The biking thread

I would, if I hadn't just bought a new bike, had the funds and it wasn't limited edition, definitely buy that Turbo. I think it's the way forward in biking.

I'm sure some of you have seen this, but if not check it out. This is Alejandro Paz going down a mountain is spectacular style!

Yup, watched that already...efin quick!

Your crazy chinese video sites take aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages to load ;)

That Spesh does look pretty cool for an electric bike, it being too fast for US and UK is bolx though as you can go quicker than that on the flat on a mountain bike.

Aye, nae bother, even a smoker on a lardy full susser can go quicker:). But to use a motor to go faster on UK roads I believe means a registration plate, insurance and more than likely road tax and an MOT too.....I guess you could ride it legally it you could do all that but then I don't suppose it would then be legal to ride, for example, much of the national cycle network, abondoned railway lines and towpaths as it would be classed as a motorbike.

Get two and just register one.....problem solved:crazy:

Anyone have any experience with Lemond road bikes? I have been offered a Lemond Etape 6061 with carbon forks for what I think is a pretty good price at a £150. Only looked at it briefly, haven't had a test ride yet but looks like it's in good shape but could do with some new tyres as the Continental variation it currently has are quite worn.

^ Dunno much about them but that sounds like not many pounds for a carbon fork bike so may be a winner.

In my biking news I went to Lee and Cragg Quarry mountain bike trail centre yesterday and all did not go to plan. We were a bit pushed for time so only made it part way to Cragg Quarry before turning back to go home but still made time for a bit of a play...or so I'm told.

We got to these set off drop offs...

...and I did the little one on the right fine and kind of did the middle one fine but instead of turning right into the berm I went straight over it rodeo style and did this to my front inner tube...

...and this to my brand new lid!

I don't remember any of it but I think it was a bit like this but with less skill and less luck.

Cue a long walk back to the car and my mates driving me home then 6 hours in hospital with my wife to get an x-ray and CT scan. I've got concussion so really don't remember much of yesterday at all let alone the crash but I'm still in one piece although I've cut and grazed my right arm and leg and bashed my right shoulder and ribs quite bad :( (1st April Awesome Face Smiley not intended!) Fortunately my bike seems fine and I don't think my nearly new wheels are buckled so that's a relief, also Giro do a crash replacement scheme so a new lid will be £35 instead of £56.

Moral of the story, don't let your ambition overtake your skill and always wear a helmet!

Just writing this post was hard work so I'm off to bed and will be taking a couple of days off work to recover at home.

Heck Neal, sounds nasty :scared:. Glad you are generally in one piece, but that helmet looks like like a ruddy good investment as it took a heck of a beating!

Glad the bike sounds like it hasn't taken too much damage and your rims might be undamaged to.

When you came too, where your feet still clamped in...?

You cracked that helmet up good, Neal! Glad to hear your alright!

Take that visor off and you would've seen that nasty rock that made you fall off ;)

Glad you ok with only the pride damaged... :-P

The lid was definitely a good investment, I've read stuff that they're only tested for 8mph impacts therefore are pointless in a faster crash but I was going way faster than that and it saved me big time so my faith in them is restored.

The front wheel has got a buckle in it, not huge so should be fixable and the place where I bought them offer a free truing service for life which will hopefully just cost me postage one way. If they can't true it I think they offer a free rebuild service and discount on new parts. The rim on it's own is only £25 so it should all be fairly wallet friendly.

Helmets 1, style 0. Glad you're alright Neal, shame about the lid.

Indeed, if you hadn't got one already would this have convinced you? ;)

Thanks mate 👍

lol, it's adjustable and I had moved it up the day before from the "looks cool" position to the "I can see where I'm going" position so I've only got lack of skill to blame...or maybe the clown wheels on my mates Cube 29er distracted me :sly:

I am pretty sore today but give it a little while and it'll just be my pride that still stings!

Record Breakers, Record Breakers...da, da, da da.

*to the theme of the popular 90's TV show*

I left the house at 7:45 this morning and just started gunning it from the off. I made it to work, 14km, door to door in 32 minutes and a few seconds. My personal best in a morning so far.

Average speed 28kph
Top speed 50.1kph
Total distance 14.79km (includes walking the bike to the lifts)
Ride time 32:07 (clocked at the office door)

I think I'm going to pass out for a few hours now after my hash browns and a Gatorade.

Legs. On. Fire.

When you came too, where your feet still clamped in...?

After speaking to my mates about the crash I definitely wasn't still clipped in after the crash. I'm unclipping automatically now so it's getting easier and I may even start increasing the spring tension on the pedals.

Most definitely.

I've only worn mine commuting but I'll be wearing it everywhere from now on.

See, my pain was worth it :dopey:

Also congrats on the awesome pace 👍

Unlucky Neal, it sucks when you get a little too far over the front wheel. Get well soon!

Indeed and thanks, could have been worse so I got off fairly lightly. May invest in some knee pads though, I'm thinking 661 Rage or Fox Launch Pro...any thoughts?

Congrats on the smashed lid....I think:idea::dunce:

Hope you're not sore for long. Back out next weekend?:)

In all my years of falling off motorbikes I never did that to a lid :D Shame it's been sent away to get the cheaper replacement! It's getting better but I think there's zero chance of riding this weekend as I need to go up in the loft to get my old wheels down and there's no way my shoulder is up to hauling me up there yet. I'll rope my brother into helping me on Monday though so I can send the news wheels back to Superstar Components to be fixed.

I didn't watch this video for a moment assuming he was on a mountain bike, but clearly he is! Drafting vans on a motorway upto 60 mph!

Do you have the name of the guy or the video because I can't view that one but it might be on a Chinese site?

It's a Polish police video so the best I can give is the title!

"Šílenec na kole na dálnici D1 [ Police chase bicycle ] :)))"

That would mean larger gearing than you are likely to find on a MTB though. Seems unlikely to me.
The video clearly shows it :odd:

Now whether he was drafting downhill or he'd modified the bike for just this thing I don't know, but it's quite clear he's doing it in the video.

I've just about topped out at a little under 50mph down a mountain road following a bus, and that was on a road bike in the drops, that's my record so far. How anyone could manage it on a mountain bike, well, they'd the need the cadence of a 2 stroke engine!
