drive four supercars. Well, earlier this week I finally cashed in on it and boy was it a good day.

The location was a small private track in Oxfordshire. No where near a full size race track but had some challenging corners and a 100mph straight where we could open the cars up a bit. A little screenie from google maps below:

It was the perfect day for it. The sun was shining and I'd taken the rest of the week off work so I was feeling pretty good.

Five of us went up. Two driving, me and my sisters boyfriend Matt. My dad, my sister and Vic (the missus) came along as spectators. After a quick sandwich at a nearby cafe we headed up to the track to check out our toys for the day.

After a short breifing, we head out to have our first run.

Yes, I was walking in slow motion, I am that cool!

First car for me was a Porsche 911 GT3. I tell you, I drove... slow!

It was my first ever go on a track. I wanted to be qucik, but I also didn't want to run out of talent and look like a schmuck so I tippytoed round for the first couple of laps. Partly to get to know the track and partly becasue in the breifing, they made special mention to this car. "Be very careful" they said. This car has no ABS, no stability control and no traction control. "If you get a bit throttle happy out of a corner, you'll be facing the wrong way before you know it"! So I pootled around like an old man and just when I was starting to get comfortable and open it up a bit, my go was over and I had to pull in to the pits :(. No matter, I still had three other cars to drive!!

Next up was an Aston V8 Vantage.

Before you ask, yes the James Bond theme was playing in my head the whole way round. It just so happened that the sun was shining very brightly at this point in the day so I kept my shades on. I couldn't have looked cooler!! :P

The car was a lot easier to drive and a lot more comfortable. The interior was gorgeous and although it was the slowest car there, it was the easiest to open up. Flooring along the main straight you don't get much of a sense of speed. There is a loud grumble and you just seem to waft effortlessly to the first corner! This go seemed to be over even quicker than the Porsche. Partly because I was driving faster and partly because now I was used to it and having fun, time just flew.

Third car, and by far my favourite (before and after the day) was a Lamborghini Gallardo! :D

The most poweful car on the day and the one I had been looking forward to the most. It didn't dissapoint. It was as easy to drive as the Aston, as fast as the Porsche and made a better noise than the Ferrari. It felt really sure footed and the grip was immense. It really gave me the confidence to push it quite hard. I glanced 95 on the straight a second or two before the braking zone so im sure I pushed it over 100. The turn in was fantastic and THE NOISE oh god the noise was unbelievable. This was definitely the most fun I've had with my clothes on. Another bonus was that most other guys had real trouble pulling away in this car. They were spluttering and stalling quite often. Not me! I pulled away perfectly everytime and got a "nice one" from the instructor as I did so. I AM A DRIVING GOD!!!

Finally the Ferrari 360.

Although Matt said he really didn't like this one I enjoyed it. It felt a lot lighter than the others and more nimble. Sort of more like a go kart. The only thing I didn't like was the gear change. They said to change gear slowly (im not sure if there was a problem with the gearbox but it was very clunky). Couple this with the fact that when you come off the power and on to the clutch, the revs drop incredibly quickly, then it becomes really hard to shift smoothly as you have to try and bring up the revs a little to match the speed before you release the clutch. After a couple of laps however, I had got used to it and was changing up and down fine. Yup, driving god!

Once the day was done for me and Matt, there was just time for a little treat for Ollie (sis) and Vic (missus). They were each given a ride with a proffessional race driver. I say ride, what I actually mean is two full bore flying laps in an Ariel Atom!

Even though it's a pic, if you listen carefully you can still hear her screaming!

All in all, an awesome day and an awesome birthday present. I'll definitely be doing this again! 👍

Nice present! That looks really fun man! Colour me jealous :) Why do you look guilty in the second to last Ferrari shot

^ He just wanted to be back in the Lamborghini. :D

Hope you had fun dquan! I would have loved to take part in the 1500 BHP experience, but too bad i can't drive yet. :(

The difference in your facial expression from the Gallardo pic to the 360 pic says it all!

I'm in utter jealousy, though. I think most of us dream every single day of having such an experience.

Thanks for sharing this with us with some nice images 👍

Hmm, dunno! By that point I was really into it and was planning on driving the Fezza quite hard. If I screwed up then it didn't matter if they told me I couldn't drive anymore! I had the TCS kick in at one point, it was the only time that day that it did. Although I think it was really conservative, I was not under much throttle at that point and I don't think the wheels were going to spin. Luckily it didn't cut the power to much and only for a breif second.

Yeah, of all the driving pics you can see I enjoyed the Lambo the most. Matt agreed with me on this too, both of us got out of the car with a HUGE grin on our faces!

You can tell by the pics that you enjoyed the Gallardo the most. In terms of driving, there is nothing compared to the experience you feel on a real life road track. I have been doing that for the last 10 years. Which reminds me, I need to get my car back to Grattan for another day or two sometime within the next year. I am glad you finally had a chance to see what its like. Not many get to have that opportunity especially in such exotic cars.

Oh yeah, the noise, the power, everything was brilliat about it.

I might shove this over to the Rumble Strip for a few hours. I wanna show everyone!!

Do they have any local open track days that you can attend? Thats how I got started years ago. Its usually about $100-$150 for an entire day. Even though most people cant physically handle an entire day.

I'm sure there must be loads. I'll have to have a look into it, it's definitely something I'd like to do. I also have to start teaching Vic to drive so she can share the experience!

The best thing to do is to contact the track and see if any local race groups attend on a regular basis. Then contact those groups that race and you will be able to get in cheaper as a group purchase. More members means less $$$ per day. If you can get into a group that runs between 50-100 members you will have a great day. Most groups break the race day up into at least 4 classes depending on experience. If you can get onto the track for an entire day, it will be the time of your life and you will be hooked forever! :) Most dont even require a specific car. Just helmet and basic inspection. You can usually run ANY car you want too. If you are lucky they will allow passengers. Thats the most fun when you have someone with you.

I went from liking you to loathing you faster than the Gallardo can hit 60, Dunc. :P

Your sister (or is that the missus?) does look well and truly petrified.

Looks like all had an awesome time, one I'd love the chance to mimic one day!

/envy
Great pics man, loved the changed in facial expression from car to car.
If I ever see you around Ealing I'll pester you for a ride.

Not really. That was the only area spectators were allowed to stand and you can't see most of the track from there. I do have a vid of Vic going out for her run.

*edit*
And here's me going out in the Fezza followed by Matt in the Porsche. Listen carefully and you'll hear me fluff the gear change! :grumpy:

That looks like awesome fun. I'd love to try that. All I can say is the person or people who chose that gift know how to pick 'em.

What's that purple Ford called again? I know it's not a Cougar. Car in the first clip looked and sounded a little like a RC going off.
Ain't been to Ealing Broadway for ages, is that little computer shop still there? They used to do import stuff, off the Broadway at the top of St Marys road.

Oh the Puma? I didn't even notice it!!!

I think I know the shop you mean. Skillz or something like that. No I think that went years ago. I don't go in to the Broadway much anymore either. Where in London are you?

Puma how could I forget? Heh, it was bugging me.
I'm in Heston, I was on my way to South Ealing but plans changed. Yeah Skillz, shame it closed just like all the other small retailers around here. Used to be a comic shop at the back of Hounslow high street years ago, now it's all restaurants and crap.

Ah right, must be a pretty noisy place to live with all the planes no?

I remember Skillz used to chip consoles. DreamCasts mostly which shows how long ago that shop was open!

Is the track any good? I've actually bought my mum one of their Aston Martin vs Ariel Atom days, I'm hoping she'll enjoy it.

The track is great but being small, it's more of a handling circuit than high speed. Is it at the same place then?

Yes it is, she lives near Cheltenham, so it's nice and close for her to go to. 3 laps driving the Aston and 3 laps passenger ride in the Ariel. Is that the supercharged Atom?

Yeah the 300 with front and rear wings. When ollie had her run the driver cane back saying there was a vibration at the rear. They worked out that a tooth had broken in the gearbox but went out with Vic anyway thinking that if it went, it would be expensive but not dangerous. I'm sure it'll be fixed by the time you get there. I hope your mother has a strong heart, I certainly wouldn't put mine in there but she's probably a lot older than yours!

Well, it was a 50th birthday present, so we'll have to wait and see. She was also given a spa and relaxation treatment day, which I think she may need....
