The fascinating thing about the USA map to me was the midwest. You tend to think of it as being fairly barren and featureless, but because so much of it is farmland rather than wilderness, the human influence of road networks basically make it a wash of colour on that map. So it's only big obstacles like mountain ranges that really curtail road building.
