The biking thread

Yep, not such a smart thing to do :P

looks a damn sight better than the highways here in China. I wouldn't dare ride on them, even if it wasn't prohibited!

Do a full screen, 360 degree pan and tell me you can't picture yourself on this road on a beautiful, sunny, summer evening. There is nothing there but you, wheat, corn and the occasional bird that wants to dive bomb your head.

My bum is getting numb just thinking about it:ouch::sly:

Not even sure I can picture myself cycling along this road:

Hazards can make things a bit more interesting though....

.....that was taken during a 24 hour race.....the roadies had to get over several of those! (it was a teams of 4 event....ride all 7 Stanes and the roads between in under 24 hours)

And whilst trawling old shots I found this:

....a bit of pipe that used to lie at the bottom of the downhill course at Fort William:)

I love those kind of stretches

Down in the dropped handles, gear up and keep that motor going. Love that stuff!

On that note, you guys ever had a small adrenaline rush when you exit a corner and see another cyclist right in front of you? On the last small climb on that 40km ride I swear I rode up that climb two gears higher than I normally do, and even though I was completely out of breath I just kept going for some reason. Pretty impressive how the body sometimes just gets a rush of energy at the end of a ride. Maybe I went Super Saiyan and imma fired mah laser?

I'm thinking of replacing the hoods, bar tape and the rear tires. I'm not sure about the shifters, I'll go and check them out. To me, it looks like a bike that hasn't been ridden for a while.

Hey guys, I'm planning on haggling this down to $300 bucks, since I'm on the lookout for a road bike around the $300 mark. Any ideas/suggestions?

"could benefit from a tune up to improve the S.I.S. shifting" could also mean the drivetrain is worn. If it's just cable stretch knocking the indexing out it's an easy fix but if the indexing is right and the shifting still sloppy it could get expensive if you want to make it like new again.

I'm definitely like that, the pain is still there but you ignore to win. The fastest time I've been up the hill near me I use to train was when I started it with someone else half way up and completely beasted myself to get to the top before them :D

I'd second what daft biker has said. It's a 5 minute job to adjust the gear indexing so you'd expect the seller to fix that rather than include it in the description. Look for work teeth on the cassette and chain rings and if the chain is stretched by seeing if you can pull it off the big ring.

I've signed up to join a local mountain bike club to give me more opportunities to get out on rides when I've got the free time but my usual riding buddies don't. You have to do a "Newbie Ride" to get signed off to join which is on 22nd April so I've got a bit of time to train for it, it sounds like they ride pretty quick and over greater distances than I usually do :scared:

Sounds good - something to aim towards and you have a bit of time to get back in the groove.

How long is the ride?

That's what I'm hoping. It'll be about 30km with 800m climbing as opposed to 20km with 500m climbing which is what I usually do riding off road, by my rough calculations the pace should be in the region of 12km/h which is what I do now so at I should be able to keep up...until the 20km mark at least!

That's a really good point, actually. A chain isn't too much of a hassle, but I'll try to bring the price down if that happens. My biggest concern are the chainrings. I just dont want to be stuck with a bike with worn chainrings, as I will probably need to purchase a whole new cassette. I'll also try to check for the bottom bracket too, my old Giant ATX 860 (Pics below, sold for $400) had a bad bottom bracket, thus making me buy a new one. IMO, 300 is even too much for the bike, my ideal price would be around 275, $250 being a steal.

1999 Giant ATX
Deore LX (Rear derailleur, shifters)/ Shimano STX RC (Front derailleur, brakes beake levers, worked AMAZING)
Weight: 22 Pounds
Tires: WTB Velociraptors
Fork: Manitou Black Super Air 80mm
Custom CF top cap and FSA stem.

Boiltheocean is Derby way I think but Cannonk Chase is probably your nearest trail centre and is meant to be very good although I've not been. Check out the links below for ideas

ARRGGGHH!!!!

A Cannondale lefty?

Very well I've heard.

Same here although I gave up head shock forks a long time ago....might work well in California where they are made but don't seem to mix well with Scottish mud and don't feel anywhere near as smooth as normal suss forks for the same sort of money.

That and the first set I had got taken back after a couple of weeks as they developed a knock when they went from compression to rebound. The shop also identified what looked like a hairline crack at the bottom of the square bit of steerer so I had to get new lowers and never trusted them again (replaced them with White Brothers).

At least they fixed the fork though....they didn't want to know when I cracked the downtube on the frame a few years later:grumpy:

That was an old Super V but I also had a hardtail for a wee while a few years back.....very light, very fast, super stiff back end that I could wheelie and hop about on all day (:sly:)......still didn't like the forks though:)

Head shocks almost made sense in the rim brake days as you got way better braking performance (I was using Magura racelines on them) but these days with through axles and disk brakes addressing many of the problems with early suspension forks I reckon the lefty is just trying to make a patent they already had fit a problem so they can keep making money off it.

Beautiful day. 19,5 degrees celcius, in March.

Covered 2 hours of riding, which is about 50km or just over 50km. I came back with a sunburn... in March. This is totally awesome.

Aye, it's fair braw here today too.

I did 3 or 4 laps of the grassy bit out the front with the dog chasing me on SWMBO's bike as it's not been ridden for a while.....still running sweet and only had to pump the tyres up. Also took the bairn to school on the tag-a-long but had the gas man coming so couldn't go too far today.

Dog is getting better at not trying to bite my trouser leg and pull me off the bike now. Might be able to take him down the old railway with the bike soon:)

Is that Lefty yours? You are one lucky owner! My brother's friend has lefty and a Scott Scale 29 Expert.... its jaw dropping.
